The thing is will any of us have any machines capable of running it? From M$ Website: Windows Vista Ready PC Requirements Windows Vista Ready PCs need to pass the current certification requirements for Designed for Windows XP logo. In addition, these PCs would need the following combination of essential PC hardware for good overall Windows Vista performance: • CPU — PC systems should have a modern CPU. • RAM — PC systems should have 512MB of memory or more. • GPU — PC systems should have a graphics processor that will support Windows Vista Display Driver Model. Windows Vista offers significant improvements to the graphics user experience. To take advantage of these advances in the graphics user experience, graphics processor will need to support the Windows Vista Display Driver Model. Graphics processors capable of supporting Windows Vista Display Driver Model: • Are designed to ensure that graphics user experience scales up with hardware capabilities. • Offer improved graphic stability and performance. • May be able to support additional desktop productivity features.

@ Mark: Thanks for that. I did forget to say before, you can run the application silent too. Schedule the app to run at whatever time you want using the Windows Task Schedule tool and when you have selected the app simply add /S after the exe for example the application path would read: C:\Program Files\Nasty File Search (NFS 2005)\FS2005.EXE /S Also this app has been tested fully on the Following: Windows XP SP1 & SP2 (With User who has Admin Rights) Windows 2000 Server SP4 (Standard, Advanced & Datacenter) Windows 2003 Server with and without SP1

Version 2.0 Last edited: 18/08/2007 History: 1.1 – First release 1.2 – Updated file extension engine 1.3 – Updated log file formating 1.4 – Updated email functions to allow alternative mailing methods 1.5 – Updated scanning engine to allow infinite level deep scanning 1.6 – Corrected some typos and interface layout issues 1.7 - Fixed the Error Code 53 problem and steamlined some processes. 2.0 - New user interface, ability to backup file prior to deletion, faster scanning process. UPDATE: --> New download site is here <-- UPDATE: 1. What is ANFS? ANFS is an intelligent search and destroy tool with an easy-to-use interface. It has many powerful features to help you find and remove files based on criteria you supply. 2. Prerequisites You will need Internet Explorer 5 or later installed as some of the components used are shipped as standard with this.. 3. Remove ANFS Installation Before installing the latest version of ANFS please ensure you fully remove the previous version using Add/Remove programs. One day I might get around to doing this bit automatically. 4. Installation Simply download the ANFS.exe file from the website and install. You can find it --> HERE <-- 5. Configuration Once installed goto Start -> Programs -> Admins Nasty File Search -> Admins Nasty File Search, this will launch the app. The first time you run it most of the options WILL BE unavailable, this has been done to enusre you setup the app correctly first, the only option that will be available to you is "Applications Settings" click on this. You will need to update your search folder (Where you want to search for those nasty files, please note you can not search network shares (this is smoething I am working on) however to get around this you can map a share a a local drive and it works fine) You can, if you wish cahnge the directory that the logfiles reside in but it is recommended that you leave this as is. On average the logfile is not bigger than 400k and this was a result set of over 500,000 files found so over 7 days you would be looking at around 2Mb, not much really. You can specify if any files found are deleted or not by ticking the Delete Files checkbox. It is recommended that you DO NOT tick this box, I would advise that you run a search first and then view the log, once you are happy that what has been found WILL NOT impact on the system i.e sytem files have been found, the go back set the Delete Files option and re-run the search this will then delete all files found. PLEASE NOTE: This is a serious option to set as IT WILL DELETE ALL FILES FOUND, make sure you know what you are doing and you have taken all precautions. Don't come crying to me if you set the Search path to c:\ and youthen set Delete Files to yes, I think you can guess what happens next...... Last but not least the option to email logs to an administrator, sel explanitory really. Once you have made the changes you need click on the save setting button, you will now be prompted that ANFS needs to restart, this is only required once, simply click ok and then restart the application at which point all the other options are now available Now if you set the email log to administrator to yes inthe steps above you will need to now click on the Email Settings button, the window explains itself and should be straight forward as is the File Extensions option. The other two options are view log files and About ANFS. View Log Files will display all log files found is the folder specified in Application Settings. To view a log file simply double click on it in the list, if you want to delete a single log file place a tick in the box next to it and click on Purge Log Files, if you want to delete them all click select all and then purge log files. About ANFS is merely the freeware licence and a link back to the website to check for updates. Well I hope you all enjoy it and find some use out of it I know I have, if you have any comments please post them here good or bad feedback is always welcomed. 6. Known Issues / Problems There are no known issues / problems 7. Thanks To the edugeek crew for providing a superb resource. To all those who have downloaded and used ANFS (1000 downloads and counting ;-))

@Mark: Overheads well, you would need a dedicated server for sharepoint so there is that, do you then go for the free sharepoint services for 2003 or go full blown Office 2003 Portal server, we did the later as it came as part of our M$ Select agreement but it depends what you want to do. The main overhead is knowledge, I have been using sharepoint for over 3 years now but if you are coming into it new it can be a steep learning curve. My advice would be to get it installed, don't tell anyone about it, get used to it and once you are happy tell people what you can do, that way you won't get any nasty suprises, been there done that !!!

We have sharepoint server fully rolled out at our place. Depending on which group your are in i.e. Student, Teacher, SMT, HOD,etc... the intranet screens are rendered based on group access. We have class server 4 intergrated into it providing all areas of the school with "One Click" access to information.

We now have over 200 members!!!

Congrats All, Heres to the next 200..... -
@ Dos_Box: That would be fine mate.

@ninjabeaver: Thanks for the typo heads up have fixed that ;-) I have updated some screen shots and is well on course for release tomorrow.

