1. It's not a daft question at all, we all have to get our heads round this at some point! A student would have a set of results with different year identifiers in the resultset name, such as Y7 Autumn 2, Y8 Autumn 2, Y9 Autumn 2 - so if your report attacks it from the angle of the student THEN the resultset you'll have no issues. If you were to ask the system for all results with a resultset of Y7 Autumn 2 coming from the focus of results, then you would indeed get results for the current year 11s when they were in year 7, as well as the year 10s, 9's etc. All a matter of how you start your query/report. There will be times when coming at it from a different angle will give you different data that is showing something you want to know, for example, how did my CURRENT year 7s do compared to last years year 7 (CURRENT 8) at the same point in their education.
2. The answer is that the assessment date is something that comes from SIMS, and this is the date on which the data was ENTERED. In the following scenario: A member of staff goes back to change the result the day after you collect it due to something like a typo being noticed or internal moderation. WITH resultsets you overwrite the old result WITHOUT resultsets SIMS creates an additional record An added complication is that your staff are highly unlikely to enter all their data on the same date, so in reality you'll want to extract data that was entered within a date range. However if two or more results were entered (due to amendments of data) for the SAME data item within this date range, you'll be extracting extra superfluous data.
3. If we are talking about within SIMS then you can bring up the relevant result sets in the order you want them in marksheets and in the various group, aspect and chance analysis grids. If we are talking about extracting in SQL or some other external system, you would have to tell it which order you want to pull resultsets out in and populate the output from there. Bear in mind that extracting ALL the results for your fictitious year 7 student would require a variable number of columns as it would be quite possible for a student to have more or less data items recorded than any other, whereas resultsets gives you a common framework for all students in a year group.
4. 1-9 mapped back across is always possible in SIMS, it's just a lookup essentially if you wanted to go down that route. All you need to pull it off is some kind of summative result entered by teachers which you can then use a lookup to convert to the new system. Whether it has any merit is the only issue. I spent 10 years using Facility CMIS before moving to SIMS in november and starting my new job in a SIMS school this January - for all my complaints about SIMS - it DOES do assessment quite well and is highly customisable. There is no real need to use an external assessment system unless you're doing something totally left field.
5. The way I use resultsets (which i guess is fairly common) is as follows: year 7 autumn 1, year 7 autumn 2 etc Now you don't actually need to create any more than those, because the student themselves only ever has 1 result in each resultset, so running a report on a combination of "students currently in year X" and "resultset = year X autumn 1" returns a unique set of results.
6. lucky that the OP has UPN in his SQL DB still may have to do a precheck that the UPNs all match, it IS possible some were temporary or erroneous before the migration.
7. =ISNUMBER(SEARCH(E$1, $D2)) that'll do you nicely.

Forename Surname Reg Parental Consent Internet Access Photograph Student School Visit

