  1. Hi I normally have some shares mounted on my laptop (mint) to a file server (windows) if i close the lead and the laptop sits in the suspended/hibernated state the samba mounted shares hang the machine when i re open the lid and try to use them. any ideas? EDIT: seems if a program has something open it locks it. not always easy to find the program with file open

  4. hows the cpu usage on the host?
  5. I was just doing some work on one of these, I setup some vlans on them, but the ip forwarding between the vlans didn't seem to work, each vlan had a vlan interface with a suitable ip address but i couldn't get the switch to act as a router between the vlans. Is there a secret hidden enable ip forwarding option anywhere?
  6. I commented a month or two ago that a post you made was showing up as 1970 on the android app.
  7. computer startup script via group policy (of the old domain) to join the computers to the new domain something like this if exist "%SYSTEMROOT%\Temp\MigrateDomain.txt" goto FileExists NETDOM /Domain:MYDOMAIN /user:adminuser /password:apassword MEMBER . /JOINDOMAIN echo FRED > "%SYSTEMROOT%\Temp\MigrateDomain.txt" shutdown -f -r -t 0 :FileExists tbh you don't really need all the bit about checking the fileexists
  8. one nice thing is the consistent os across their switches.
  9. tool for making ACLs https://conradjonesit.wordpress.com/2013/06/05/extremexos-policy-maker-version-2/ Probably a little buggy and might need fiddlying with the output files slightly

  14. hi i am writing an web application, which allows an admin user to login and change the settings of the application (name of mysql db, etc) which i will store in a config file. currently i am developing this on linux mint (my desktop) but mint probably isn't the target distro. how should i set the permission on the .conf file ? currently apache looks it is running as www-data should i just make www-data the owner of the conf file change who apache runs as change the permission of the conf file thanks conrad

does the mysql client do connection pooling? am i risking poor performance by opening and closing connections, or does the client handle this?
  23. apt-get install *scratches head* tar -xvf tarball.tgz ./configure make sudo make install (Much Simpler!) -------------------------- Disclaimer I love linux and use it on all machines, but unfortunately dia does not come close to visio, libreoffice is fine for me but i can understand why some people need ms office, the list of software is endless but the linux situation is getting better all the time and has really grown in the last few years and for me as a tech its more usable than windows, dear god I hope I never see "Add New Hardware Wizard" as long as I live. But I don't think that alters for a lot of people the software they need is only available on windows.
  24. i think it boils down to software most of the time, depends on the users needs. windows is an unecessary evil to run a lot of software but with the advert of "always-on", cloud and browser based software its really starting to change,
  25. if its one thing asking to be hacked, its lastpass, totally see the need for it though and probably a lot more secure than postit notes!
