I have set all my teacher as course creators in Moodle, but i also want them to be able to delete a course. I have tried updating the course creator role with the ability to delete a course but this doesnt seem to add the ability to do this. Has anyone any ideaS?

So SIMS data creates course: Ma/7/2 with Teacher A and students added Next year Teacher A teachers Ma/7/2 again but this time with different students if i use the backup and restore option to re-create the course again how do i identify that course again. Teachers are allowed to change the name of the course, and the course ID name if they wish effectivly Ma/7/2 could be Year 7 Maths set 2. So this means i have no way of identifying it in the databse, unless the information is stored somewhere else?

The problem is that its not a live link to SIMS its a weekly update of SIMS data. So teacher are enrolled manually if you like via an IMS import, this creates there classes and enrolls students and teachers correctly, we update the data to only append teacher and student data. The problem i have it what happens when teachers change classes next year, there not going to need to access courses enrolled on this year.

That sound like a good idea.....BUT...what about the enrollments. Obviosuly in the backend I can remove the enrolments using a simple script but how would i setup the new enrollments, if staff have changed the course ID name in the course settings it wont match with SIMS or MIS data. Is that Id stored anywhere else?

What nobody has thought about this?

Has anyone considered security implications with the SMB web client for Moodle?

This is probably a bit early but im actually looking at putting some code together to deal with the yearly roll-over. We currently use Moodle as our VLE,VLP,CMS, etc etc... What happens at the moment is that our SIMS data is imported into Moodle on a weekly basis updating our teacher/staff and pupil class associations. This creates all the classes and assigns the correct permissions to teachers and pupils in order to give them access to there timetabled classes. This works great for 12 months, teachers add resources to there classes and pupils access them. At the end of each academic year we archive the courses, this involves 'hiding' the courses from pupils, this can be reversed if required, and appending the academic year to the class name so it can be easily identified. We then import the SIMS data enrolling all our new pupils and moving existing pupils into new classes etc.. This also applies to staff. Staff can still access old courses so that they can import resources created in previous years into there new course. What this effectively means is that each year teachers start with a blank course and have to rebuild there courses based on last years efforts. All id like to know is how does your school deal with this process, it doesnt have to be based on Moodle it can be any VLE. If you have a managed service or service provided by your LEA what do they plan on doing for the Year roll-over? Currently our teachers are being trained specifically on how to backup/restore courses and how to import resources from one course to another due to the roll-over occurring shortly but many of them feel frustrated by the added process. Feedback appreciated.....

Thanks for that CyberN, were not really bothered about live updates were happy with the manual update. But how do the other commerical VLE's do it? Listening device on a server and some kind of software on the SIMS box that communicates with the remote serveR?

Torledo i appreciate that alot of Apple gossip seems to fly about on the internet but a number of years ago Glyn told us to hold fire on an order as all the power macs specs were changing and prices etc. I could not find any "gossip" floating around anywhere on the net about that, think i even posted the "gossip" on EduGeek and i was shot down in a ball of flames. Month later low and behold power macs specs change and we owed KRCS as pint or two. Specially as we didnt end up ordering from them....... So i do completly agree with you, perhaps my "insider knowledge" comment was taken a little out of context.

I currently work with and support Moodle in our school, we love it and didnt really look around all that much at alternatives because we host it our selves and do a lot of the development in-house. Speaking to local schools and techies on EduGeek im hearing over and over again the new buzz word "SIMS intergration". What i would like to know is what other VLE/MLE system out there have SIMS intergration and on what level? E.g: We do a SIMS extraction of pupils timetables and teacher timetables and tie them together in Moodle. So we boast SIMS intergration (of sorts). But do the other VLE system offer a live link, or a nightly update process for example? In short...how do they do it?

I can personally recommend these two companies having dealt with them within school and for my own personal purchases. KRCS are a specialist Apple reseller and gave us some great prices, and also some insider knowledge (such as the release of new machines or upgrades specs) also were able to speed up the ordering process by getting are order through to apple as priority. Specifically talk to Glyn, very friendly and came into the school a couple of times to spend time with us and do a number of demo's with various staff - absolutely no pressure to buy. Sound Control supplied us with 50 power macs with apple 20" screens with big discounts and other bits and pieces included in the price. Very helpful and support iur staff well during transition from PC to Mac. Dont get them to fit security cages if you purchase from the!!!! Get a specialist in!! If i was you id go to KRCS first to get as much info from Glyn as possible, look out for the Apple pin badge on his tie (How cool!!), then go to other suppliers with your prices from KRCS. I dont think you'll be disappointed I am not connected with either of these companies!

If the account is a new one, then information from other fields may also be copied across into Moodle. The forgotten password link redirects to Joomla install.

I wont be putting XP, or an XP Lite build not interested in corrupting the sleek design with XP. I've already had a play for a couple of weeks with a 2gb version and was perfectly happy with the linux distro it has installed as default. For me there are no benefits in changing the OS. £200 was my price, i could do with slightly small fingers hahha

I have a large excel file of all of our Year 11 grades, Effort, Attainment, Grade etc for each subject x 15 E.g. Admission Subject Effort Attainment Grade 0001 Maths 5 6 A 0001 English 7 6 B Etc for 200 pupils and 15 subjects I need to change the layout, i need subjects across the top of the sheet, admission stays where it is, but duplicates get removed, Any ideaS?

I have just installed server 2003 on virtual pc to begin some testing. Its installed as DC, DHCP and DNS for the purposes of the testing this is fine. The problem i know have is that the domain is functioning properly as i have successfully added two clients but when i come to change the password complexity policy the options are greyed out, assuming that the server thinks i am not part of the Group policy owner/creator group? I have checked and i am a member? Can anyone elaberate?

I dont understand where to confusion is...... Front page settings, tick add topic section, as it appears you have done this already you the need to go back to the front page. On the front page 'Turn Editing on' you should then see a topic box appear at the top of the page above site news, catergories or courses. Its should have two drops downs, add resources and add activities. There should also be an update icon top left of the new topic box where you can add your welcome message etc.... Moodle is easy....

Once you add the topics section you need to turn editing on in order to see it, once text has been added it will be visible. I support multiple moodle installations, training many staff both teaching and support staff - Course creator training and Administrator training. Feel free to PM with any questions.

Thats great idea, the only problem with this is that if your teacher links to grid club resources say for instance within Moodle VLE, then when students come to the resources they will be asked for the password. Looks like on login you collect a cookie....

I've just bought a supercard ds one, if i download .nds games for it do i need to convert them for use? or will they just run?

At the end of each year we take all the users (leavers) home folders and move them to an old server which is simply attached to the network. Z:/archieve/0607 After 1 year they are deleted inline with the school policy.

I have a table that i need to duplicate the contents of and write it back to the table. e.g ID subject memo 1 12 text... 2 24 text... 3 38 text... 4 45 text... 5 78 text... 6 45 text... 7 69 text... 8 46 text... Example of the table above, I need to copy the contents of the table then write back the values but change the ID colum. The ID must be unique and there are over 3000 entries, anyone got any ideaS?
