We are in the process of moving onto the ja.net network although our (hosted) telephone system is not being changed at the moment. In time I will change that as well but at the moment it's just mobiles although it makes sense to look to a company that can provide both mobiles and landlines so I may well look at Gamma as an option

I've recently inherited management of the EE mobile phone contract which has approx 60 phones on it and, due to the way these things work, there are about 2 dozen end-dates. As a phone comes out of contract I need to contact the provider and ask that it is reduced to SIM only and with everything else that's going on I don't always remember to do this. My account manager seems to only work 1 or 2 days a week so telephone calls are unanswered and any emails often take a week to be answered. Overall I am not very impressed with the service we get. It would be nice to pay a little less but that's not a requirement. All contracts include unlimited calls and texts plus a data allowance so there is little room for anything better there and to be honest that's not my problem - what I want is a company where my calls will be picked up, emails will be answered within a day or so and most importantly phones are automatically dropped to SIM only at the end of the contract - I understand why they don't do it but if a company will do that for me I'll almost certainly give them the business! I would rather deal with a large company - either direct with the network provider or through a major retailer - but if I can get the same (or better) deal at the same (or lower) cost with better service then I would consider anybody! Anybody any good or bad experience of dealing with mobile phone companies? Thanks

If you are using Impero you can use that to reset passwords. Not sure if other classroom management software has the same functionality though.

Not read the entirety of this thread as, although I would like it to be, my job title is not "Edugeek browser" but one thing to bear in mind is that if you virtualise your DC your host cannot be a domain member (at least not on a HyperV system - VMWare may be different). It's also a good idea to delay any member servers starting by a minute of so to allow the DC to come back online. Something like DC starts automatically with the fileserver(s) starting a minute later and everything lse a minute after that. Unless your HyperV host is a domain member you cannot live migrate servers from 1 host to another although with SANS and clusters this is not usually a requirement. Final point about replication and DR - SANS are great but I always think DR should cover different scenarios - Physical equipment failure at the bottom of the list with loss of a server room (Fire/Flood) above that and loss of a site (aeroplane crash) at the top. Of course, in the event of the latter you probably have bigger things to worry about but sooner or later somebody is going to ask where all the work and financial records are!

There is a shop local to me that started out making sideways RAM boards for the BBC Micro - in effect a solid state disc and from which they took the name Solidisk. They moved into PCs and had a measure of success with a few branches dotted around the country - I believe at least Southend, Chelmsford, Manchester and Birmingham and possibly a couple more as well. As the PC market consolidated they closed all of the the shops apart from the Southend one switched to providing custom built computers for education and as far as I know they still do that - we were buying computers from them up to about 4 years ago. The website now is just a front page and none of the links work but this was once a company you would have found in computer magazines in the late 80's and through the 90's

Compaq was one of the 1st IBM clones, I was once told that the name came from (COM)patibility (A)nd (Q)uality although I've never know if it is true or not.

I'd throw in a couple from the other thread - Gateway and Tandon. No logos yet but I'll try and add them later if I can work out how! Tandon actually had a couple of guys going by the names of 'Tan' and 'Don' at several computer shows I went to in the 80's. Awful computers!

Wow, that's a thread in it's own right! Are Gateway still around? Tandon Ti-ko (I think that was the name) Commodore (who made IBM style computers as well as the Vic-20, 64, Amiga style computers) I'll have to see if I still have my old (about 1985) copy of 'The Microcomputer Handbook' which had tests of a whole range of them

@bossman - born the same year as me. I also had slide rules and books of logarithm tables but a different start in computing. 1st I had was a Sharp PC1211 handheld which was followed by a Sharp MZ-80k, couple of BBCs and then a long line of PCs starting with an Amstrad PC1512

I'd been at work for a few years by then! Never had computers at school but had my 1st experience of 'computing' using a dumb terminal sometime in the mid 1970's although that was purely using it to look up customer records as we (North Thames GasBoard) were in the process of transferring records from microfiche onto a mainframe. Probably have 100x more processing power in my mobile phones these days!

As one of the older edugeekers I can verify this - had a beard for close on 35 years now and have never shaved it myself or even gone as frequently as 10-15 days - I go every 4-5 weeks and get it taken back to a 0.5 cut but by the time I go back I look like Father Christmas!

Happy ending in this case but be aware that this is regarded as one of the simplest ways to introduce (or attempt to introduce) a trojan to the network - I'm told there are USB devices for sale that can disable security on MAC as well as Windows based computers making this a popular 'social engineering' attack, after all the 1st thing any of us do when finding a USB key is to plug it in and see what's on it

Sage Online for education? I've not seen that - not surprising really as I'm IT rather than accounts but I've always been expected to have a Sage account although I don't know the 1st thing about it! I'll make enquiries
