Agreed this does seem like a rather snap desicion on your Bursars side, maybe one to get them out of the red quickly, who knows. I do agree that although it sounds harsh, the removal of one 8k TA to save the hassle of a very large change over that would affect the school for many years to come seems a little obscure! IMO, they have asked you to look at licensing, why not go back to them with a different / better solution that would have less of a knock on, finding better solutions is our job is it not? Edit - Given your last post localz, you have it in your head that the option they have provided is the only way, if it we're me I would be protesting the change with everything I have. D

Still I think you may find it hard to get the chance ok'd at a higher level, people just don't like such drastic changes, even if the outcome would be cheaper.

Tell your boss to live with it and find the money, M$ licences are standard everywhere and are part of running ICT. Going to be one hell of a project / learning curve if you expect all staff and pupils to leanr a new O/S and programs! D

Personally I have a massive tool kit provided by work, it includes drills full sets of screw drivers, pliers, goggles, mask, full networking kit, loads of stuff really, but then again I dont work for the school, and I do network, projector install over the hols so its to be exected really I suppose. Hi Aaron, this is fairly simple usng NTFS ACL's. Create the structure as - D:\Shared Drives\Staff - Apply the ACL as in the Perms1 JPEG - ensuring that you apply it onto "this folder only" D:\Shared Drives\Staff\%Department% - Apply the ACL to the seperate Department folders as in the Perms2 JPEG - ensuring that you apply it onto "subfolders and files only" This way they will be able to read the root folders where the departments are split, anything below their department they will have control to make folders and files etc. To take it one step further you could split your staff into departments so that English can only write and read to their own folder and nobody elses, but that more of a mangement desicion really! Something like this should do :-) D

Sounds good, with those disk in Raid 5 you would have 1.78TB to play with! Make sure you get uber fast drives for the OS Raid1! Also make sure your mobo supports the 6GB/s Aata, I'd say its a worthy purchase as its doubling your max throughput and as your going to be working with big files it seems resonable! D

Agreed, if you don't want to re-mortgage then the i5 is a cracking chip get some good dual channel RAM and some fast Storage and you'l be away, I used to have an i5 750 before I upgraded, and can vouch for them being a good bit of kit, they run cool too, especially when used with a http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods/Components/Cooling/CPUCoolers/ArcticCooling/AC-FRZ-XTR2.html which is also what I now use on the i7 :-) D

Honestly I don't know it must be a fair old amount. If you really want to test your CPU and Photoshop try using Photoshop Benchmark V3

Depends what I'm doing, I can pretty much render and Filter or Effect onto a RAW file within a few seconds. Even a 100% Radial Blur with all the bells and whistles takes only 10 - 15 seconds which is rather quick! D

My Pc is a bit OTT I must Admit! Intel i7 965 3.2Ghz - Intel® Core 12GB Hyper-x DDR3 2133Mhz - Kingston Technology Company - HyperX DDR3 - Raid1 for System Drive Raid5 for my Data Drive using 1TB Seagate Disks. Its a good partnership, and lightening quick! D

I know this feeling for my first car when I was 17 I bought a "1.1L Fiat Cincequent Sporting" for £1000, the insurance was nearly double that on my own insurance, I then had a Renault Clio 1.2 Grande about a year later which wasn't too bad on the insurance and cost about £1000, I kept the Clio for a 5 year's I now have a "Limited Edition C2 GT 1.6ltr, 130bhp in a car that weights just under a ton!" Yeah its "Nippy"! the insurance for this as I'm now 23 only costs £400yr. D

I have 12GB DDR3 2133Mhz in my PC and when I'm working with multiple RAW Files from my 1D I end up using most of it! CS4 is very RAM and CPU Hungry. D

I like the paper tiger crackers or the crackers that are covered in chilli poweder, I forget their name, also the wasapeas are lovely, I have them down as a "Love" on my preferences page! No I've never had an issue either, only ever had 1 box late, contacted Graze and they gave it me half price, it came the next morning. D
