This is about as random as it gets and I'm stumped. HDD died in a machine, not a major issue. Swapped the HDD and set it to reimage - same as I do for other machines. After imaging we log into the machine and check it over making sure it works; normally there are no issues. However, this one machine refuses to work in WSUS. reportingeventslog gives "Windows Update Client failed to detect with error 0x80244016." which is normally a "clients cannot see the WSUS server" or "Windows update is out of date and cannot update with WSUS version". The second one shouldn't apply as this is a fairly up to date golden image. The latest round of updates has replaced lync with Skype for business. We didn't use lync but rather helpfully it wasn't disabled in the original office rollout - it simply lay dormant but invisible to users. Skype for business now launches various screens on logon. Is there a way to disable Skype for business via GPO/registry? I don't want to "reinstall" office removing Skype for business (or lync? not sure how that will work in the OCT now, I assume the update simply upgrades lync afterwards). thanks

BC has a slightly different way of backing up than BA, rather than having rotating backups you choose retention and file copies. This might not be for everyone as depending on your dataset you might have very large backups. For example, you could retain 10 copies of every file and it will do that (deduplicated), however if you have a very fluid dataset then 10 copies might not be enough etc. You can also specify time retention and purging if you so wish. It all depends on what you want out of a backup, my specific needs were for disaster recovery and a low priority of accidental deletion, for me this works. speedwise, there are 12 jobs in total, there are 3 running simultaneously. The big jobs are 1.2Tb (last night started at 21:30, finished at 02.10). 773Gb started at 21:45 finished at 23:51 and 825gb started at 22:00 and finished at 01:24. The others are fairly negligible in size, ranging from 10gb to 50gb ish. Hard to calculate the speed from all this but I estimate about 100MBs which is what I would expect from the openfiler NAS boxes (circa 50MBs each, the have normal SATA drives in RAID 6). The iscsi link to the NAS is 1Gb non shared "dumb" switch. Source SAN is a dell 3200 running in HBA mode not iSCSI so there is plenty of overhead left on that. Weak link is the backup drives not the software (the software WILL eat all available RAM when backing up, I don't use dynamic RAM for my guests so I cannot say how fast it gives it back if needed by VMs) EDIT: One thing BA did do that BC doesn't is granular exchange mailbox backup. This was quite a useful add-on and if you want that then you might think about leaving BA on the mail VM to do so (or script a mailbox backup). BC is a sledgehammer "restore database to a separate area and extract the mailbox you require", harsh if you need a single mailbox restoring!

yes. I backup 3 guest VMs simultaneously to 2 different NAS boxes. This is the reason I went with backupchain over backup assist. You can also limit transfer speed and CPU cores to individual jobs (deduplication used up a lot of RAM and cores if you don't limit!). edit: these are clustered BC is cluster aware. It is a little awkward initially setting up the jobs as you cannot duplicated natively between hosts, you need to create the job on each host (unless you don't care and only want certain hosts to do the backing up....) it does work though, I have no issues with moving VMs between hosts and letting BC run normally.

we use backupchain for our 3 host cluster (12 virtual servers). I have performed a bare metal restore on one host without issue (I did evict/rejoin anyway), I have also performed a guest "clone" (for upgrade testing) without issue and performed file recovery without issue. Speed is adequate and backup is performed to NAS drives (openfiler array shared as iscsi).

using my openfiler with iSCSI worked fine for me. We no longer use BA though, we moved to BackupChain due to BA not allowing concurrent backup jobs (even to different targets/sources). I have had no issues with backupchain and have used it in a host and file recovery situation without issue. That being said I also used BA in a recovery (not bare metal) without issue.

We moved to a local provider who installed a wireless 20/20 PTP connection (moving to 30/30 in September). Due to geography we had no fibre to premises although the local cabinet is FTTC now. Still we saved a packet doing this and we prefer to keep local business going. SLA is in place and we have a dedicated technician should we need one. Filtering is local though not through the ISP. Are there any local providers nearby? Perhaps the personal touch might be an option?

we have swapped from our venerable squid/dansguardian to squid/diladele (used to be qlproxy) last year. Using purely the GUI it doesn't have all the capabilities of dansguardian but can easily have if you tinker with the odd file underneath. SSL bumping works (ours is a subordinate CA to our CA so no need to add certificates as root) and can be tailored to only SSL bump certain sites (youtube for instance to ensure all iterations of youtube go to education!). Uses slightly more resources than the old DG but is much quicker. Reporting is fairly limited but if you understand SQL then this isn't an issue (MySQL workbench etc) - there is a wealth of information logged so you can tailor your own SQL reports easily enough. AD integration works out of the box with minimal configuration and there are excellent documents on setting Linux up (various distro) on their site.

If you have a smoothwall box then download the generated WPAD; from there it is fairly trivial to host your own PAC/WPAD on your own webserver and it only takes a DNS change to implement. As far as the webserver, simply add a MIME type to your web server for the .PAC/.DAT and you are pretty much good to go. There have been issues in the past with people struggling with host headed WPAD but ours works just fine in its own host headed internal website (W7 & W8.1 clients).

I posted the workaround 6 posts above yours: if you use this: var resolved_ip = dnsResolve(host); then use this if (isPlainHostName(host) || url.substring(7, 11)=="10.1" || url.substring(8, 12)=="10.1" ) If you cant change your PAC/WPAD then you are pretty screwed. Java basically barfs when it sees a call to dnsResolve kicking you out of the WPAD (defaulting to DIRECT). The only alternative (other than hosting your own WPAD) is to set clients proxy setting manually and hope "local address bypass" is good enough for you (it isn't for us when we have 2 proxies...) what i'm doing is basically checking for http://10.1 or https://10.1 (good enough for our proxies) then moving those on. Obviously you might have far more complex WPAD/PAC files then I do.

