maybe. Easiest way to check would be to make the windows partition larger using the slider when configuring the fully automation in net restores preferences. Make it bigger than your image is by about 10gb and try it. If it is your image size being bigger than the partition then doing this would make it work. I have seen before that if you use 50% in boot camp and choose 50% in net restore that the re-imaging fails as the bootcamps measurement is bigger. Could be your issue too.

OK. Depending on what version of Net-Restore you are using depends on how easy it is to automatically deploy the both partitions. I recommend 3.4.6 version since it has the tick box for auto deployment of both partitions. I tried to do this myself with the scripts and only got as far as creating the boot camp partitioning using the boot camp script. When using 3.4.6, the procedure goes something like this... You create your images of both the OS X and XP partitions. You can save them off onto an external HDD or just save them directly into the share where your images will be deployed from. This is your choice. You then create your Net-Install sets. Again you can save it onto an external or save it straight into your netbootsp0 share ready for booting off. If you save them to an external drive you will need to copy them into these locations afterwards. Once the Net-Install set has been created you will be asked if you wish to configure the NetRestore options. Click yes. Then go to NetRestore > Configurations in the menu bar. This will allow you to create some configurations to use to install your images. Create one for both the OS X and XP images. Config name = name of config to choose when netrestore launches on netboot Protocol = What you are going to use to deploy. If coming from a server most likely AFP sharepoint = name of share that you are using to store image .dmgs (mine is called Images) username = username used to connect to the share password = password used to connect to the share hostname/ip = hostname/ip address of server where the images are stored Relative Path to image from sharepoint = i usually type in the name of the image being used. Along the bottom of the window you should see the afp share path being built. This is the location it is going to use. Save this and then do the same for XP. ( you can just change the name of the config and the dmg being used if they are all in the same location and then just click save again) Now once these are created close the window and then go to NetRestore > preferences Heres the magic... Use the drop down menu and choose the OS X config that you just created. Use First drive available. Erase target disk. Verify restored disk. If you wish to start into OS X after rebuild tick the set as target disk. If you want XP leave this unticked. Enable full automation. Tick the Partition the target volume and choose a size. In the Windows Configuration drop-down menu, choose the windows config that we created earlier. Click save. This should be it now. Configure your Netboot server to have the netinstall set that you created to be the only one enabled and choose it to be the default. This allows you to just hold down N when rebooting to start the process. The rest should be automated. Test on a different machine to the one you built your images on. If it fails for any reason, you don't want to rebuild again since it will erase the target disk. Important note: You cannot restore to a smaller drive in XP than you created the image on. You can use larger partitions but not smaller. I don't think OS X is fussy about this so it is maybe better to use a slightly larger partition when setting the partition size in the net-restore preferences for Windows. I hope that this helps

you can still download net restore if you want to use it. It's just that it won't be being updated anymore. As for deploy studio. I looked at it briefly when it was in beta but never used it for deployment. IIRC, you needed to have a server side app as well. I may loo into it again at some point but the net-restore was just simple to use (when it worked ;-))

I have tried adding both the .component and the perian executable inside the package contents. Both no good. I am not sure if it is something to do with the update process needing permission. I am working on it at the moment. It is basically a plugin that allows quicktime to play .swf files. It is very good but this part is annoying.

Hi all, I have deployed Perian to my OS X clients using ARD. I copied the Pref.pane file into the system PreferencePanes folder and it seems to have taken fine. But each time i run something that possibly requires quicktime it says "The application Perian is not allowed." Now the weird bit. I have managed preferences set for the allowed applications and the entire Applications folder is allowed. I have restricted the Utilities, Applescript and Server folders and that is all. I can open and use Quicktime itself and the error about Perian comes up. Where can i allow this app? It doesn't have an actual application in the Applications folder. I have tried allowing the pref.pane file but this did not work. Is there anything in the plugins folder? I will look at that next... Hope someone can shed some light on this. Thanks.

Apparently Promethean software is now board independent. It does moan when starting up in OS X about not being connected to a board but still runs fine. Ink does not work (writing recognition) but other than that fully functional. Promethean are in the process of removing all restrictions and limitations from their software now as you can purchase licenses for their software instead of hardware. If you have the cash though the Activote systems are down to around £750 now and if you own 1 piece of Promethean hardware you have the potential to run it on all systems in School. The software i am referring to is Activ primary 3 but the Active studio is also mac compatible. The only downside though is that the Activ Primary Software does not like network-based home dirs. The software crashes. If running local based profiles then it should be fine. I think the smart software is now also independent but i am not too sure of how it is licensed. HTH PS. This is what i have been told by 2 promethean resellers in the last 2 weeks.

I have just run into this and need to use it for a project that is being run here next week. Can anyone help me to get this working? Hope so. I don't even know where to start. I don't want to reduce my managed policies to get it working. If i could do it at computer level i reckon i could get it running over the network as it is the same error. I have emailed the guy using the address in the help section but it got returned stating that the mailbox was unavailable. It is a hotmail address so i think it has expired. It is pretty cool. I like it. You do need to read the instructions though to find out what keys to use But once i got over my embarrassment it was pretty good.