Hi all, I have set the release date as this friday 12th August 2005. I did want it out on Monday but have added support for over 50 extensions giving great scope and have also streamlined the email facility too. Last set of tests show the whole process of scanning 500,000 files and generating the log and emailing it to an admin take less that 70 seconds. In the meantime I have setup a website --> Here <-- if you want to take a look. I will submit a download request on Friday so the app can be added.

I am in the final stages of gettinig the first release finished, just some tweeks but below is a screen shot for you all. @Ric_: Looking at the file structure on the DVD it's unlike any previous version of Windows. I think we are gonna have to re-write the book on unattended / remote installation of Vista ;-)
-
Have got it ;-) Have not yet been able to install it under virtual PC as the virtual drives are not recognised so I will need to get a machine from somewhere to install it on. Once I got it up and running i'll get a couple of screen shots up. BEWARE: for those of you that have MSDN you can download it now from the MSDN website but it is over 2.5Gb in size. So far what I have seen from the installer is that is windows looks the way the installer does (WOW) some of us are gonna have a hard time when it comes to roll out, it's a completely different UI and we all know how people like change - NOT !

Hi All, I have been using the script put together by Ric_ above and it's very good, but I need more. I have put together a small executable (around 140k in size) that will do the following: 1) Scan all files and folders looking for specififed extensions 2) User can control how deep to scan (how many levels deep) 3) User can control if a recursive scan is performed 4) User can specify what extensions to scan for 5) User can specify if files are to be delete or just reported 6) User can specify if the folder is to be deleted or just reported 7) User can schedule the application to run, silently if required 8) User can have the files found report emailed automatically to an email of thier choice There are many other features included in this application, the beauty of it is that you only need to set the settings once as they are stored, then its just a case of schedule the app to run. The email report can either be a breif look what I found report or a full in depth one. I have decided not to use the FSO object like Ric_ but use the Windows API and multi thread the application, currently in testing I have been able to scan 500,000 files and folders in little over 60 seconds with only a 3% CPU overhead (Tested on dual xeon 4Ghz Processors with 2Gb Ram) I am doing some final testing and will release it, If you would like a copy PM me, and if we get enough response we can start doing some enhancements.

@Mark_Wood: Welcome to the Dell NAS Club ;-) I have just done what you are about to do, I needed to copy all user files and folders from our old PDC to the NAS server while still retaining the following: File Permissions Folder Permissions Shares & Share Permssions I have the script back at the office and will post a copy of it up on Monday for you.
-
We should be getting ours on or around Aug 4th Will then install and provide some screen shots for all to see.
-
@Ric_: If you run the script over say 70,000 files and folders as we have it will scan the lot in about 70 secs. Which in all fairness is not bad, however there is a small issue where if you use the delete flag if you hit a read only file the script falls over. I am working on adding some updates to the script and will post an update in due course.

I agree with NetMan, the VSS (Volume Shadow Service) is a god send. Teachers and some students tend to overright files accidentally and often ask for a restore to be done, this could take up to an hour or more in some cases. VSS will take a copy files and create backups of them at predefined intervals of a set period of time. If an overight occurs you can simply suggest that the user find the file in question, right clicks and selects properties, if VSS for shared folders has been setup correctly you will se a previous versions tab. All they have to do at this point is select the version prior to the overight and hey presto recovered in less than five minutes. Of course you don't need storage server 2003 for this as any 2003 server will do it however it is already applied to any share you make so provided all users files are stored centrally, well I think you get the picture.... For more info see this --> http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/docs/ShadowCopiesSharedFolders.swf

We are replacing both of our DC's which currently have win2k on them with 2 new servers running win2k3. As far as i understand if they are join an exsiting domain then there should not be a problem and should be a smooth transition. If you are adding your win2k3 server purely as a member server then there should be no knock on effects to the win2k domain.

@tarquel : We were in the process of decommisioning two server that were 7 years old and on thier last legs. I approached the education deartment at Dell and told them I have a budget of £5k and wanted 2 beefy servers as the were going to be domaincontrollers and "possibly a NAS server" budget permitting. Anyhow 2 days later I gets a quote for the following: 2 x Poweredge 1850's, Dual 4Ghz Xeon Processors, 2 GB Mem, 73GB 15k SCSI, Dual 1GB NICs, Dual PSU, Remote Management Card 1 x PV745 3TB NAS with Windows Storage Server and Hardware Raid All with 4 hour on site response for the grand price of £4300 +VAT Naturally we said yes to it ;-)

Hi All, It needed a little tidyup but find attached the complete HOW TO for the above including all reference files etc. After a little extra tweeking you can get some really good automation out of this, currently we have XP Pro SP2 & Office 2003 SP1 + another 9 applications all being installed silently and unattended over the network. If you have any comments please let me know I would be glad to help.
-
We are about to start usiong WSS 2003 as I have just taken delivery of a 3TB NAS from Dell The deal they gave us pretty much undercut all others. Will let you know in the next day or 3 how it goes.

The reason that M$ downgraded the detection of Claria/Gator is that M$ have put in a bid to buy them. See here --> http://news.com.com/Microsoft+said+to+be+in+talks+to+buy+Claria/2100-1030_3-5769583.html NOTE: I removed M$ Antispyware from 400+ machines 2 weeks ago as it is proving to be more of a hinderance than a help

@Tarquel: I use RunOnceEx to do the application installs, currently sitting at 15 and all silent. No CD is used all run over the network, most installs are setoff after 4:00pm so little or no other network traffic is around. The method is boot from floppy (takes around 2 mins) and that it the UA runs, initially only the OS files are copied over but then at the T-12 stage the Applications files are copied over and the RunOnceEx reg entries are made.