Another +1 for unifi here. In total we run a VLAN guest using vouchers, VLAN BYOD using a "known" code but heavy filtering and academic network SSID. No issues whatsoever with them. Had a couple of APs brick themselves after an update but they were RMA'd without issue. We use 37 APs covering 4 buildings including some external points covering the astroturf and rugby pitches; tablet registration by PE! BYOD is disabled on the external points but voucher system is enabled. We also run a point to point with directional antenna acting as a bridge. All APs are LRs and were about £240 for 3 when we purchased them. We originally started with 9 and simply added on more as needed.

Task scheduler can wake PCs up too (from sleep, Im not talking WOL). Obviously your must have your previous "shutdown task" set to sleep not shutdown.

Raised as a bug https://bugs.openjdk.java.net/browse/JDK-8062034 I found a workaround, basically if you use dnsResolve in your proxy.pac/wpad.dat then it seems 7u71+ bugs out of the script so defaults to proxy=DIRECT. If a different method is used (such as dnsDomainIS) then 7u71+ works fine. This is acceptable for us as I don't have a lot of domains I need to forward to DIRECT.

I have managed to sort a partial workaround. If I set the PROXY in IE as a hard coded proxy rather than our PAC file then it works. If I use either "automatic" to get our WPAD from DNS then it fails with proxy=direct, if I set an autoconfiguration file with our PAC file then again it fails with proxy=direct. If I set a proxy value then it works. this is not a fix as our PAC and WPAD has various settings inside to farm different hosts to different proxies as appropriate, sending all request to one proxy will not suit our needs. This is also changed behaviour from 7u67 and 7u60 which worked just fine. The freshly minted machine exhibited the same behaviour (no software, no AV, no updates just base OS installation and java 7u71). This also means that my proxy settings within the java control panel are being totally ignored and the settings within IE are taking precedence - I can prove this by putting one proxy in IE, one in the java control panel and the proxy in IE wins.

I'm installing a fresh brand new W7 machine this morning (not imaged, installed from MVLS ISO) our <"%Windir%\Sun\Java\Deployment> deployment.config is Security is medium as I last tried 7u72 which still accepts medium. 8u25 was the same but HIGH security. I have also tried setting the proxy from deployment.config and removing the properties file. I just tried explicitly setting a deployment.config with your settings; no change still proxy=direct. Arthur, do you use a proxy or have JAVA proxy settings in your environment? Does your JAVA pick up your proxy in your java console?

had a try with that file and nada, still proxy=DIRECT. I did a configuration dump in the console and it appears to be trying I even put incorrect proxy details in (which should "stall" java just like it does IE) but that did the same. NOTE I left the *.example.domain in there as a marker for finding things - it shouldn't do any harm. edit: thought the winhttp proxy settings might need updating (netsh winhttp import proxy source=ie) no difference.

7u71 & 7u72 exhibit the same behaviour, they both end up with proxy=direct in the console. I dug out 7u60 to see if that worked and it did. Still baffled, ive tried manually setting the proxy within java control panel but to no effect - still proxy=direct in the console. The changed in control panel are reflected in the deployment.properties file so I know the settings are saving. I can edit the deployment.properties to enable/disable the console so again java is reading this file - simply ignoring the proxy settings...

Updated from java 7r67 to 8r25 and noticed that java is ignoring all my proxy settings. 7r67 works just fine, 8r25 does not. I can uninstall 8r25 and reinstall 7r67 and things start to work again. This is the error in the java console (just connecting to the "verify java" on java.com: network: Connecting https://www.java.com/applet/JavaRemovalTool/launch.jnlp with proxy=DIRECT network: Cache entry not found [url: file:/C:/Program%20Files%20(x86)/Java/jre1.8.0_25/lib/ext/sunec.jar, version: null] network: Cache entry not found [url: file:/C:/Program%20Files%20(x86)/Java/jre1.8.0_25/lib/ext/sunjce_provider.jar, version: null] network: Connecting http://www.java.com:443/ with proxy=DIRECT as you can see, proxy=DIRECT is bad. I.E. uses "auto" as we have a PAC file available. Again, this hasn't changed from as long as I can remember with java. There is no overriding \Sun\Java\Deployment\deployment.config and the deployment.properties within only contains the security setting=HIGH (same as 7r67). Any ideas?

Just getting back after the holidays and ours now sits on a grey screen. wonderful. The fallback "eclipse.aspx" works just fine so the backend it all hunkeydory but Silverlight appears to have thrown a track. Anyone had the "grey screen" before? ideas?

I had this issue way back with BA 6 it simply wouldn't preserve NTFS permissions on the openfiler box. In the end I used the openfiler box as an iSCSI target and made that available on my Hyper-V host. Formatted the resultant drive as an NTFS drive and all was hunky dory.

My advice is to ask schools directly. I had quite an issue finding decent applicants for our apprentice slot. We are obviously signed up with a training provider but if the candidates dont contact our particular provider or notice their literature/recruitment then I wont get to know. A 16 year old applicant would need to be exceptional though; since we are a sixth form I would need to be convinced of the candidates maturity. We have had a 17 year old apprentice in the past, he was a young leader in the scouts so had a decent extra curricular portfolio to back him up.

We have about 200 wireless devices with at least 33% in full active use at any one time. We use unifis - all LRs (2.4ghz no 5ghz). The main building is old and made of stone (eats signals very quickly). This has 6 APs per floor (24 in total) and there are still blackspots in certain areas (these arent used as student areas so I dont mind as much). The new building is made of glass and steel mainly, that only needs 8 APs spread over 3 floors (1,3,3 and 1 on an inner wall next to a window which covers the sports field by a surprising distance).