Hello, Does anybody know of a free musical typing app similar to how Garageband does it for Windows? At the moment we are using Garageband in Music lessons for them to practice typing out music (such as learning Silent Night). We would like the pupils to be able to practice some more at home but obviously they would need windows software to do so. It would need to be as easy to access as Garageband is. You just go to the menu at the top and choose musical typing window and off you go. It doesn't need to be fancy and it DOES need to be FREE . Please remember that its for a Primary School, so i think Cubasis wouldn't be suitable. TIA A great time to prove that Windows users have the same choice of decent apps that OS X users have

Hello, I was installing ActivPrimary on OS X 10.5.5 clients yesterday and when logged in as a local admin user all was fine. I then logged in as a network user (our AD users log into OS X with home dirs stored on the XRAID over AFP) and found that ActivPriamry would not run. I thought it was me at first and that some managed preference on the software was stopping it working. I removed the Prefences for the software (which reminds me i need to put them back on) and tried again still no go. So i called Promethean support and was told: "Yeah. ActivPrimary 3 on OS X doesn't support networked home dirs" So this puts me in an awkward position. We are looking into both Smart and promthean boards for our new school. If this is to continue to be the same, then i don't see how we can use promethean boards. Anyone seen any different to what i have been told. Its funny though since ActivPrimary looks a million times better on OS X than it does on Windows

Hello, I am looking into Outlook for our admin staff ready for when we can use our own email server. The mail server is OS X 10.5.5 so outlook will need to have IMAP connections. Now i would like to be able to have the admin staffs' email accounts configured to connect when they log in and so they don't have to worry about doing it themselves. Aren't we nice? I have downloaded the Office 2003 resource toolkit and imported the OUTLK11.adm template. I thought that this would allow for all sorts of mail configuration options. How wrong was I? I still plan to use this to re-direct the .pst file to their H: though. So how could i configure their IMAP connections when they log in. There is only 2 members of the admin team, but i plan to roll this out to all staff members when i get it working so when they move about their Outlook should follow them. I could use webmail access but i want them to start using the system and making it as simple as possible without them doing very little seems to be the best way here We also switch between OS X and XP so obviously having clients on both sides open all the time would be useful so they can receive email no matter what (no escape ) Thanks for any help

Macs do tell you why the login failed. You just need to log in and check the logs. What i tend to do is try a log in with a user that will fail and then log in as a local admin and then filter the logs with the failed users' name. It usually yeilds some info that might be worth a look.

have you played Titan attacks for os x? this of course assumes that you have os x. i Can't remember if it was available for PC. I like this game. and also pac the man x with its own level editor.

I would first open the console.app in the utilities folder and keep an eye on it as you start powerpoint. Hopefully this should give you a bit more info on what is going on when it closes. It may be a permissions thing that is keeping it from running. Have you fully updated it also?

Maybe we could have an edugeek onelan template? I don't personally have one at my school but i thought that that would be a useful template to have created?

Don't forget that you don't NEED mac server os. There are other options. There is centrify or admitmac. Not used either so you may need os x server for these. But you can also extend the AD schema to allow you to write the changes made in WGM. There is a pre-built script that can be downloaded to do this here. I have run the script against an AD server and it does create the schema extensions. I have not used it in a production environment although i do know someone who extended the schema to use the mail and home dir quota options (something that i may do myself). From the looks of it though the AD schema extension is not for the feint of heart as it seems not too many people go this route (not much info out there).

I'm going to sound like a complete numpty now but how would i deploy these silently and from a Server share. Would it be a script that points to them? I rarely install software remotely unless it is installed via an MSI through GPO. How would i check to see if they have been installed and so skip it for recurring logins? I found some pre-packaged MSI's for quicktime and realtime alternatives for download and used those. Can't we do similar for other free software through edugeek? All the members that go through the process of creating these deployable MSI's, we could gather them all into one place for all MSI's usable in Schools. Thanks and sorry for being so dumb.

Are you using Wifi to connect? To set the time click on the time in the top right corner and click open date and time. Click on Date and time and then tick Set date and time automatically. Select the text in the box to the right and type in the IP address of the NTP server you would like to use. Hit the return key to set it. The time should change. Have you waited long enough at the login screen? If you are in a "Magic Triangle" set up (AD Server -> OD Server -> OS X Client) then if you click on the name of the machine on the login window it cycles through some options. One of these options is network accounts available. It should go through red to yellow to green. If yellow something maybe wrong with one of the servers (OD or AD). It usually takes around a minute to fully connect to all servers and thats on a wired network. Just a little bit to go on. Also check the AD plugin options. Select all Domains in forest and choose a preferred DC.

Good afternoon, I am currently looking at getting the RADIUS server running. I have configured the Extreme Base Stations (which consisted adding them to the list) and then added the allowed users to the SACL list. I added the AD group into the list of allowed users. I logged in as an admin on a macbook. I imported the RADIUS config. It prompted me for a username and password. I enter an allowed users' username and password and it accepts it and doesn't say anything else but it doesn't work. Looking at the RADIUS logs on the server reveals a little more: Now if i use an account in the Open Directory it works fine. What could be the problem?

Papercut NG I use it on Windows and mac clients. Works very well. It took me around 10 -15 minutes to set up and get running with filtering as well.

I think the enrollment key is what you need. The teacher would give the key out in a class and then they would use it to enroll on the course. I don't know much about moodle either so this info may be absolute rubbish

It must reset something in the system to say that the temperature has exceeded the norm and thus resets the error. That's my guess Is there not a button combo like there was for the original xbox to get into the system engineer mode? It's been a while since i looked at MS and their Xbox systems.

I thought that they re-designed the mobo for the RRoDs and if they had any in they swapped them over. Or was it just a rumor? if so then maybe they bloody should have. It's amazing how frequently this has been an issue and that it is still going on, and even more amazingly that people still buy the flippin things even though they are bust! It's just a badly designed machine. From the noisy drive, to the crappy over-priced HDD to the ultimate kick in the teeth for the hard-core gamer RRod. If this was Sega they would be out of the console business (oh, wait a minute...)
