I've just started trying to implement this and have spent a day or so pouring over various step by steps etc. We are running WDS on a Server 2003 box and I can PXE boot to it from one PC without a problem, but there is another PC which completely ignores it. From what I can see the settings are correct for both. Another question, is there a way to get the automated name generation to do incremental letters rather than numbers?

Tell a lie, it appears the GPO is now overriding Ranger!

The problem with that is, is that it has to be tied to the computer, not that user. And in reference to what User3204 said, Ranger overrides what a GPO does with Desktops. Thanks for the suggestions

I'm being busy on here today! One of the librarians has asked if we can put a background on a group of eight PCs that is different to our standard blue desktop (very extravagant around here). I thought 'no problem' so did a GPO for those PCs but it didn't work, I think this is because Ranger has been set to disallow backgrounds for all users and as far as I can see there isn't a way to set this to a Per Computer Basis. Am I right in thinking this? Thanks again guys

Against my better judgement the Music department were allowed to buy a load of Macs plus a Mac server during the summer and have them all set up. We aren't a Mac school so I have very little training with the beasties. All the user profiles are stored on the Mac server along with the users personal folders (Z:\), these folders are transferred to the particular Mac the student logs onto and when they log off all the files are transferred back overwriting older files. One of the problems we're having is that the information isn't always being copied back to the Mac server so the student ends up with a new version on the local machine rather than on the server. The second issue which is possibly connected, is that students can manage to log on to the local machine with their network username etc if the Local machine isn't connected to the server. Any ideas?

Recently installed a bluetooth USB adaptor on a laptop and it somehow managed to kill the built-in wireless card connection during the install. The wireless won't pick up an IP and connect to the router anymore. I have uninstalled the Bluetooth adaptor + software, uninstalled and reinstalled the wireless card + software but it still refuses to work..... What the hell is going on?

There is a switch in this building that doesn't have a console port and we don't have a listing of it's IP address which is making it very difficult to manage it in any way. This particular switch is routing from another switch and while I can find a list of MAC addresses for this port, I can't get the IPs so I can identify the switch. I think that all makes sense Any ideas?

Popping back onto this thread. I seem to be having an increasing problem similar to my initial post. Particularly with HP 1020s and HP1005s, it's starting to drive me mad as I'm having to reinstall these printers every couple of days to get it to work. The REALLY annoying thing is, is that it's happening with printers that aren't even shared!

Morning All I did a search to see if anyone had had any previous problems with RPM but couldn't find anything so apologies if I'm just being blind. Anyway, we reinstalled our printer server during the summer holiday and we are now having a problem with RPM in that it doesn't seem to pick up a good portion of the users print jobs. They send it and according to e.g Word, the print job has been sent but RPM doesn't have any log of it. Any ideas what is going on? Thanks

I have just started having a similar problem but it is only with new users. The odd thing is, is that if I log that user on to another machine after their initial log on, the Windows XP theme then starts to work. Is this likely to still be a corrupt profile issue? Thanks

Plug the mouse and keyboard into another PC and see if they work. If they do then it's either a software fault (which you've just put paid to) or something internally on the computer such as (mentioned by someone already) the motherboard.

I've installed Notebook on our summer image machine and the problem I'm getting is that whenever a new user to that machine tries to access IE, Notebook shoots up some installer runs through for a few seconds and then sticks an icon on the desktop. The problem with this is that we don't necessarily want all users using it, particularly exam students. Any ideas how to stop it doing that?

We use a logon script that sets the printers based on the computers Location. You could set the logon script to assign printers based on the username of the user.

I found Impero to be pretty cheap, especially if you compare it to most Remote Assistance programs like NS Manager

We currently do this and it does make life a hell of a lot easier. Maybe there could be a tutorial set up if anyone knows the ins and outs of it.

Just about everything here is saved to the network except some programs run locally and their files are saved in the programs directory. The annoying thing is that every other time I do a format at home or at work I'm obsessive to make sure that all programs are backed up etc Currently waiting on WCBS to get back to me so I reinstall the the program, was going to try and do a data recovery but I've booted the PC various times and I can't authorise spending money on new software.

I made a very big boo-boo in a similar vain on Wednesday. Formatted the accountants computer because of some issues, realised I had forgotten to take a backup of Albacs-IP. Realised afterwards that her old machine (out of use for two months) might be a viable option except that the hard drive is dead. So have spent a lot of time trying to reinstall it and configure it. There are words to use but probably shouldn't :|

Disabling Bi-Directional seems to have worked with the 2600n. Going to test that with the HP 1020s I've had similar problems with once I get chance.