Student One 7D Internet Access, Photograph Student, School Visit TRUE TRUE TRUE

Student Two 7A Photograph Student FALSE TRUE FALSE

8. it depends on what kind of Academy conversion you do, my old school changed DfE number but some schools carry on with the old one, it's a question for the DfE in your particular case.
9. but you could output a series of smaller spreadsheets and import them, perhaps a year group or result set at a time?
10. Well I was going to use the new 1-9 GCSE grades adapted for each year group - however having spent hours reading all the assessment without levels posts in the various blogs I'm starting to doubt a little. The SIMS program of study stuff coming out this summer looks promising, the inestimable Mr. Pott has written a bunch of stuff about it here: Introduction to Programme of Study marksheets | School Analytics Ltd
11. All depends if you want a serious answer or not ignoring the sound bites - the answer comes from looking at national transition matrices for each subject. To be safe from the dreaded ofsted and anyone else who wants to chuck their tuppence in, you want to be on or above the national average. If you manage that you'll generate a positive VA and everyone will be happy if you've got your RAISEonline credentials handy you can download a spreadsheet from here: https://www.raiseonline.org/OpenDocument.aspx?document=281
12. Silly question - create a new marksheet based on actual year group?
13. Must be configurable - ours says 08.45 to 15:15
14. Hi You may get more viewers if this thread was in the MIS systems subforum, however - the process in SIMS isn't all that complicated. Step 1. obtain CTFs of all potential applicants. Step 2. import as new applicants Step 3. SIMS can now do all kinds of clever stuff for you! Note: even if you can't obtain the CTFs you can still manually create the applicants - but can't think of a way of importing them from a spreadsheet.
15. Hi I dug out the reply PhilNeal gave me (which worked) last time you asked this question in a different thread. "Search for "mapping" in MyAccount and the manual is listed on the right of the display" It's straightforward once you read the manual - it's a nightmare if you haven't
16. It's worth finding out exactly what you are passing to these companies - SAM Learning doesn't take anything covered by the data protection act the last time i checked. I've just dug out this: https://www.samlearning.com/about-us/terms-policies/student-data-policy-statement/ while writing this post - the sensitive (to many people) info about FSM and Ethnicity is optional - the only concern would be the UPN but they cover how they deal with protecting that in the text above. From a personal point of view it sounds like you're dealing with someone who is a little over paranoid. It's a different issue if you start sharing phone numbers and addresses with companies - it'll be fun trying to run a parental communications system while avoiding this parent's complaints....
17. Have you gone into SQL to look in the tables? The other thing to do is check that the attendance calendar is set up in that dataset, if it isn't it's a good sign it wasn't collected in CMIS. When they say "it was collected!" unless they are the MIS manager they may be mistaken in their belief. It could also be that sessions were recorded (AM/PM) but not lesson by lesson. The chances of one academic year's worth of attendance going missing from the table seems slim to me.
18. As an addendum, for the years without an English overall result, you take the SP&G (GPS) and reading result and divide by 2, then add that to the maths and divide that by 2.
19. We're looking to move everything over to a dual grading system until the 1-9 is bedded in nationally. Teachers will (for the next year or so) enter the old aspects (A*-G fine graded) with a lookup I'm going to have to add to all marksheets which converts it into an approximation on the 1-9 scale. This will require new aspects but no new marksheets. It's probably a carry over from my Facility CMIS days, but I only delete marksheets when they are totally redundant, mostly I just modify them. Is this not the way people use SIMS?
20. I've moved to a school using SIMS after nearly 10 years on CMIS. SIMS appears to offer more flexibility in some ways, but I've got to admit that setting up and managing the reporting process was much much easier in CMIS. If you are on CMIS then getting someone to show you an existing report is the way to go, CMIS uses lot's of quasi programming to get the reports just so, but once you've got one set up it's pretty straight forward to adjust the layout, the other beauty is the WYSIWYG arranging of template layouts.
21. I had the old SISRA demo but wasn't blown away, 4matrix on the other hand has come on leaps and bounds and although it has a steep learning curve, once you "get it" it's a doddle to import and update your data. What we loved is the ability to tick students on and off as counting in the stats (testing the impact of dis-applications) and the wealth of information available at the different levels, it works for classroom teachers on up with each audience getting something appropriate to them. It's not web based - but unless you really love working at home it's not a game breaker (especially as there are workarounds). The price is also very attractive. Only trouble is I've changed schools and haven't managed to get it bought here yet
22. just keep it in SQL if you host it yourself, no real reason to dump it into Access if you can do some basic SQL.
23. Hi Natashac15 http://www.edugeek.net/forums/mis-systems/130498-progress-8-measure-5.html#post1300036 I only asked that question myself yesterday - see PhilNeals reply to me. Once you import the xml files it's pretty self explanatory - the manual he references is required reading.
24. B isn't an unused code - it's a DfE standard code for educated off site. If the student was present in the AM session - 8am to 11.59am then a "/" code is valid even if they go home for part of the session. If they are still at home for the entirety of the PM session 12pm to 4pm then you could use a B code.
25. And here was the missing piece to the puzzle!! Import the Capita generic data - my predecessor hadn't got that far.... thanks @PhilNeal
