  1. I ask as I have some new machines which I am currently "smartclienting" so I want to convert some of the old machines back to plain XP. Has anyone done this? Thanks
  2. I hope you find it again. I hat losing drives like that. I constantly save important stuff onto USB pen drives and lose them within 5 minutes.
  3. You have hit the nail on the head there Kerry. I know I can stumble on as it is at the moment with CC3 taking some the hard work away from me or I could take the leap and go for something else which could be so much better in the long run. It would be a scary leap because the whole school is relying on me to provide a decent working network and it could go horribly wrong if they came back from the summer hols and found a network and network manager in tatters! I think the getting a new server and setting up way in advance is going to be the route for me. If I'm honest the hardest thing about moving away from RM is having that umbilical cord severed and not being able to ring them and shout "HELP" at the top of my lungs?
  4. Last school I was at had Ranger remote which is the same software with a different badge. We had a hardcore of about 10 teachers who used it all the time for limiting website access and keeping an eye on the darlings but most teachers just walked round the room keeping an eye on them in the traditional way.
  5. @Jose Thanks for feeling the same way as me! I would ideally like to unwrap a sparkly new hp server and install a new server 2003/2008 and styart right from the beginning. I guess I could play with a workstation with it on first and create my own practice domain!
  6. If I could look at them that would be great. I do understand most aspects of a non RM CC3 network as I man aged one for 4 years until 3 weeks ago! But as for setting one up from scratch i wouldn't like to bet my house on being able to set one up without a few hiccups. I am a complete dunce when it comes to VB script but I did set up a kixscript for the likes of printer networking and drive mapping BUT I did wonder how other people have done it.
  7. Er, I'm not sure I have enough RAM installed on my machine to type all my reasons but the main reason has to be cost. £90 per machine for a license is ridiculous. I pay just over a third of that for a windows license. Having used ranger and CC3 in the past I rate Ranger much more highly. That will do for now
  8. Yep I'm offended too. Not all men think like that, well ok I do but that's not the point.
  9. Hi All, I recently moved schools from a Ranger running on Server 2003 to a CC3 network. I moved as the post was a shorter journey to work, I did not move to be running a CC3 network with a separate admin network! I have been told that funds will be in place next year to upgrade the system to CC4 BUT that is not the route I want to take. I would ideally like to combine both networks and get back to a Server 2003/2008 setup with Ranger on top. My last school transferred from Novell to Ranger BUT we got a third party in to install the system. Now I can manage a Server2003 network BUT I might struggle with the initial setup, such as GPOs that might need to be set up at the beginning. Can anyone let me know of any pitfalls that I might face and how hard it would be to combine both networks? Thanks
  10. This looks like a winner to me! I neglected to say that the resultant show needed to be played through a DVD player. This looks like a good start. I did try premiere elements this morning but the results were a bit rubbish. But as the saying goes sh*t in, sh*t out
  11. HI all, Our school is getting an official opening ceremony in June so somebody up high sent some pics off to an outside agency and in return for £100 they received a dvd with a slide show with titles and music! Now I can knock up a slideshow with idvd on a mac which would take 10 minutes but would not be quite as nice as the transitions were quite swanky. What would edugeekers recommend to use for this task so we can keep our £100 in future! Thanks
  12. Hi, I keep going through those phases where I delve into php and then don't. I'm on a don't at the moment. I am trying to see what I would need to edit to reduce the height of the changing graphics at the top of the front page. I foolishly just edited the graphics but they ended up smaller but on a black background! Can somebody point me in the right direction? Thanks
  13. Overall it doesn't look like the end of my moodle days then. Thanks for all the replies, it's obviously a topic that a lot of you have an interest in. Reg:D
  14. I have just found out that our LEA (Wirral) has just picked Uniservity as our VLE. I'm a bit gutted as I have been using moodle for years. Anyway it turns out that Moodle is not Becta approved so it couldn't have been considered when choosing one. Does anyone know any different or are their LEA using moodle? All the schools are meeting next week to marvel at Uniservity so I just want to know the facts before I go there and make a fool of myself! Thanks:(
  15. Mario Kart Wii is ace. Very addictive and even my wife and daughter play it so Nintendo must be doing something right. Saying that my son won't leave his dungeon/bedroom as he is glued to WOW as usual.
  16. Has anyone had a play round with this free wiki creation site? It does look quite interesting and if you are an education establishment you can register for an ad free version. Wiki - Free Website - Wetpaint
  17. I implemented secure passwords at my last school. I went through about 2 weeks of abuse and then everyone realised it wasn't so bad. The only downside was I had to set the policy for the students as well as I couldn't find how to apply it to just groups.
  18. It's the end of my second week in a new school. My post is a new post as network manager. I have been going through the system over this time and noticed that most of the teaching staff (well over half) still had their default password as their password. So in the staff briefing this morning I mentioned this and told them that I would be doing a forced password change for them all on Monday. Well the dagger looks I got and the sudden intake of breath from the staff was amazing. It's as if I said I was personally going to go and impregnating every one of their daughters! At the end of the briefing a scary PE teacher came over and was asking me how she was going to do her job if her password was changing all the time, which is not what I had told them. Anyway I'm looking forward to Monday now! And I though the staff so far had like d me.
  19. Ouch! Why would anyone be stupid enough to do that? The main reason people end up on a contract is because they don't have to pay for handset up front. I found the same phone on three.co.uk for £23 a month for the second deal down on that site. They are charging £27 a month plus the extra for the xbox. Absolutely mental?
  20. And why are you so bitter against celery? What has it ever done to you?
  21. I have just moved from a non RM school to an RM CC3 school. What did you move to and was the move traumatic? We also have a support contract on most things and although it's an easy life I would still like to bin most of the support as the costs are ridiculous
  22. If you do install it on their machines then you are breaking the agreement. Well that's my understanding. We have to get the staff to buy the schools agreement disc @ £15 a pop. They don't like it but it's that or nothing. I did look into this at great detail as one of the School union reps was on my back about it.
  23. It does make sense! BUT it does seem weird that it isn't an option within word.
  24. As far as I can tell it's as follows. Member of staff takes 150 students details such as address, parents first names etc and then merges all of these into a letter to send out to the parents. They then print out the resultant merged document. Then they want to save the document as 150 separate letters to keep on file. Does that make sense?!!
