Check your pool setup as the project file will not contain any recorded/imported audio files. However you should at least be able to open the project and see errors relating to the missing pool content.

Yes please!

One way would be, if you have one, to use authentication on your outgoing internet proxy/filter such that only "known" users would be allowed access to the internet. Although IMHO the setup you have anyway isn't ideal as from what I can tell you are allowing the students admin access to the laptops, which allows them to install all manner of unwanted software that puts your network at risk. What I have seen done before is to have student laptops dual-boot, such that there is an installation of the OS for use in school and another for use at home. However you will then need some form of network security such that the "home OS" isn't allowed access to the school network.

Nope, if you modify the indexes directive in httpd.conf then that will apply to everything defined by the directory section. .htaccess applies to when you make changes like this on a per-directory basis by creating a .htaccess file in a particular directory. The best way to do things would be to disallow indexes in httpd.conf and then if you need to have a directory index anywhere, create a .htaccess (or indeed ht.access) file in the directory you want listing. I hope i've made this a little clearer, apologies for my initial conflicting statement! Rob.

If this is something that would ordinarily be done by technical users, and not on a frequent basis, i would suggest putting together a bit of a script/program to do the following: load the csv line by line value by value into a 2d array if currentline(upn value)==null then set currentline(upn value) to previousline(upn value) spit the array back out to a csv

Erm, don't really know then. We did a very similar report to list absent pupils along with all contact phone numbers a while ago, however i'm no longer with the school so don't have access to SIMS to have a look at how we did it. It was something along the lines of setting up an RTF report template to hold it IIRC. Sorry!
-
Isn't there a supress duplicates or similar named checkbox on one of the last screens of the report wizard? Have you tried that? Rob.

Sorry, edited my post whilst you were posting: If you have the "password never expires" option checked this may also grey out the change password on next logon for staff. Rob.
-
IIRC if you have password expiration set up (or possible the "password never expires" option checked) then this will be the case. There is another permission that needs to be set to allow the password expiration to be altered temporarily (which is what you are doing behind the scenes when you tick the change password at next logon). Not quite sure which one it is without having a proper look, money is on one of the items in the user objects dropdown, however it might only be a permission exposed through ADSI edit. Have a play, if you're still stuck give us a shout. Rob.

If you delegate the permission for staff to change passwords: Change their password, make a note on their account, and when they come to get their password reset let them know why it was changed and tell them not to do it in the future!?

The 2x ApplicationServer is very good for this. Basically sets up a TS session with the server, but presents the app to the desktop as if it was a local linux app (i.e. not within a window with a windows desktop). Once you've seen SIMS/whatever windows app you need for a particular course running on linux like this the world will look a different place ;-) http://www.2x.com/general/screenshots/thinclientserver/full/2X_TC_Desktop_outlook3.gif You can also use 2x with macs as well i believe: http://www.2x.com/general/screenshots/applicationserver/full/macclientlarge.jpg

I believe password policies are domain-wide, hence you cannot set them for a particular group/ou. There are third-party tools to get around this, IIRC specops do one. Server 2008 might let you do it as well (?) EDIT: http://www.specopssoft.com/products/specopspasswordpolicy/ Rob.

It was Adult Literacy and Numeracy, thankfully no longer my concern! I believe the tests embed HTML content into them via the IE rendering engine, and the ALAN tests just have static images and multi-choice options. Fairly bog-standard and unlikely to cause trouble.

I've had no problems with Promissor Administrator client software with IE7. I had the tests running as a local administrator with group policy running the software as a custom shell and locking down things - go into the room before the test, log on all the PCs and get them at the Promissor login screen ready for when the kids arrive. The only security flaw i could see with that was when getting to the end of the test, if the default printer was set to something like MS XPS document writer, this presented a "file -> save as" style dialog that allowed browsing of the disk. Installing the software, then rebooting, then performing a reinstall straight away solved almost all DLL problems I was seeing.

All viable options , however if you're serious about using apache as a production webserver it's vastly beneficial to get to grips with the httpd.conf file.
-
The problem you'll have with .htaccess on windows is that you can't actually create a file called .htaccess - you need something before the dot in a filename. In your httpd.conf file there is a line that should look like AccessFileName .htaccess Change this to something else - ht.access or something, restart apache and then you can change settings at a directory level by creating ht.access files in the applicable directory.
-
In httpd.conf look for the section that looks like and you should see something like the following after it: Options Indexes FollowSymLinks To disable directory listing, just remove ‘Indexes’ from this line or change ‘Indexes’ to ‘-Indexes’ Make sure to restart your Apache server afterwards and clear your webcache if there's any in the way.

PaperCut NG - Pricing & Licensing £434 upto 2000 users apparently (educational pricing).
-
I was very impressed by PaperCut - Print management, quotas, control, monitoring and accounting, some very neat features that facilitate not only accounting students' print but also allow you to do things like let staff charge their prints to a particular department (defined by AD/LDAP group memberships), thus aligning it with systems/procedures your reprographics staff might be using.

Nope sorry, but I do know that Education Bradford (run by Serco) for some reason decided not to use it for their BSF implementation, which is also available LEA-wide, and went for Moodle hacked up by MoodleRooms and Sun Microsystems. Just a thought....

When i was in the unenviable position of running this for a school and wanted support, phoning edexcel was a joke. There are two people at edexcel who know anything about this, one of whom was on holiday at the time. Good luck! You may get a better response contacting promissor direct. Rob.
-
Obviously the practice tests can be (Edexcel : Services for Centres : Onscreen Testing), but i've not seen the ability to do this with the real ALAN tests. Can't see how this would meet the invigilation criteria of it being a "real" exam. Rob.

Ditto. Needless to say i have *not* followed the URL at the bottom of the PM ! From: Jessie Re: Rob F Hi, I'm new here, how's it going? "Buddhism has the characteristics of what would be expected in a cosmic religion for the future: it transcends a personal God, avoids dogmas and theology; it covers both the natural & spiritual, and it is based on a religious sense aspiring from the experience of all things as a meaningful unity" - Albert Einstein --- Jessie Jessie

Alternatively, use wsus! Rob.
