I also do the same, I have my own CentOS VPS running openlitespeed which does the trick and also allows me to host the occasional minecraft server as well. As Jay said, it's all personal preference but if you're just looking for some cheap shared hosting for WordPress, the only recommendation I'd make is to avoid any of the hosting companies under one of the larger brands like EIG and GoDaddy.

Virgin is literally a hit or miss provider, I've had a good experience with them in one place yet in another village the speed was awful with terrible latency. That turned out to be because they had over subscribed the area and told me to phone every month to receive a discount on my bill until they fixed the issue which they advised would be a year later.... Needless to say we ended up switching to BT for a while just to get away from those problems and whilst the speed was lower it was consistent and we never had latency issues. As others have said as well, Virgin have had a number of problems recent as well, a few of my colleagues have had routing issues with Virgin this month but at least for the last couple of weeks it has stablised. From what you've described though you seem to be stuck choosing between two not ideal providers! I personally use Zen currently which has treated me very well over the last few years but it is of course using the open reach network. There's always the 4G option, another colleague of mine uses a 4G connection as his primary connection as it's actually faster than his DSL connection but if it's worth anything a friend of mine also had a similar experience with Virgin support fobbing the situation off as they couldn't be bothered to deal with it!

I would have loved a Golf but ended up with a Passat estate as I needed extra space for two dogs and other bits when going on camping holidays. Prior to getting a second dog I missed out on a golf as the one I was looking at got snapped up before I could get to it so I ended up with a Ford Focus. I'm sure one day I'll get myself a Golf though! I do need to replace the head unit in my Passat at some point as it's the pre android auto model which is a pain and it has this awfully annoying fault where the sound doesn't work at all until you turn the media system off and back on. Don't suppose anyone can recommend a decent head unit for a 2015 passat estate?

Only point to note is 123-reg is owned by GoDaddy now so something to be careful with. I wasn't aware of the fact they offered that! Pretty neat offer, certainly work looking at if anyone goes down the VPS route.

Out of interest, who do you use currently? Personally I wouldn't recommend Plesk but that's from my own personal experience with it, most hosts use cPanel so it's just not worth using Plesk should you ever want to move in future, using a cPanel hosting provider will make it easier. I would beware of the large hosting groups such as GoDaddy and the Endurance International Group, they own a lot of hosting companies so you use any of them you'll effectively be being supported by the same people so if you've had an issue with one of them you'll likely have an issue with the other. If you have any extra requirements than the ones listed I can provide some potential hosts, the main question would be does it have to be a UK host or do you have no preference.

Hi All, I thought this would be a good place to post this question as I'm sure everyone has their own method for asset management & inventory tracking however essentially, I'm looking for recommendations on a decent barcode based asset management that we can use to help keep track of all of our spare hardware at multiple locations. At the moment, like a lot of people, we simply use a spreadsheet but as we continue to get more and more assets, it's becoming difficult to keep track of everything we have in stock. It's worth mentioning that this isn't for a school as I've switched sectors however it will be used for tracking spare server hardware. We've only just started looking at this now since we are expanding pretty quickly at the moment and our asset and inventory will only get larger of the coming months! Kind Regards, Chris.

I've dealt with that list before, since I work in the hosting industry now it's quite common we see users who hit this listing provider. Unfortunately you really don't have much power as the sender I'm afraid, this type of list relies heavily on the end user actually managing their filtering so if they don't actively report you as a good sender you will keep hitting the spamrl blocks when sending to users who use that specific blacklist. We had this with one of our servers last year and ended up having to contact the end user for one of our customers to request they action the release and train functionality with their filtering which did fix the problem. There are a few places to check your IP reputation however such as https://www.senderscore.org/ and https://www.talosintelligence.com/reputation_center/lookup?search=plus.ly&action:Search=Search both of which will at least tell you if your outbound IP is showing any signs of issues, I doubt it will be if it's just the one list you're having issues with. We tend to see similar problems with our own filtering since we also rely upon our users training the filter so contacting the users via other means to inform them of the issue and to contact their provider about the issue is the only way around the block.

The one thing I do miss from working in education is knowing I would get Christmas off, now I work remotely in a different sector it's typically a 50/50 whether I get Christmas off or not, my last day is tomorrow though until new years day!

It depends where you want to have it "backed up", personally I'd suggest using IMAP Sync to just copy the data to another mailbox as a backup: https://imapsync.lamiral.info/ At least that way the mailbox data is duplicated should the user ever need to refer back to the "snapshot" they can just login to the mailbox they used to sync the mail over to. It's also a useful tool when moving mail providers

I feel sorry for you if you're still with 123-reg GoDaddy is literally rinsing the client base out of as much money as possible. Thankfully Nominet are pretty helpful in almost every situation so I'd always recommend contacting them if you can't solve an issue with your domain provider for any .uk domain.

Nominet tend to charge for manual tag changes unfortunately, not sure if they do for .sch.uk domains though as I've never tried it. Vidahost/TSO do support .sch.uk domains but keep in mind that both are owned by parent companies which are ultimately owned by GoDaddy. Krystal will support them if you contact them about it but ultimately it's about the functionality you need from the provider which should decide who you use.

When on your own profile you have 3 dots at the top right which looks like an option for options on the page but it seems they don't do anything at the moment! The button changes colour when pressed but nothing opens at all so looks like a broken or missing menu.

I've currently got a NETGEAR XS708E laying around that I'm not using so looking to sell it to someone who may actually use it! I'm looking for £250 for it, works perfectly, there's a few scratches on the top but other than that all is well. I do not recommend GoDaddy at all for any .uk domain name, they have terrible support for them and I've dealt with many cases where users end up leaving but have to pay Nominet directly to change the tag as GoDaddy support fail to do it for weeks. As others have said TSO have a good reputation for sch.uk domains but I can also hit you up at Krystal Hosting if you like In any case I'd always suggest going with whatever provider fits your requirements best and gives you the least amount of hassle.

I don't suppose anyone has ever used the SNDS system with Microsoft before at all found here: https://postmaster.live.com/snds/ We currently use this to manage our outbound IP's however we have found Microsoft keep silently blocking our IP's without notifying us and without any reason to do so but we have attempted to contact Microsoft about this and have simply been thrown between departments as nobody seems to know what the SNDS system is! Does anyone have a contact at Microsoft who can actually look into or forward on an issue for us as this is literally causing us a massive headache as over half of our front-end servers are blocked so as a result it's causing a lot of support! I figured that since most of the people here use Microsoft on a daily basis someone may have a better way for us to contact them about this. Regards, Chris.

Hi Jrit2, Welcome to Edugeek! To better advise on the issue, could you provide information as to the OS your using along with the MySQL version as well. Also did this start to happen randomly without any prior changes to your MySQL instance? Assuming your running MySQL on Linux, have you checked the mysql error log for any details as usually this type of problem will log additional information in the error log if there are any crashed or damaged tables for example. I'd recommend sending a test message over to https://www.mail-tester.com/ as that will flag up any issues that may be causing blacklisting such as an issue with RDNS or other DNS related problems. If you don't get any problems reported on mail-tester you need to try and get barracuda to provide some evidence of what they are recording that warrants a poor rating, they should be able to provide this to you in some form or another so you can at least debug the problem further. While I have plenty of experience with Exim/Dovecot setups, it's been a while since I've dealt with exchange so I can't think of anything off the top of my head but hopefully the above helps!
