  1. and seems to be ok on other machines, seems my tryigng to get sccm to work screwed up the test machines
  2. thanks for that, just trying to work out how i can wipe the drive. Just deployed lovely to my virtual machine but nothing else
  3. I had a rather lovely setup with WDS and MDT 2010 deploying out all my custom images, server went pop and lost the setup. Resetting it up now to try and get back to where i was before, I've spent days playing with SCCM and then went back to the old MDT 2010 method, but now with the update 1 version. The machines I'm installing this onto get as far as the solutions accelerations screen, then reset themselves. Before I didnt have to work about putting any drivers into the image and made sure I build my new reference machine on a virtual machine, Has anyone any ideas why its gone all wrong?
  4. We have some SEN students who have struggled to even get the shapes of letters right. While we are teaching them using pencils, paper, dry-wipeboards, using the ipad is a good warm up or supplementary activity. Using apps to develop the letter shape, independent of a stylus (pencil or e-based) takes away the concentration on said writing implement and ensures that the letters created are legible. Introducing the pencil after this, we have seen that the pupils struggling have much more legible handwriting and are less stressed about the way they hold the pencil. This is what I am trying to work out. We have an old RM slate and its never seen much use, no one seemed bothered by it. Is it because the ipad is made by apple so people are forcing themselves to like it because they are the new consumer electronics darlings, or is it the mass market appeal it holds with its ease of use and touch centric apps? Will something better come along? Yes it will, either from Apple or Dell or HP or whomever, but at present I think too much is made of android and the way its talked up. A touch OS from microsoft that isnt just a regular desktop might be the way things move forward.
  5. I think if you were going down a route of having many then maybe a android/win pad would be the way forward but on a small deployment basic the ipad will give better value for what apps etc are on offer. I dont think netbooks can be really included in the comparison, because of what the idea of the tablet offers. Its providing an interface that is more direct and personal, rather than using a trackpad and keyboard. A good app to check out if you are using ipads ; Pictello - We downloaded this yesterday, think of it as a clicker for the ipad. Story telling with pictures, Text to speach and voice recording. Very cool.
  6. I'd say its a combination of the 3, with a bit of UI thrown in too. In the beginning it was "oh wow ipads" and there was excitement that they were using something new and shiny, now they are held in awe because of what apps they are using and the ease of interface. We found it engages pupils in different ways, that before were difficult to engage with. Whilst many of the apps we use prob have a PC or flash game counterpart, being able to use a finger to control has made all the difference, improving motor skills and coordination as well as the ability to pick it up and just use it. The strategy we took was to give to the TAs not the teachers, so that they wasn't put into a draw and the teacher holding the knowledge on them. The TAs were working in small groups with the SENs and could identify core problems with their skills. Having the ipad to work 1on1 or in small groups has help re-enforced what the rest of the class are doing as well as meeting the other targets they have. The apps we use, but aren't limited to: Handwriting - Drawing a letter if you cant actually use a pen to draw it has helped. I know there are low tech ways of doing this but with the wow factor and the visual feedback works well. Spellings - Again writing spellings down for some children works, but spelling apps, reading the word out, making it fun has made learning spelling and doing the test interesting. Memory Games - If you have poor memory skills how are you going to remember spellings. Basic Maths - Number identification and number bonds, an interactive way of demonstrating problems Fractions... The list could go on forever, ill post up a more definitive list once i have one of the school configured and not admin ipads in hand. I'm not in favour of having everything in the schools run off ipad (yet), but as a game changer for pupils who are hard to engage, its amazing. James
  7. We are a Mac and PC Junior School, plus a number of ipads. We use stuff like the ilife suite, comic book magiq, i can animate, I can present, Edalive and all the lego robotics stuff. Dont forget it is possible to bootcamp a mac so you can run OSX and Windows on them, so use the legacy windows software plus mac software. Much of the software on mac now has PC equivalents, including the ilife stuff (microsoft live) but often the mac ones are a little easier to use. iPads we find are fantastic for SEN use, can give you a list of the apps we are using with significant success. Mac Software to Look at: Comic Life Magiq/Comic Life 2 - Fantastic Programs not only for creating comics (great for literacy/cross curricular subjects) but also for creating some really good design work, ie posters, books etc. icananimate - the simplest but most feature packed animation program out there icanpresent - a new way of presenting information, auto cues, green screening etc... ilife - websites/podcasts/music/movies/photos . we mainly use iweb and imovie but can create impressive results with minimal effort, kids in our ict clubs are really enjoying using the movie trailers projects in imovie and putting in there own little videos and text. We also have single licenses for rapidweaver (webdesign on the easy) and pixelmator (photoshop made easy) which if we were looking for slightly more in web design/photo editing we would use on all machines. other stuff; microsoft office photobooth- cant explain how much the kids love this still... edalive - is nice but often there are similar web flash games out there!
