Hi folks - curious and annoying problem right here with Office 2003 and SMARTboard drivers. This doesn't happen for domain/pc admins and only on a few pcs, but when a teacher opens up an office application a window pops up with "Please wait while windows configures smartboard drivers," which then falls over when it can't find the .msi in the share to which the staff group have no access, but even allowing them access to the folder and file didn't sort it. Google Fu lead me to this article which is all well and good, but I want to tell the SMARTboard software when it's time to update thank you very much! So I went into the registry and hacked away at anything resembling updates in the smartboard folders, yet still nothing. I figured someone wise around here must have had the same problem at some time or another. Does anyone know what I need to do? It's driving me a little nuts now and I'm about to throw my toys around. Would be grateful for any pointers. Thanks for reading.

Wow - that was a quick reply! Thanks mattx I'll set that going. I'm all answered but, should the situation arise, how would I go about putting that 'if' condition into the batch file if I wanted to do things the 'long' way? Am I close? Hi folks - this will probably be a quick one. I'm new to batch files, as in totally new. I'd like to run a batch file as a scheduled task every morning to check if a service on a server is running and if it's not, start it up. The command to start eg print spooler runs fine as: NET START "spooler" And I'd assume the batch file to start the service if it's not running would be: IF "spooler" == stopped NET START "spooler" ...But that might be nonsense. Computer definitely says no anyways. What am I missing helpful edugeeks? :\

Ah yeah I feel you. I think it's particularly funny when you install it, open the sample music that comes with Windows, it doesn't play it, throws up an error and then crashes. Seems to be great and everyone loves it. Even with that guide, as a Linux n00b I totally failed at trying to get one working. Something to do with having two default gateways back in the day; couldn't download all the bits for FOG and then switch everything back in Linux for the install process. Didn't know enough, and to be honest still don't. Still, no longer NM here and the new Academy and NM have managed to get one going. Been great apparently though not touched it. Looking forward to having another stab at it someday.

We live and learn... ...Today I learned to RTFM. Separated the network cards; RED to router, GREEN to network rather than just assign the reservations and plumb it in willy nilly. Now it's happy. Now I'm happy. I said 'willy' . Cheers for the help though guys, I need shooting.

Bluurgh well I've just set up that one, but rather than go Smoothwall some nitrogen bubble in my brain or something made me try IPCop again. THIS TIME it seems to have worked, though I have -t pings going on to it from a server. I might knock that out tomorrow. I'll see... It'll be a test to see if it's still awake bright and early tomorrow morning. I know I'm usually not!

Thanks for the help dgsmith. Okay I have a spare with a dual core/2gb in it I can rope into action as a test for Smoothwall and stick the url filter & advanced proxy on it also. Looking through the setup it does seem to be the same animal as IPCop indeed. But yeah, if anyone can throw me any more bones about my initial problem you'll save my sanity. I'll report back about Smoothwall also.

Three separate boxes sadly - two Pentium 4s and one Sempron (most recent/current.) I've just got no idea what this is about. :S Are there any free alternatives to IPCop going that are as (seemingly) easy to set up? It's now more out of necessity that I get something running in terms of a proxy server that can filter out URLs/categories I specify.

Well, back in this morning and it's definitely doing this exactly as I described. I'll have a rummage and a post around and see if I dig anything up as we've set up three IPCops now and all three have done exactly this, until some time passed and our current two just started succumbing to the relentless pings and 'behaving'. It CAN'T just be me can it?

Hi all - today's question is about IPCop. I'd temporarily forgotten about this botch-fix that myself and another technician had done, but seeing as one of our older IPCop boxes is doing it's level best to choke and die I took it upon myself to go into work today and throw another one together JUST INCASE it does... That way I can flip the switch in Group Policy, so to speak, and use this slightly friskier model. Anyways, the problem we encountered was keeping the thing alive. We'd noticed it just not working either allowing traffic or using the web inteface without it being pinged every so often. Or at least not working without being under some kind of load. Also, seems like it refuses to work on a machine that hasn't pinged it first anyway... So we set up a ping as a scheduled task on a server we never used to run every two minutes for the rest of time and as I recall pinged it from a bunch of machines way back when. Did I miss something in setting up IPCop both times? Has anyone else known anything like this?

Just checked back - thanks ssx4life!!! You've just become my hero. I'm tied up until next week but I'll attack this with renewed vigour from Monday and let you know how I get on! VERY very grateful to you.

I give up. I can't make sense of the above. I've tried a similar walkthrough with an older version of Ubuntu and got further, but MySQL won't install as part fo the Fog package. Have tried again with fedora using yet another walkthrough but it absolutely refuses to connect to the internet. Settings are all fine, just not happening. Thanks for reading anyway. Feel like I've just wasted my time.

