probably no help to you, but I got an eval version of server 08 put it on a box and use WDS. Good thing is you can rearm server 08 a few times and extend the evaluation period. My NM said Ramesys do good deals on licensing for server 08, he said around £60 if I remember correctly. Not bad! Everyone should have a home server imo. I have IIS for web files, FTP, remote access, printer sharing, raided network drives, imaging, its great. Not a cheap option though of course. As others have said I use Acronis, but the enterprise edition. I don't use it for imaging although it does a good job at that. I use it primarily for remote backups which it does really well in a server/client environment. Completely silent aswell. Backs up my home folders on my gaming machine, my downstairs media PC etc. Well worth it. They were giving away this software at BETT, perhaps someone has a spare?

You may also want to check that you have exceptions in the firewall to allow ICMP requests.

The fact they told you about the incident is a miracle in itself. From my experience staff in care homes often don't report mistakes like that. Once, in a BUPA care home no less, a foreign worker forgot to replace my nans oxygen supply after changing the cylinder. She was without this supply of oxygen for 24hrs before it was noticed. As someone who had serious emphezyma, we were utterly shocked. In a case like that we had no choice but to complain. I personally would say report anything. Care homes get away with a lot and personally if someones career gets ruined due to their gross negligence its their own fault. If there was a genuine mistake which wasn't serious / life threatening then fair enough, further training and guidance should be given. Giving someone the wrong meds is not a minor error and they should be pulled up on it.

Got it? I booked a week off work for the release date, my friend came up from tonbridge, set our gear up head to head style. Wrote our /played times down, and played solidly for the entire week. So yes! I got to 79 by the end of the week and stopped playing when i went back to work. I haven't played since, i'm around 6 bars off 80. What a waste! I think i clocked up around 70 hours played time that week. Disgraceful. Got my death knight to 54 or something, I like the class but haven't put any real time into it. I guess Im really an ex-wow player now, probably for the best. But no doubt something will drag me back. Thing is I hate my server (darkspear pve), its full of real idiots, but i hear thats the same on a lot of other servers.

But when it comes to things like youtube Im sure a bit of dutch won't stop them EDIT: It seems that after a bit of browsing through youtube through the google translate method, it reverts back to english because they've added that 'country filter' which automatically selects your country.

Tomorrow morning I'm planning on updating our ISA server to ban a list of proxy sites I've compiled. Problem is obviously one of these is Google Translate. From what I understand the Foreign Languages dept use this feature and I'm going to have to give them a relatively similar alternative. I've done a quick google search but was wondering if any of you knew of a particularly good one. Obviously it states in our policies that proxy sites are banned and not to be used under any circumstances, therefore at least we are covered from that angle but Id still like to present a respectable alternative. Any suggestions?

Hey all, For some reason Im having trouble getting this command to work. Im running XP SP3 with support tools installed. When running the command, I get a: "The network path was not found" "The command failed to complete successfully" Ive run this from the usual command prompt and also from the support tools directory. Anyone have any idea? Ive checked the syntax and im sure its correct. We have a split site here and its damn annoying having to drive 1.5 miles away just to change a computer name! Would really like to get this working. Cheers.

Yeh I was lucky and stumbled accross this. Gave me and my colleague a demo. Was absolutely incredible. It really did feel like true 3D, very crisp images. The only price I got was for the glasses which I think he said costs £600 to manufacture. So they're not too commercial at the moment. Apparently they're trying to get the costs down to sell them on for £30 a piece. Awesome kit though. Nothing like the typical red and green method I was used too!

Was listening to Adam and Joe's radio show and they were talking about the ad for this program. I couldn't deal with more than 30seconds. made me cringe more than 'the office'.

Hey guys, Just wanted to say thanks for the warm greetings at the Edugeek stand. I almost cried when I heard the lanyards had run out! Managed to pick one up off another stand. We use one eee (cant remember exactly what model of the top of my head) for our department which we installed XP lite on. Mainly used for testing wireless points, vga and logons. Its connected to the domain, pulls group policy fine and has office xp installed which also works fine. All the networking seems to run smoothly, works well with wireless too. Not had any intermittent wireless problems as far as im aware. Only issue really is battery life. So long as the apps aren't too memory intensive it runs relatively fast. Other apps installed on it, off the top of my head are various admin stuff like port scanners and wireshark. We have mindgenius installed on it and a few other standard apps we use on our network. Access to network drives and everything else is pretty much what you'd expect on a normal laptop. If you're going to dish them out to students Id be cautious. Someone here mentioned a teacher pushing the power button straight through the case so physical damage may be an issue Other than office, is there any other specific software you would plan to deploy on the netbooks?

