Did a Netware 6.5/Zenworks 6.5 /Groupwise 7 (7 Servers) migration to RM CC3 during the 2 week easter break along with a member of the infrastructure installs team from the LEA ICT department. As SLT decided that we couldn't have 'any' downtime this was planned as a parallel migration. In the 2 weeks prior to the easter break, I did lots of file tidying and consolidation to reduce data transfer amounts. Using the Novell ICE wizard and the edirectory odbc driver, I created lists of all current user account and group details. Email was to be a 'clean slate' so student and staff emails didn't need to migrated. Senior leadership and certain other important staff mails were converted using outlook into pst fles. First day of the easter break I emptied and reorganised the server racks with the old servers being stacked beside the racks so they could still be in use. The first 2 CC3 servers and exchange server were then installed into the racks and commissioning by the LEA started. Whilst that was taking place I generated new csv import files containing new id/password lists and I created the new documentation booklets for all staff and students which would contain instructions on how to access the new system and how - on the machines connected to the old system - to get access to their migrated data. Once the servers were up and running, the new accounts were created and the data transfer started. Whist that was taking place our 4 ICT labs were rebuilt onto the CC3 system and the process of creating software install packages started. By the end of the two week easter break, the new system was up and running alongside the old and 104 workstations had been built with all data transferred. First day back, booklets were issued out to all staff and students and the process of fielding the expected 'help' calls started. Over the next half-term another 96 Machines were converted upto the recommended maximum for 2 servers of 200 workstations and further packages were created and deployed. In the half-term the next 2 CC3 servers arrived and were integrated into the new network. The rest of the workstations on the netware network were then able to be converted to CC3 along with making a start on migrating our staff laptops. The laptops would take longer to convert as they first had to be handed over for conversion. For this I set up a simple booking sheet in the staff room with 4 slots per day so that staff could decide which on which day they would be without their laptop. 4 was the maximum laptops we could convert per day due to physical office space limits and having to backup data before conversion. By the week before the summer break all the workstations had been converted and the majority of the software had been re-installed. All that was left was the remaining staff laptops and an expected delivery of a batch of new laptops for the science department. It was at this point that we decided to shutdown the old Novell system for the final time after first taking a final complete backup - just in case. Our primary edirectory/zenworks server was then shipped off to the LEA ICT department for re-building as our 5th CC3 server. This being returned and integrated in the first week of the summer break.

Used to name our servers after mythological creatures, ie. Hydra, Gryfin, Phoenix, our switchgear after trek characters (Picard and Kirk were core and Uhura was naturally our comms router). The rooms were just 'Room #-PC #'. Now were std RM so it's Sitecode-Device-Room-#.

Moving RMStaff is a little more involved than that as it also impacts on other RM services such as easylink. No worries, oh btw, the floppy drive can also be removed by unscrewing the L5 screw to the imediate left of the hard disk cover and the small black screw inside the memory bay to the left of the ribbon cable. The mini-pci wifi card (if installed) and other memory bay can all be accessed once the keyboard has been removed. These instructions are also valid for the travelmate 530 as it shares the same components and has an almost identical chassis.

On the underside of the laptop (with the floppy drive oriented towards you), remove the memory bay cover. In the top right corner of the memory bay is a small silver screw maked CD7, remove this. From inside the memory bay, apply gentle pressure to the rear of the cd drive and it should slide free of the chassis.

A shot in the dark but it may be possible for you to be able to reset the password from within windows by using the 'esettings' section of the acer emanager program if you have it installed. I believe that this section has replaced the bios options in the 'notebook manager' software that was bundled with older generations of acer. I can't say for sure as we remove the acer utils on our acers so people don't get the urge to fiddle :-)

As far as I know with Exchange 2003, pop3 and imap are installed but not enabled by default. I believe that it is just a case of enabling the pop3 or imap services in the services.msc Once that is done you should be able to conect using the dns name of your server and your account name/password. Of course you will also have to ensure that port 110(pop3) or port 143(imap) respectively are allowed through any firewalls.

Does this help? you should be able to set the blackberry internet service to pick up mail from pop3 or imap and it will check for new mail at 15min intervals. If you want to synchronise the calendar etc. then i'm afraid you'll have to use the blackberry enterprise server. Incidentally, blackberry do a free 'starter' version including 1 free user CAL with a 30 user limit. This was ideal for us as we only had 7 blackberries so we only had to purchase a further 6 CALs.

Use Regedit to modify the contents of the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Novell\Login\History\Contexts subkey The Size value changes the amount of entries displayed whereas each numbered value will be a context previously used. Delete the all the numbered entries leaving only 1 and 2 changing thier data to that of the contexts you wish to display and change the size value to 2.

You could use QControl from AND Technologies which is a cut down version of the managment util from their PCounter product. The only restriction on the free version is that you can't save custom layout views or start up in custom view mode.

You will need to allocate the appropriate filesystem rights to the users new home directory for the renamed userid. Ownership shouldn't cause a problem with accessing the files, however as the files are not owned by the user, they will not count towards any disk quotas you have allocated. To change the ownership either alter each file and folder properties in C1 or drop to a dos prompt with a mapped drive to the users new home directory and run the following FLAG *.* /NAME= /S this will recurse through all files and folders setting the ownership to

Our current default limits are as follows: Years 7 - 9 : 150Mb Years 10 & 11 : 300Mb Year 12 & 13 : 500Mb Teaching Staff : 1Gb Non-Teaching Staff : 100Mb (as the majority rarely touch a computer and our admin staff have their own admin server/domain) Of course there are a few exceptions such for those staff and students that have a need to handle large amounts of media such as art, technology (gfx design) and a-level music but those are evaluated as required. Oh and of course the system admins have no limits We used to limit our lower years to 50Mb but we started using Alite Learn2Learn which requires that students save an 35Mb excel spreadsheet to their areas so we had to increase it pretty sharpish.

Well thats it...after just under 13 years of constant uptime (baring service packs and upgrades), i've just taken a final backup and its time to shut down our Netware servers for the last time.

Ok, let me see if I can explain myself more clearly. We configured a wireless print server (DP-313) with our wireless access settings so that it could wirelessly connect to our LAN (we set a static IP for the print server). LPT1 on the print server was then configured to be an LPR print queue. On the Domain Controler, we setup a new standard TCP/IP printer port and pointed it to the address of the print server and entered the LPR port settings where required. This printer was then shared to the client laptops.

This is certainly possible as we used to do exactly the same thing here. We used a D-Link DP-313 print server (only 802.11b i'm afraid but at the time, it was the only speed available). Configure the print server as an LPR target and then create a local TCP/IP printer on your server pointing to the LPR address. Share the printer and allocate to your clients.

View the properties of any OU that contains users and choose 'launcher configuration' from the zenworks tab. There are two settings that you may find useful: Display Icon on Desktop and Display System Tray Icon these can be found in the 'explorer' tab when you click the add button (or select the property if already listed and click edit)
