Hi All, I am currently installing moodle onto a linux box, ubuntu server. Can anyone suggest how I could do this or point me to an article on installing moodle like this? Thanks

Hi All, Despite the fact that we have had macs running in our school for the whole school year I can still not claim that they have worked they way I wanted them to. Firstly they were local log on, then they were added to active directory THEN i went on a mac course and set up a mac server so that I could control the user experience while still letting users authenticate to active directory. My problem is that when I bind the workstations to both open and active directory the machines tend to lose the active directory and will not let users log on. It doesn't happen straight away. But when it does I have to remove the active directory binding and then add it again. The machine may work then for a day a week or more but then it will lose it again? there are 30 machines and every day I have resorted to logging in to them as a test user and then fixing the broken ones. this is time consuming and stupid! Does anyone have any ideas? Oh yeh I'm on 10.5.6.

All sounds good to me. How about editing msi's so that the shortcut goes into the correct folder or can that be done in a different way?

I have a fog server running on an old workstation which I set up just to see if I could get it working. I did and before I knew it I had it all up and running. I now need to move it to a better workstation with a much larger HD. Is it possible to copy all the system and files to another location and then copy them back onto another machine? I would clone it with my fog server but, well you can see my problem! thanks

What about software distribution? I have a ghosting server (fog) in place so alright for that. There must be peeps out there using vanilla but rely on extra tools to help them with the job? Thanks

Hi All, Forgive me if I sound like I'm not sure what I'm on about, that for two reasons. 1. I normally don't go near SIMS but we are between SIMS managers and 2. I didn't pay attention in the past when working with SIMS. Anyway at out last ICT strategy meeting I was asked to look into the learning gateway, how we could go about getting it and using it and also what security policies we would need to put in place. I believe our LA may well be setting up a gateway for all schools but only whispers at the moment. The worry was that our data security policy may be out of date and may not cover the use of a learning gateway. Does anybody have a policy that covers this? Thanks

As the title really! I'm investigating what I would need to buy or get for free to help me admin a domain without the aid of CC3. I'm thinking along the lines of tools to help creating user accounts and then generally looking after those accounts. Creating and distributing software packages. Monitoring software eg. Lanview Anything else? Thanks

OK, FN-GM I take it back. I had not created a dns entry on the mac server itself. I did that and now it works on all domains, macs and pcs BUT I can't get it to work from outside the school. Mac OS X Server is my public address to the site. I can browse to that but if I click on a wiki group it bums out. I'm guessing that I need to register a domain name and then re-jig all my internal dns to point to that.

The thing is I have added a dns entry on both domains! To access it externally I guess I might have to buy a domain name, and then i suppose I can add that domain name to the mac server so I can then access the site both externally and internally from the registered domain name eg. prentonwiki.org?

Ok, I thought i'd try and utilise our mac server a bit more and set up a website from it so the staff could use the wiki feature to share teaching practices. My downfall seems to be that I can access the server from a workstation by typing mac-1 in the address bar from one domain but the other I have to type the ip address in 10.60.*.*. Also I have an external IP address pointing to it so I can type 212.248.*.* and that will work to. My problem starts to appear when A user tries to click on a wiki link and then it breaks. The webserver is looking for http://mac-1/groups/wiki and when a user clicks on to it after browsing to it from the ip address it will look for 10.60.*.*/groups/wiki and fails. Does anyone know how I could get round this? Would I need to change a file somewhere in the backend or create duplicate sites from server options or something else? Thanks

I could set up an old laptop, and indeed that is how it has been done in the past BUT if I could have a simple read only virtual image, the students could do their best all at the same time in a whole ict suite and then when they finish the image is as it was before they started. Wow that was a long sentence.

Our ICt dept want to do stuff with the students for their coursework that CC3 won't let them do, and I'm not sure I would want them to do it. So i suggested that they could run a virtual machine and once it was turned off no harm was done to anything. So they agreed and now I can't deliver! I have virtualbox running with an XP image but i can't work out how to make it read only. I have even made the image read only but whenever I save something on the desktop and trun the virtual machine off, I select save image( as a student might) and then when i turn the image back on the changes are still there. I'm guessing it is creating an additional file somewhere but I don't want it to. Has anyone else done this? Thanks

A colleague sent me an email this morning about a brilliant website - see title. It was selling Gold iPhones for ridiculously cheap prices. Needless to say i asked the colleague why she had sent it and she didn't. How do these scams end up sending an email from a users hotmail account to all their address book. She is a bit upset as it went to everybody she knows so she has been mailing them all to apologize.

yeah, I had a look at the admin manual but a lot of it is if you have server access and they don't seem too keen to tell you how to export users, I guess thye don't want users to move away. I think I might have to go for a PITA method.

I have demo'd zimbra to our ICT strategy group as our current desknow installation will be a cost option provided by our LA whereas zimbra is free! I have zimbra all up and running but I need to try to work out how I can move about 70 accounts across to it from desknow. One problem I have is that I do not have access to the desknow server but I do have an admin account for the web frontend. Before i go in to it any further has anybody else gone through this process? thanks
