We do have an option of some Dell boxes with 128GB SSD but only core 2 duo processors. Does the SSD compensate for the lower spec processor?

If we can sell the rest of our iMacs to raise the cash, as opposed to trading them in with one of our suppliers for credit (which ties us to buying from them really) I will certainly take a look. When I started here 10 years ago we had Stone machines so I have no problem considering them again :-)

@3s-gtech Just got into workand checked. The machines we have are as described above, date are late 2015 and Mid 2011's

Off the top of my head (not at work just now) mostly A1311 core i5 2.5ghz quad (2011/12 I think). Also some of the slim ones A1418 core i5 2.8ghz quad (2015).

Also, those who have SSD's, what size do you have?

Thanks all, warranty is 1 year on site. Didn't think about SSD actually, I'll get supplier to re-quote. I was actually looking at ICT Direct but unfortunately, the few iMacs we sold were to one of our suppliers, we traded them in for credit on this occasion so we really have to spend the credit with them. We have plenty more iMacs though so would also be interested in the best places to sell them to if anyone has any suggestions on that front. At least then we'll have the cash and more flexibility in terms of where we can buy from.

Hi all, we have sold some of our iMacs as we slowly make the transition back to Windows. Been offered two options with windows machines and just wanted opinions / votes as to which may be the better option to go with: Dell Vostro 3268. Small form factor Intel core i3 7100 500gb HDD 4GB RAM 21" AOC monitor £399.70 OR HP 280 G2 Intel core i3 6100 500gb HDD 4GB RAM 21" AOC monitor £372.03 Clearly there's not much between them spec wise but what are your thoughts on the makes? Dell or HP? What do you have in your schools? Many thanks.

I'll be sure to check out that website, thanks. This morning, to eliminate anything we have (AD, JAMF, paper cut etc.) we unboxed a brand new iMac, followed the usual apple setup at first boot. Added a printer via it's IP address and sent a print job. We still got 'hold for authentication'. We didn't bind the machine to the domain, install the paper cut client or anything, so we have completely eliminated this being our Mac server issue or network. The iMac is on 10.12 Sierra. I beginning to think that this is a bug in OSX?

One thing we did try was to boot up our old Mac print server which worked flawlessly and still we got this hold for authentication message. I'm beginning to think that it's a local issue on each of the end client Mac's rather than server side. I've not had a chance to do much today as we have been rolling out new windows machines. I just hope we get more windows boxes soon because apple is just driving me up the wall lately. Unfortunately we don't have any external support that I can call on either :-(

When I ran the first command it didn't bring any authentication details up. I'm not at work now but will post a screenshot of the results tomorrow. Many thanks - - - Updated - - - Yeah, first thing I checked :-)

One thing I have just thought of. Send a print job, wait for the 'hold for authentication' and then jump onto CUPS to see what's happening. I found the job in CUPS but noticed that a name of 'unknown' and a user of 'withheld'. So, and I don't know if I'm on the right tracks here. I'm thinking that the Mac is not sending the users details with the job, hence it's being held. Why would it stop sending user details though?

Yeah seen that one thanks. Although I didn't have allow internet printing checked, so I tried that.

OK, ran those on our mac print server to no avail :-(

Hi all, having been a Mac school for nearly 7 or so years now, it looks like the new principal is wanting to move back to Windows. Over that time I have become a little rusty so I'm brushing up on a few things. Back then we used to use Symantec Ghost for imaging but I'm guessing time has move on an there maybe many more options available now. We will most probably be going W10 and will also need to deploy a number of apps / software; Office, SIMS client etc. Looking for opinions on imaging software. We were a team of four (network manager, asst. manager, and two techies), but now we are down to just two of us, so ease of use and speed will also be a plus :-) Many thanks.

We do use papercut but I have eliminated that as being the cause by trying to print directly to the printers IP address. No luck :-(

Hi all, I am going out of my mind here as I have battling with this all week now. When users send a print job to our shared printer on our mac server, we get this "hold for authentication" Looking online only brings up things about keychain, all of which we have tried, to no avail. Even more confusing is why this has suddenly started happening because we didn't have this problem 3 weeks ago. Are there any Mac gurus out there who could offer some advice please? Many thanks.

Hi, thanks for the feedback. We actually resolved this yesterday. As mentioned, we have moved into a new building but the building and IT is not actually handed over to us for another couple of days yet, so the equipment is not ours as yet so I couldn't go round looking at the core switch and possible routing issues. So I had to ask the IT contractors to take a look. Turned out that HP have added some kind of multicasting gateway to their switches? Anyhow, the multicasting has now been configured and we have full printing functionality :-) Many thanks.

Hi all, I was hoping to get some advice if poss. We have just moved into a new building, our current servers have been moved with us, so the only new gear are the switches. We are trying to setup PaperCut MF and so far we have the windows side working fine, but the Mac secondary server is proving problematic. It has all been setup as per the instructions, printers added on the Mac server and shared, however when trying to add a printer on an end users iMac or MacBook, the shared printer cannot be seen. I'm posting here as a last ditch attempt as we have been battling for 3 days now. The Mac server is on the same VLAN as the end users and we can ping the Mac server from the end machine so we think it can't be a routing issue. If anyone could offer some suggestions (besides ditch the Mac! LOL) that would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

@ Plexer - I wouldn't say 'flawed', but our current policy is not as 'tight' as it should be, hence the overhaul and the introduction of a new policies and data protection training. We have been quite relaxed in the past and this is about to change. @FN-GM - We have all of users' usernames, these can be exported from AD. I was thinking that we could maybe then import them into some app / software which will then generate random passwords which we can then issue to our end users. And should a user forget their password for example, we can simply look them up and either email or give them a reminder in person.