I personally would stay clear of these for students. We have five eee originals which we give to cover staff and temporary staff who need to be able to access ePortal for registers etc... They're very good for that purpose but I wouldn't know about students.

I honestly wouldn't worry. With the experience you have you should be farmiliar enough to learn rapidly. I started my first EVER IT related job in June last year, with only an A+ qualification under my arm and a twinkle in my eye. Starting out was difficult. A school with 800 PCs and a few hundred laptops, not to mention whiteboards, projectors was a bit daunting at first. I had to learn pretty much everything, from ghosting to AD and server administration. Computers have always been a hobby of mine but not in practice in a working environment. After a couple of months of intense learning and absorbing what others were doing around me I was well on my way, and now I feel very confident in my job. From my limited knowledge the guys working in IT within schools are always patient and friendly. You should be fine!

Just to boost your confidence even more, what you have said in your post is basically my story aswell. Couldn't deal with going to Uni, did a bit of retail management before deciding to go into IT after enjoying fiddling around with software/hardware at home. Went and passed my A+ and started on MCP. Managed to get an interview at my local school and with a bit of smooth talking managed to get the technician job. Experience doesn't seem to be the most important thing. If you can show you are enthusiastic and really willing to learn and grow with the school then they'll be more likely to hire you than someone who has been in the job too long and has that far away vacant stare that we all have now! A+ is a really good way to start. I bit the bullet really hard and did a couple of courses in london at the LSCE. Cost me a bomb and to be honest A+ can be learnt from a book with ease. Also, get an evaluation copy of server 2008, get vmware, and experiment with setting up and maintaining a network with a couple of clients. This will give you a little glimpse into what you'll be expected to know. Good luck!

Hi guys, was hoping you could give me some advice on this issue. I recently had a teacher come in with a laptop that needed her work taken off, backed up, the laptop reghosted and then the work put back on. Usual story. Unfortunately she must have saved all this work (including student coursework) in an obscure directory that we dont usually look in. She was asked to put all her work into one folder for us to back up (which she didnt do) Now the work is gone and the laptop has since been ghosted. Is it even possible using any data recovery on the laptop considering its been freshly ghosted. Would XP effectively overwrite any chance of getting the work back? Any advice would be appreciated! chris

I had to make sure that all internet explorer windows were closed before deploying. If any ie processes were running it would fail. Make sure you have put quotation marks around all the path names and perhaps try using this switch: --skipProcessCheck=1 which may help. cb

Sorry to bring this thread up again but I spent about three weeks trying to get a suitable system in place for deployment/uninstalling CS3 as we have quite a few media/photography rooms. Absolute nightmare. Unless you pay the thousands of pounds worth of support subscriptions you will get nowhere with adobe support. For anyone who maybe interested I suggest you use the standard CS3 deployment strategy as documented here: http://www.adobe.com/support/deployment/cs3_deployment.pdf and combine in with a startup script in a GPO like this: reg query HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Dreamweaver\9.0\Installation if %errorlevel%==1 (goto DeployDreamweaverCS3) else (goto End) :DeployDreamweaverCS3 start /wait \\[sERVER]\[sHARE]\AdobeCS3_WIN\Setup.exe --mode=Silent --deploymentFile="\\[sERVER]\[sHARE]\AdobeCS3_WIN\deployment\dreamweaverInstall.xml" :End This basically queries the registry for an existing CS3 installation, if it doesn't find the entry it will then execute the script and install CS3. You can of course change the query and which software it deploys to suit your needs and install the entire CS3 suite etc... (Full thread on this: Adobe CS3 applications With a bit of tweaking you could also do this for uninstalling CS3 as the deployment directory contains the Uninstall.xml. It took me a long time to get this working as im a newb to this sort of thing so hope that helps someone. Unfortunately Ive not found a way to deploy Ultra CS3 and OnLocation CS3 as adobe quite stupidly didn't create any deployment resources for them. Anyone had any luck with those two apps deploying over gpo?

We have two seperate campus's so we need a pretty organised AD. Every room has its own OU, so within those OUs, the station name would be, for example: "A100-01" and "B100-01" A= Lower Campus B= Upper Campus 100= Room Number 01 = incremental Laptops are usually just the make and model with an increment. ie. "ERGO-MXL-05"