  8. one thing i'm interested in finding out about with thin clients is "other" usb device support. We use Lego Wedo and NXT, along with webcams for animation and flip cameras and never seem to get a clear answer if we would be able to use these with a thin client.
  9. Yeah that can be def done, will prob have to be later in week if thats ok?
  10. We are a good home and really need something to test hyper-v on
  11. in the src values i have put in the full domain name
  12. hi, we are just trying to set up our Birdbox camera and we have added to the SEGFL Bird box project page. What Im trying to do now is to take this stream and put it into a joomla module. But while I can take the code for the viewer.swf and its attributes and put this into a module, all I get is it connecting but do little else. At present the video streaming is of me sitting in front of my laptop but will hopefully be birds(or bumblebees...) soon the url of the stream is: http://microsites2.segfl.org.uk/viewer.swf?stream_name=project2821 and the code I am using to put into a module is: Any ideas how i can make this work? James
  13. I sat in the Primary breakout and mainly just listened to what the rest of you had to say, it was interesting to hear what others thought of EES. When it was first announced, and figures were being floated around in terms of savings etc, I thought great and went and spoke to the school bursar about it. We are very lucky to be in the position to be on the schools agreement presently (trying to remove the capital expense and ensure we are keeping our pupils up to date) and pretty happy with it, but in the cost savings culture we are in, I saw it as a bit of a lifeline to be able to able to afford to do some blue sky advancement. My fear now is that Schools agreement will disappear and will between EES and select. Hopefully Microsoft will have a heads together and realise they are giving us a rough deal. Microsoft education comms would be fantastic. Its by chance I've clicked on the sidebar on the edugeek and got the front page of their schools blog. Being a bit of an apple freak, I frequently go to their website and go to the education section in that where it has more realistic case studies, but also tailors the site to different audiences, breaking it into school admins, teachers, IT pros with the information section it provides. Microsoft need to realise how aweful some LAs are and take matters into their own hands in terms of talking to schools.
  14. try park cameras for buying cameras and bits&pieces. Competitive on price and know what they are talking about!
  15. We use I can animate. A site licence for it was relatively cheap and covers you for both the mac and pc versions of it. We find it very simple to use, but some good features for providing differentiation of pupils, such as green screen, onion skinning and ilife integration (if your into that kinda thing) it works with standard webcams (alba ones from argos ~ £20) and what we have done is build mini animation sets so camera is fixed, a4 background has somewhere to attach to and also painted green for said greenscreening. hoping to add LEDs to this to provide even better lighting. It also does time lapse, basic frame illustration variable speeds....

  18. BEDFORDSHIRE BEEKEEPERS - NEW BEEKEEPERS START HERE Interested in beekeeping? Most local beekeeping societies run beginners courses so you can have a go, learn what's going on and also gain mentors to help you get a hive and learn how to manage it. Here in medway we have an association apiary where we have a stock of hives that we can demonstrate with and beginners have a go and gain experience and get a taste for it. Most associations also should have some kit like the suit, hive tool, smoker for beginners to borrow so u won't have to shell out straight away and also have public liability insurance!
  19. And best thing to put on a sting? Local honey from ur local beekeeper- natures antiseptic
  20. What can change the way the string feels is the the way u remove the sting, some time the sting can just hurt due to the barbed string breaking ur skin, but your also take a bit of venom and depending on amount of venom the worse the sting can feel. Worse place to get stung is the jugular, soft squiggly skin and the venom gets into you bloody supply very quickly!
  21. Bees swarming is not a random act.... It's main cause is the hive creating a new queen because the old queen isn't being very efficient at laying eggs and the 2 queens not being able to co exist within the same hive. The old queen leaves the hive with a couple of thousand worker bees (also female) and this is a swarm. They look for somewhere sheltered from rain in a bush, tree or flat roof. It's a better bit more complicated than this but u get the jist of it. Swarming is usually caused by poor/irregular colony inspection where queen cells are not removed or checked often enough James Medway and County Kent beekeeper association swarm liaison officer (this week only)
