Forgot to say that the school has 2 full time Caretaker's, when I found out I LOLed

I forgot to mention the support needed by the teaching staff! I'm forever being called to scenarios like "my laptop won't do Internet!" to only find they are trying to log onto a WiFi that doesn't belong to us. From the replies so far it sounds as if my contracted hours are a little low. Thanks for the responses so far guys, much appreciated.

Hello all, I have just taken over the network management at a primary school (100 staff, 600 students, ~250 workstations). I am contracted for 15 hours over 5 days with 30 hours to use outside of term time and I have an assistant who similarly does 15 hours over 5 days with 0 hours outside of term time. How does this compare to similar sized schools/organisations? I ask as I feel like I have nowhere near enough time to do the job well. I have kept the network running and 99% of users able to do their day jobs for the past couple of months but feel there is no time to develop or make what is there better! Looking forward to discussing with you all. Edit: To elaborate on the systems in place, we are running a 2008R2 server, using RM CC4. We have staff laptops, MBPs, iPads and some other mobile devices. We employ Papercut over a load of Kyocera printers. SIMS/FMS are used by all teaching and admin staff but all I am responsible for is updates and user management. We are responsible for keeping the CCTV system running and have just been given the responsibility of managing the key card door system which this past week has taken my assistant away from network problems to hand out cards to dinner ladies. My assistant is around to help but his role is being evolved into a TA role whilst still being around to help with major IT stuff. Each week I see him less and less in the server room and more in the classroom. All hardware is leased or supplied by RM. The network and workstations are spread over a large site of 3 seperate building. I seem to spen a fair amount of time travelling between them! Cheers, TomHD

I never deleted the computer in RMMC. My apologies but I am new to CC4 and struggling to use it efficiently. Thanks

"The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed" I have deleted the computer from AD and both leases from DHCP. I then added the computer back to AD with a new name but no joy. It did however create a lease in DHCP. The computer is still showing in RMMC with the old name. Can someone elaborate on what I have or haven't done right. Many Thanks. Tom

Right, thanks for the responses guys. I have isolated some non working Ethernet ports and got the building back up and running as it should. I still worry there is an issue and the problem might crop up again. As its working and its Saturday I'm going home Fingers crossed all is well on Monday! So some further investigation has revealed that the offending building is served by a 48F SFP Link in the server room (on a Netgear GS748T) to another GS748T. This other GS748T then serves the Planet switches upstairs. If I remove the link between the Planet switches and the GS748T downstairs the storm stops on the Planet switches, it continues on the GS748T downstairs. If I then remove the link to the GS748T downstairs from the GS748T in the server room the storm stops on the one downstairs. Does this mean that the offender is connected to the GS748T switch in the server room? Many Thanks, Tom.

Yeah, the rest of the hardware throughout is good stuff. Thanks for letting me know Planet are budget crap, I'll get and replace them next budget There is no labelling so that will be my first job in the morning. I will then unplug, power down, power up and plug 1 by 1. Funnily the caretaker knew exactly what I was talking about as he has heard of it happening in other schools! Just to clarify, on the Planet switches in the offending building I have solid amber lights and frantically flashing, in unison green lights. Broadcast storm? I will be coming in this weekend to carry out jamesreedersmith solution

The Netgear switches are fine. The switches in the offending building are Planet FGSW 2402-rs. The lights are going crazy and loading windows takes an age.... Broadcast storm?

I have access to the switches that have the MAC address labels eg the Netgear switches in my server room and can access them. The switches in the offending building do not show their MAC so cannot determine if they are seen by the network using netscan.exe

I am unsure of the links between. Unfortunately I have only just taken over and do not have enough contracted hours to quantify what is in place. As said... The Muppet who installed labelled nothing! Now installing WireShark on the MBP and will run attached to the switches in the affected building via Ethernet?

Ok, so some machines now have a 10.xxx.xxx.xxx IP but have no internet access although windows is saying there is! I've plugged a Mac Book directly into the switches in the offending building and its gets a 10.xxx.xxx.xxx IP but no Internet again. I have tried assigning static IP to a machine in the building and pinged the DHCP but host was unreachable. Thanks for the replies so far

I have 2 switches in 1 comms box, both show power and data transmission! No sign of rogue DHCP in the DHCP logs

Hello All, First major problem at my new school! I have an entire building that is not getting IPs. The rest of the site is running fine! What options do I have to troubleshoot? I have reset the switches across the site and restarted the DNS and DHCP services with no luck. I have The Dude but not sure what I am looking for. Some help with this will be very much appreciated. Unfortunately nothing is labelled and I cannot see a MAC address on the offending switches! Regards, TomHD
