Sorry if you already know this, or it isn't the problem you are trying to solve: when you have youtube on a Google domain, all the video is restricted unless it's educational or has been pre-approved by teachers who approve video by logging into youtube. read the /etc/smb.conf If it's running as an Active Directory Domain controller you should be able to promote the windows server as a DC and then demote the linux one. The user profile photos are publicly available, without logging in - so this would only be a strategy if you don't mind putting all the faces of your students onto the internet. I recall that you can batch download them using an api./ It might be a better idea to have the staff photo set and leave the student one.

I don't think Ipads are the way forward because it's difficult to word process with them. With things like Chromebooks it's easy to justify their use in a public exam because its the students normal way of working. Putting an entire yeargroup through an exam with laptops is hard enough, but it's more difficult if you have to deal with bluetooth keyboards.

If the router and the end device isn't capable of VPN, could you put in a raspberry pi to do the VPN. Otherwise you'd need SNMPv3 at a minimum

I'm pretty sure that Google has had a better product for over ten years. I was looking at O365 with a colleague the other day and it's still missing some critical functionality for schools like parental access for the classroom product a simple way of using e-portfolios and file stream. Some of the software integrations are rather poor as well (look at how things like geogebra integrate into Classroom). I think Microsoft have done enough to still be relevant to business but it's not nearly as good for education as Google suite.

Google hangouts has some good logging options too

some schools add content filtering for kids when they are at home too, we do.

we moved due to the collaboration aspect - Google was just a better product. Not seen Office 365 for a while now but I think it's much more focused on business systems whereas Google is more about working together which is what schools need. Now we moved we find we're saving lots of money compared to other schools so it's been win-win.