...And started to think I shouldn't have bothered tbh. NOTHING has made me feel more stupid in a long time. I know absolutely nothing about Linux, but have found this guide and becamse sorely tempted to return to a long-neglected ambition to gain a small grounding in Ubuntu and set this up. I've fallen even before the first hurdle in editing the text file after removing the network manager application, exactly as per the guide. In short, I'm not sure what it wants from the following, taken from the guide in my link: Enter the following information in the text file: auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address [your.static.ip] netmask [your.net.mask] network [your.network] broadcast [your.broadcast.addy] gateway [your.gateway] Here is a example: auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.1.100 (This I have, and have set a reservation in DHCP for the new server.) netmask 255.255.255.0 (Yep, I got that) network 192.168.1.0 (This one I don't know what it wants, so I'm assuming it's the very start of my IP range. Is that right?) broadcast 192.168.1.255 (I used an online calculator and determined this from the IP reservation and the subnet mask. Is this right?) gateway 192.168.1.1 (I can about manage this one...) Save the file and close it. Now we will set a name server (dns) address. sudo gedit /etc/resolv.conf Add the following line: nameserver 192.168.0.1 (Does it want this EXACTLY AS IT APPEARS HERE or does it need an external DNS server? One of MY DNS servers here on the domain? I'm not sure here either...) At this point it's probably worth pointing out that we have a few curves and bends in our internet connection. We run two domains, admin and curriculum, one way trust admin down to curriculum. I will only use this server to image curriculum machines. The reservation is set in DHCP on an admin domain controller. The internet access here goes through one of our IPCop proxy servers, either the admin or the student proxy determined by GP. The council upstream of us will only accept connections from these proxy servers, so no client IP forwarding. Anyone fish anything useful out of that? I'm pretty much lost here and I'd be really thankful for any help. Cheers for reading.

Gah - a colleague fixed the pesty thingy. The IP address of the server Helpdesk lives on wasn't in the SMTP list of the Exchange server anymore. I think the LEA must have done that by accident. Back in, all better - so a return to all those lovely helpdesk cases. :)

I'm pretty unfamiliar with the software itself. My predecessor here has left and I am in charge of the day-to-day running of the network. It's been a huge learning curve and I've come unstuck on a few occasions, but managed to pull it together. This one, however, has stumped me. Helpdesk has worked without a hiccup in over two years but now it's answering me back. When trying to close or update a problem, which should send an email to the user who submitted the problem, the following message appears: Application Error Number: 5 (0x00000005) Source: Persits.MailSender.4 Description: Software caused connect abort. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- No more information is available. Contact your administrator or visit the Liberum Help Desk website. I have no idea what to do or where to look to fix this. I've visited the Liberum website and my Google-fu is too weak to turn up any answers. Anyone have any ideas where to start? Thanks in advance for reading.

This is going to be tricksy project I fear. I have no real working knowledge of Linux, though interested in setting up a fog server here as we have no image deployment currently. No better time to learn I suppose... Installed Ubuntu Desktop 8.10 successfully (finally) having found an old machine that it likes, and located me a guide to read: FOGUserGuide - FOGWiki Seems pretty good! Step-by-step instructions... What I think is going on at this stage is that Ubuntu will look towards a text file of sorts for the manually assigned TCP/IP settings. Sadly, will have to re-jig these on and off for downloading the fog installation files as our separate un-filtered internet line needs the machine to be on a different IP address than the reservation in DHCP I've set for it. I have this "new" feeling about it all, and this fear that I'll enter the wrong IP address somewhere and all the domain controllers will have blank, faulty Linux installations on there so I'm going to make sure I know fully what I'm up to before I go through with this. Anyone fancy holding my hand through it? Anyone done it before and feeling helpful? If I get stuck, you guys mind if I ask stupid questions?

I didn't know that myself, but useful. I don't drink at all these days (gets in the way of training, which I do lots of instead) and will most certainly avoid Christmas Pudding (effectively congealed brandy) so I'll likely be driving everyone around, which I don't mind. When exercising, should you drink to the extent you get a hangover you've just put yourself back a whole week's physical training. Empty calories in beer do literally nothing for you and stress the liver and kidneys too far if taking supplements. And it costs loads. And makes me silly.

Well, found out that it was copying the settings from the machine I was sitting on when checking it. I don't use IE and don't use the proxy server, so all my LAN settings have gathered dust from day one. Deselected that, put it back in as it should be, seems to be fixed. Thanks guys, back to the MCSA textbooks for me.

Morning everyone. Having a little trouble with machines taking kindly to a change in group policy we made. The LEA used to give us our internet directly, and group policy used to be set so that Internet Explorer would use as a proxy server the address they gave us. Since then, they've changed this so that only a few IP addresses from our end are allowed traffic from them, so (with a few exceptions) only the IP addresses of our proxy servers are allowed, and all traffic goes through two boxes with IPCop on them. (One for each of our two domains so we can heavily block the kids and not-so-heavily block the admin side.) Trouble is in group policy we've changed the settings, pointing Internet Explorer to the new IP addresses of the IPCop, made these settings per machine rather than per user (though tried both initially) but not everyone is receiving these settings and gets the old IP address which we have to go and change manually for them as and when. Sometimes they will even revert to the old settings, which don't exist anymore! This happens despite gpupdate /force, and despite entering them manually after which I'd think if they were gonna change they'd take up the new settings. Happens mostly on the admin side. Lil bit stuck on what to do so thought I'd ask, see if I've missed anything. Thanks for reading.
