I'm not too worried, myself. I might start going to the rifle range twice a week, rather than one however. >____>
  2. I guess 10.5 would be even stranger. "Yes, I am cutting this raisin in half, I need to make the hourly quota".
  3. I'd personally chuck an SSD into it. 16gb ram would be useful for virtual machines, but I think that the processor would be the first to bottleneck, rather than ram. Depends on how intense the VMs will be, however. If they need more than 8gb of ram, that'll be the best way to go down.
  4. Man, this reminds me to get a decent racing rig set-up at some point. I miss the days of playing Initial D in a good old bucket seat.
  5. Indeed. We still have a bunch of terrastations knocking about here. Terrible things, by my reckoning.

    F1 Chat

I must admit that, yeah. I know Pirelli had issues with getting to the track before hand for the analysis, but it's disappointing to see that someone can go into the pits after the first lap and still be competitive enough to get back up the field. There just didn't seem to be any drop off or degradation to get some excitement into the race.
  8. Whooo... Christmas come early. Anyway, PM sent
  9. Ours is open only to staff, but we've had the occasional student try and send an email. The best one we've had is a student send in a message during the half-term holidays, on Easter Sunday saying they couldn't log into our VLE. They then followed this up on Easter Monday stating "i still have not gotten a response after 24 hours..." I know us IT peeps are often known for working at silly hours, but you would have thought a bank holiday weekend would be a good sign that your issue isn't going to be fixed.
  10. At home/in the car, Japanese pop, rock and metal. In the office... classic prog such as Rush, floyd and rainbow.
  11. As has been said, replace the lot. The same thing happened in my old uni house. Landlord changed just the basic parts, end result was the whole thing snapping off later down the line, causing flooding all over the place. Better be safe than sorry (for the extra fiver or so, anyway).
  12. If it's a newish board, you might be able to get a simple replacement (exact model)... Although it's an annoyance, a quick swap-in and swap out will get you up and running. Depends on how much the MB will cost, however.

    Lan Parties

I've mostly gone to closeknit LANs, such as small house parties and the ones organised by Warwick University Computer Society (got to love the week long LAN, always good )
  14. I bought the same one as OP about two weeks ago, but I got it from DABs, instead. Zyxel NSA325 2-Bay Power Plus NAS Diskless (1.6GHz CPU) V2 (NSA325V2-EU0101F) - dabs.com
  15. If you can, I'd recommend getting a fan of some sort to help extract the air or get some airflow into the room in the meantime (with everything powered down, of course). I've found that burning smells can linger for some time.
  16. Get him to take a look at some of the custom built laptops at pcspecialist (PCSPECIALIST - Custom PCs, Custom Computers, Custom PC, Desktop PC, Custom Built Computers, Gaming PC) They seem to do decent bits of kit in different sizes and options, I'll be getting a 13.3" laptop from them soon enough myself.
  17. £650 for an end terraced 2 bed house in Alcester, Warwickshire. I could get it cheaper a couple of miles down the road, bringing it down to £550 or so, but I'd rather pay more and live somewhere nice.
  18. I tend to only have games I actively intend to play on my SSD. You can install games to a different hard-drive, so the stuff that I might only dip in and out of are stored there. (I've found little point having games installed on my SSD for 90% of the time, given it doesn't impact loading times all that much. Only multiplayer games I've got on the solid state).
  19. I've heard of Fungus that live off and thrive in radioactive enviroments, Radiotrophic fungus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia , which looks pretty cool. I think it just goes to show that given time, things can adapt to almost any circumstance.
  20. I believe in such situations, if you tell eBay that the guy walked away from the purchase, it requires you to at the least offer a second chance offer. I'm not 100% sure on this, but I would guess they are clued up to people just collecting and not paying ebay fees. Making a Second Chance Offer

    Home Server

I'd be tempted to go for a Microserver, if they ever do the decent cashback offers again. It seems like they won't be, from what I've been reading, which is a shame but I guess I can't knock them for it.
  22. ~28 miles each way, so 56 a day total. It's not great, but I've had worse so can't complain. Almost all motorway so takes me about 35mins each way.
  23. We've recently got a M73 Tiny Ultra-SSF in place here, getting this one ready for imaging/sysprep with the plan for 400 of them to replace almost every desktop in the academy. Fits nicely onto the back of the monitor. They are very good with regards to speed, packing a decent punch from the i3 model we've got. The brackets are second to none, sturdy metal construction which will almost certainly take up to the abuse the kids will throw at them. I wouldn't want anything else. I'd also point out that the people supplying them to us, @Millgate, sorted us out with exceptional service, helping us every step of the way.
  24. Strip out 400 old All-in-one machines ready for collection. Get 400 new machines put into place. Re-image laptops to get them onto Windows 7. Rebuild a currently down Xenserver. New virtual server installs on the above. Replace network switches. The normal things of new student/staff emails and user accounts. A tidy up of the student/staff resources and user areas. Getting the start of year fullback up done and moved off site. Hmm, I'm just getting started on the list, I'm sure there'll be many more things tossed onto this by the end of the summer.
