Moodle Error log for LDAP integration
danIT replied to apearce's topic in Virtual Learning Platforms
The apache error logs will be in the directory where apache is installed, might be worth a look. I havent used LDAP before so Im not sure how to get it working and if it will work with server 2008? Have you checked the logs in Moodle, login as Admin and click on 'Reports' and then 'Logs' or OpenDNS One of the log report settings in the drop down box is: Site Errors, i think in the drop down which by default is set to all activities? -
Basically the school have used it by attaching a video (.mov.flv or .swf) to each of the Forum posts, Each forum post contains a video so when the RSS link is clicked it takes you directly to the video. They also have the media filter enabled for all possible media types so that they don't have to embed any players Moodle handles all that. The course needs to be open to guests so that anyone can access the Forum posts, but as they only use the RSS feeds with the users who have access to Moodle everything is hidden away. Apart from the RSS feed which anyone can see.

We've tried it, its a good feature: Couple of things required to 'Turn it on' as always with Moodle is not out of the box. First: Turn on the ability to make Forums RSS enabled Site Administration -> Modules -> Activities -> Forum Settings (Far right hand side) On the Forum Settings page scroll down to find: forum_enablerssfeeds: Set this option to Yes! Click Save Changes. Now when you add a new (or on existing forums) you will see a new section called "RSS" where you can turn on some settings. Either None (Boring) Discussions - 1 new RSS entry evertime a new discussion is added. Posts - 1 new RSS entry everytime somebody posts a new discussion or reply to an existing discussion. Also a setting for the number of RSS recent articles, the amount of entries that will exist in the rss.xml file at one time. --- Second Step: Add a discussion to your new Forum, the RSS feed (or the rss.xml file) will not be created correctly until you have atleast one post in your Forum. The RSS link can be found in the top right hand corner of the Forums main screen. The RSS feed is generated when the CRON job is run, for testing you can force it to run by visiting the following URL: yourmoodle.com/admin/cron.php Note Once the RSS Feed is created with atleast one discussion the xml file is created, it seems that the xml files does not get overwritten each time it is generated only updated with the latest discussion or post. Therefore if you add a post and then delete it and the CRON job has already run in the meantime the RSS feed will include it, obviously it will point to a page that doesnt exist. It may be possible to change the CRON job so that it re-creates the XML each time it is run but i havent loked into it at the moment. My short term solution was to set the cron job to run daily rather than hourly etc, this gives teacher plenty of time to edit post or to correct incorrect posts before they are included in the RSS feed. We are slowly increasing the frequency of the CRON as staff get used to the concept. I've seen schools use this for podcasting over the last few months. Hope that helps!

I'll write this slightly cryptically but hopefully the message should be the same, An event was organised as a fundraiser at a school, pictures were taken of some staff taking part. Pictures were taken inside the school building and have been 'pblished' on Facebook. The member of staff, fortunatly, has decent privacy settings so only 'Friends' can view the pictures and comments. The one issue is that many of the staff are completly unaware that there images exist on Facebook. The second issue is that one member of staff has a lot of ex-pupils as friends. Third issue, some of the comments or discussion specifically name students at the school, so innapropriate comments are being made. Whats does everyone think, The head at the school woud not have published these images to the school website. Although privacy settings in Facebook have been set well, any friend can view these images of any friend that can view said teachers profile. Opinions please,

I have GPO's for each piece of software we have licenses for, for instance i can the selectivly install software when and where it is required rather than having a GPO per room/depeartment etc. Encarta gets installed in Room T3 which is the department who purchased the licenses, but English have also purchased some linceses this term so we can push it off to F5 also. I've organised AD as follows: Pupils: Simple - By Year Group Teachers - Just one big teacher group Non-Teaching Staff - Pretty much the same as the Teachers group!

