PowerBI lets you download a odc which connects to the SQL\Analysis services, seems to work quite well. You can then just use it as a pivot table then. Not good for data dumps of course

I'd just use SharePoint\OneDrive.

Never turn off UAT!! Check the virtualstore directory, check you enabled installation mode on the RDS.

Base decision on facts, not on predictions. You can't hold your breath forever! Renew your kit, or look at other MIS systems if your looking at the "cloud" (vs onprem). Otherwise you'll end up on really old kit and have major problems migrating later on.

SLAs are one of the boring bits that are part of the contract that no-one reads. To be fair, you wouldn't really base your decision on the SLA anyway, rather the track record to date. I mean I could give you a SLA for 100% uptime. Doesn't mean you can connect 100% of the time. Even if it is my fault, what is the penalty, 10% your bill next year? Oh did I say I'm upping my costs by 20% next year? - Yes, yes, I know I'm under playing the SLA. It is really important, but its kinda a mood point when we're talking about vapourware - and its vapourware until you can actually get it (which for alot of EduGeek members won't even been possible for a many, many years because the secondary school edition isn't coming out for ages - if your following the procurement advise, you'll be re-re-procuring by then!!)

I would imagine SIMS technical staff would disappear and you'd just end up with just technical staff. Can't imagine you'd ever get rid of them purely because you have to have some sort of hardware locally and if you're offering a 2 hour fix SLA, wasting 4 hours travelling kinda eats into that. Unless Capita are going to offer alot of train-the-trainer sessions. I can't see how non-Capita support teams can operate, they'll also be limited to lower prices as they won't have the knowledge to command a premium. I doubt that'll end up in the public domain, also its a bit hard to write a SLA for a service that isn't live-live, unless its pretty worthless.

Again, saying something negative (without any facts to back it up) and saying nothing are two different cases, one is slander for starters. Also your example is flawed. Again, pretty pointless discussion because it's SaaS... who cares about the backend so long as it works, if they use SQL Server or Mongo, it doesn't matter so long as it works!!

Its still a workaround, if you need a knife, don't try and use a fork because it newer. SQL Server scales ridiculously well, alot of the pain people feel with SIMS\SQL is because of poor maintenance, which should disappear as it directly affects Capita profit margin.

Create a wrapper if it bothers you that much, RM does (and has for many, many years!). You guys forget MSI aren't perfect - why do you think Windows Installer Cleanup exists? Bah, If I was Capita, I'll create a MSI for the shortcut to the SIMS8 website (darn.... if I only I thought about that 2 days ago...)

I think they've closed that loophole. Suspect you'll get a .bak (cause its just a SQL database after all) AND be able to run a data dump report AND your new MIS provider able to pull the data in via the API. ...17 years, still talking about MSI, would you like it mailed out on a compact disc? Along with a load of SQL scripts to manually run? (And no DBA in their right mind would ever let you run a MSI on production sql server just to do a db upgrade before you even start thinking about it!)

In Capita's defence, I wouldn't use S3 to base UX standards, its a fricking UI that you shouldn't be spending more then 1 hr in a year. Discover would be a better example to rip into (if at all). If they really went to town on S3 UX it'll be a PowerShell module

Integration won't be the issue @mjk - these people have made a business out of moving fast. It'll be the missing "core" features that don't exist (yet). The problem with Capita testing is they pick the same schools for pilots - these tend to be edge cases and folks who will MacGyver it into working. When you hit the real world you'll hit problems with people using the system the way it wasn't intended to. Then you've got this is a whole new MIS system problem - this will all be new to your staff and you won't have experts in Local Support Units (LAs) to take the hit something Capita hasn't had to deal with for many, many years (like those folks are retired), then you've got the stand stuff like data migration, re-tendering\procurement. It's gonna be a interesting to watch as Capita bully it through, but I'll wager they won't have 1000 schools activity using it by BETT '18 who are (mostly) happy, I'll be surprised if you even get 400!
