27GB Installer folder is way oversized. Our's are sitting at anywhere from 0.9-2GB. If you filter the folder by size, what files are sitting at the top? Can also run Server Cleanup Wizard under WSUS if you haven't done that to remove updates that have been superseded or no longer apply to your network configuration.

I haven't had any resets or lightspeed errors in a good 15 minutes, looks fairly stable now?

Mashing F5 works, it's frustrating but you will get there in the end. I've ended up tethering my phone to a workstation.

"Yes, the internet is down" "Oh my days" Sounds about right

I think that's just the failsafe when the traffic doesn't leave the network properly. It's been like this since Friday afternoon, starting to get annoying. The good news is the school portal can still be read!

Get whoever it is to google the words "office365 down". There's about 20 different articles from the last 1-3 hours about how there's a huge outage in Europe. Don't feed their ignorance.

We have the same problem with a few ipads that aren't managed, turning them off and on again normally gets them to start downloading right away. We're not on a .local domain though so there shouldn't be any bonjour conflicts.

It's worth pointing out this is only for early builds of the preview, anyone that originally signed up to windows insider and is still regularly updating their windows 10 will be absolutely fine. I'm actually running the insider build on my main computer at home, 10525 won't expire until July and each new build should push that date further out.

Forcing updates is never good, I don't even think that's limited to an education setting. With any large network you want to be in control of when and why updates are coming in, there have been so many botched updates in the past - the entire thing just sounds like a massive headache. On the other hand there are some companies that could do with updating their software a bit more regularly and maybe a change like that would force them to keep up to date or be rendered obsolete.

Just wondering if anyone else using BT Lancs for their broadband has been moved across yet? An open-reach engineer installed the line last week and we were switched over yesterday. We're getting a nice solid 75-80Mbps on download and around 20 on upload which demolishes our old shoddy 15Mbps radio connection. Happy that our network is no longer bottlenecked by a few devices needing updates.

As a few others have said, there's not much 'know-how' needed to manage ipads. It can just be time consuming, especially if you don't have a good MDM solution in place. Who doesn't love Apple Configurator?!
-
There's been a few times in the past where I've had access denied with gpresult, running cmd as admin solved it(despite already having administrator rights).
-
Yeah, strange one that. It actually exposed some old registry settings that hadn't been cleaned up from when I removed the proxy the first time around, https timeouts and RDP being slow on starting due to checking certs through the proxy on select number of clients. Bamboozled me for a while.

Lightspeed Filtering and iOS 8?
Valsh replied to TJSmith's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
We've got *itunes.apple.com* apple.com *apple.com* I'm sure there's some redundancy there with the wildcards but I've been updating our iOS devices since we got them with little problems. There is some weird bug with iOS 8 and ipads where they won't update/install new apps individually(without configurator) unless you turn automatic downloads on or off and restart the ipad but I've only bumped into that problem sporadically. -
Junior school password policy - what do you do?
Valsh replied to adminray's topic in How do you do....it?
Not exactly the same, but we're a SEN school so forgotten passwords is almost a daily occurrence. Currently they use their username + 4 random numbers and I've made available to staff a full list of usernames and passwords as it can really take a large chunk of time out of a lesson if they're trying to get 10-15 students logged on. It's obviously not the most secure but I'm prepared to put in a bit of extra work restoring stuff from our regular backups if anything happens. -
So after talking to support and a bit of messing around the end result is they don't even want us to use "smtp.office365.com" despite being told to use it multiple times when I asked what the smpt settings were - good stuff. The new information I've been supplied and I'm told was made available prior is the following: If the users can set TLS by port 587 in their device the settings are: • Mail server : smtp.education.btlsl.co.uk • port number : 587 • Use TLS Encryption • Requires Authentication • Username and Password: (must be a valid Office365 account) • Return email address: (must be a valid office365 account and identical to the one entered above) This will work for any device/software in the network because the auth/spam is done by O365. Devices which cannot use TLS or port 587 and require the facility to use port 25 unauthenticated relay will need their IP registering with the SMTP relay to permit them to send un authenticated messages (port 25 smtp). Details to office systems to add IP to the permitted sender list. They will use the same smtp server name / IP as above: smtp.education.btlsl.co.uk / 212.219.83.9

I didn't request it because I figured a few weeks after migrating us they might have sorted it out(I tested smtp.office365.com 587 the day we got migrated and then again a few days ago - same deal with IMAP). It seems that they genuinely have no clue that it's not working. I'm in the same boat as you but it seems like @Mark182 has IMAP working using the microsoft servers and without any sorcery involved? No idea, either way I logged a call and as you said the guy I spoke to was genuinely surprised and forwarded it on.
-
So you have to request on a per school basis to get them to unblock the office 365 servers from the service they migrated us to? I ended up setting up a relay for the SMTP, how does one put a request in - calling/emailing the service desk?
-
Same thing, "Hey can you unblock [insert video] for my lesson" "Wow that was fast". Uhhh yeah.. - Glad it didn't take too long to sort out but as the guy on the phone explained to me he made it sound like they just forgot to start the servers the lightspeed service runs on after the holidays.
-
Yeah I get the same thing, I do remember it working a few weeks ago though - they must have clamped down on permissions a bit too hard.
-
We're having the same problem, manually blocking the sites has no effect and the console seems to have stopped logging web history altogether - seems completely borked. I did raise a call this morning at like 9 - got a generic response. I know they're working on adding MDM functionality through lightspeed, they probably broke something - the entire console doesn't pick up either our admin or curriculum ranges. The rulesets are all in place but nothing is in effect.
-
Definitely working for us, smtpin.lancsngfl.ac.uk is what it resolves to. Might be the old server but that photocopier had been working for years before we got migrated. I recall speaking to BTLS about it the day after we got migrated and one of the guys in charge said there was a different address that you can use as well - can't remember it off the top of my head. He also said they were in the process of clarifying all the changes but were going to wait until everyone had been migrated over. If you make a request then you'll probably get the info you need, might take a day or two though
-
I had a nightmare with our photocopier setting up smtp for emailing scans, Microsoft's recommended settings wouldn't work. I ended up using the mx address to get it working I think. Maybe give 212.219.83.8 a try on port:25
-
Yeah sorry, I should have been a bit clearer, the only accounts that can make other accounts admin within your site are the ones owned by BTLS and BFC(The vendor they used for this whole migration process). We haven't had the need to setup more than one as I'm managing all email accounts, but perhaps it's worth logging a call and asking them what the deal is. The old lancsngfl system was limited to only being controlled by the itcoord address wasn't it?
-
It's tiered administration just like lightspeed as far as I'm aware, BTLS have full admin and Itcoord/Head/Bursar are delegated admins with access to things like users etc. You should be able to create new distribution groups by going into Admin -> Exchange -> Groups. It's a bit messy.