Moodle - Stop Editing Teachers Changing Blocks On Front Page
danIT replied to FN-GM's topic in Virtual Learning Platforms
Well in that case you can takes Secretlife's advice and assign all teachers of a specific subject to a catergory as a course creator so that they cannot create to much havoc. You could use the 'Course Request' option: Course request - MoodleDocs Or, Create a new Role in Moodle which is a direct copy of the Authenticated User Role and give that Role the 'Course Creator' capability and then just assign teacher to the role globally across Moodle. -
Moodle - Stop Editing Teachers Changing Blocks On Front Page
danIT replied to FN-GM's topic in Virtual Learning Platforms
Here is my default setup for Moodle permissions: Everyone logs in, when they login the become an ''Authenticated User'' - Site Administration -> Permissions -> User Policies Default Role for All Users = Authenticated User (drop down) Now this means that when they login they can view there profile, manage there blog etc...But doesnt give them student or teacher permission on the front page. As soon as a User selects a course they wish to view, that they are enrolled on, moodle assigns them the correct permissions. So a Teacher clicks on Year 8 English, aslong as they are assigned as a Teacher to Year 8 english they are assigned the correct permission. Likewise for students. I dont allow my courses to be enrollable, so only students enrolled by staff can enter a course. Teachers manage the enrollments themselves (set changes etc..) I then use the front page permission to assign administrators to moodle, admin staff to update site news, and then any misc assignments i need to make - Head of Curriculum - Assigned him as a hidden site wide teacher so he can view all courses. ---- Of course in your Moodle it appears teachers have been setup on the front page, this probably is so that you dont have to manually assign teachers to each of there classes and they can just roam about? -
Also if you click and hold down on the garage band icon in the dock, if it is in the dock, you will find a menu pops up. This also allows you to set startup or remove startup items.

If your happy with It's Learning go for it, if schools in your area use it choose it, if you've used it before or staff in the school have used it before choose it, If nobody in the school has any idea, go for what you think is easiest for your staff (ability) to cope with! Something they might be able to get quick wins with and gain confidence fast! What ever VLE you choose make sure its right for you and your school! I use Moodle and highly recommend it but its a free world (kind of) and its your schools choice. Fundamentally make sure you have a look around, some might say ‘Its Learning’ isnt much to shout about - others may thinks its the best thing since sliced bread but get well rounded opinions. If somebody knocks it get them to proove it: E.g. last time we looked at it as a cluster of schools it was very poor… Poor performance, Poor interopability, Poor colour scheme, Poor accessability, Poor usability, Poor functionality enabling the cluster to share resources easily, not ‘primary’ friendly the list goes on. Get value for money, how much is this implementation going to cost both in terms of licensing, support, training, consultancy, don’t just think in terms of getting a VLE into your school. How good is the support – Think up a techy question and see how quickly they can come back to you “Is Its Learning SCORM compliant, and if so to what extent?” Potential Answer: I cant aswer for Its Learning but heres an idea of the level you might expect from a expert support team. “ Moodle is not 100% SCORM 1.2 compliant, so does not allow publishers who produce activities in SCORM 1.2 to make full use of the ability to save, and retrieve a saved action in a SCORM activity.” “However some publishers make use of the cmi.suspend equivalent field “Value” in the mdl_sorm_scores_track table in moodle which has the ability to store 2 ^ 32 bytes of data often allowing for equivalent functionality to be achieved.” If ‘Its learning’ is for you grab it by the horns and give it the red flag treatment!

Moodle Login Block on Joomla Homepage

I would say that a few GB will suffice for the first year, I'm guessing the company will allow you to top up your allowance when you need to so go low to start with. Perhaps 3GB as a starting point, if that's affordable! Your bandwidth is low, but pretty standard territory for primaries across the country so you should be fine. Which VLE are you purchasing?
-
I would suggest its something to do with the way the SCORM content has been sized, check some of the config files, hmmm maybe you already did this?

Moodle - Automatically Enrolling students to courses
danIT replied to FN-GM's topic in Virtual Learning Platforms
Am i right in thinking that you are allowing students to 'self enrol' on courses? So everybody logs on and gets authenticaed users status, authenticated user can self enrol on a course and the default enrollment type is set to 'Student'? -
Moodle forum and 60,000 email notifications
danIT replied to CyberNerd's topic in Virtual Learning Platforms
Might be better to change the setting on your forums, rather than the users to fix the problem short term? So instead of forcing everyone to be subscribed to each forum, i presume the news forum is causing the most spam, change it so they have to choose to recieve emails. Then, visit this link and it will enable you to set a default setting for any new course created or existing course, https://studydirect.sussex.ac.uk/downloads/ Its also a rather good admin mod!!!- 1 reply
