Google and Microsoft are doing a lot of work on GDPR. At the moment there is limited news from Apple as all press and contacts are dealing with the Special Event this evening. Once that is out the way we can crack on with getting stuff through to them. There are several people asking questions of Apple and I will be picking this up with Defend Digital Me shortly.

Well, as this is in the Employment issues forum, we can't take it into the main DP forum, so I'll start a new thread tomorrow to summarise and give some anonymous examples.

Safeguarding requirements, keeping a track of all visitors within school.

Data Protection applies to both electronic and paper systems. Data is data. The argument (that has been around for some time) is the signing in books allow others to see who has been in. That is why some schools have different processes for general visitors and parents. My footrest is an iMac DVSE (booted up twice a year to make sure it is ok), two 10 year old Mac Minis as emergency devices (I don't like using them too much as the lack of patches make some use dubious), home media server is 7 year old unibody MBP and present work device (until the XPS 13 turns up) is another unibody. Main home machines for me and better half are iMacs (coming up to 5 years old and going strong). It is worth saying that I did boot up my old SuSE box to clear off some files a few weeks ago ... that was on an old Athlon 1000 box (a rebuilt box from Tiny) so other devices can keep going too.

As a long time Mac Evangelist ... you use what you need. Most of my machines are Apple devices but I liked my OnePlus3T as much as my iPhone SE. I'm moving my work machine to a windows 10 device mainly because some of the thing I want/need to do are too much of a faff on macOS. Excel for Mac sucks compared the the windows equivalent. Where group mail management is needed outlook on windows is what you want ... For personal use, the Apple ecosystem works for me and my family ... but we know what we are getting into.

The figure produced by Becta was prior to the work on FITS, and based on industry expectations. After FITS 1.5 was released, it was so dependent on what other services the IT staff were involved in, it was too hard to predict. The unofficial figures relied on a certain percentage of cloud services being used and this was before the growth of O365/ GAfE, of mobile devices and MDM, etc. You need to start looking at research done by KPMG and PwC for expectations, and this is for non-eduction too ... Perhaps BESA might look at it ... I'll ask.

On the list of jobs for next week, along with introducing the rest of the team.

I try to do 3-5 years in a given role ... I had been doing well ... but this was too good a chance to miss. Going to miss the Mobile Guardian folk though ... as an MDM I really think it has a heck of a lot to offer.

Well,well ... pinch, punch, first of the month! It's all change in the @GrumbleDook office. After a fun and enjoyable year with the team at Mobile Guardian, I've only gone and moved on … and it took my dream job being offered to me to make me move!!!! No, the Lego Professorship didn't interest me that much (I have a daugher who is a self-proclaimed Master builder … nothing I built would be worthy of her approval). Backups don't exist. His instructions also mean that Narrativia are in complete control over his works and any derivations. Unless Rob, Rod or Rhianna decide to break the instructions that STP set out (which are likely to have a legal binding to them from everything that STP has previously said) then all unfinished works are gone and only existing work is going to be used for any productions.

For those who have asked why I have said £900 ... yes, I know that a MBP costs more but some folk do say that you don't need to buy an Apple device because a non-Apple Device is cheaper. Generally though, finding that is not the case ... and was looking to see if it was just me being too Apple focussed. Obviously not. Thanks to all for the advice so far. The XPS13 looks a good option.

To some extent I am not that surprised ... many LAs are being risk averse at the moment. Time to chat to SOCITM perhaps.

Looks like the price may bite me ... What would people recommend for sub £900?

This is a difficult one ... technically the school is the authority ... so does this mean that if using the LA or exec arm of a MAT / Trust is this outsourcing? I'm looking for examples to see what is being offered so that we can raise specific points with ICO, DfE, lawyers and general GDPR experts across a range of sectors.

@maturelady and I have been chatting about this already ... I've already heard some LAs are looking at what they can do, as well as some folk offering it in other sectors. To some extent this is more about whether any EG Members have heard of any offers.
