Policy Central Professional Entrprise Forensic Software hell
jamin100 replied to tosca925's topic in Educational Software
I installed it a few weeks ago myself (dont trust link2ICT to touch our servers... I have 60 toshiba a200 laptops all identical built with the same image. I installed PCE on 30 of them and it stopped the internet working on them. The only way to get it back was to uninstall PCE. Spoke to link2ICT (urgh) and was told that it was because we were still a full proxy school... When i told them that i have a dozen workstations with PCE installed and no problem they got confused!!! -
Ok here's what i want to do. I want/need to let teachers have access to their own classes individual home areas. The home areas are currently stored on \\server\users What i had thought of doing is creating a folder for each class with shortcuts to each users folder on the share and then give the staff read only access to those folders. This works fine. The problem is if a teacher clicks on the shortcut to the users home area and then click the UP button insted of the back button they then see the whole of the users directory. ie \\server\users rather than \\server\users\user1 Does anyone know a way that i can either stop them using the up button or a better way to achieve what i want? Thanks

I have 4 laptop trolleys with 15 laptops in each. Each trolley has 3 Dlink WAP's. These are all connected to a switch and then into the network. We then have 60 Toshiba A200's. Not really had any problems with them here. We use Loxit trolleys that can hold 18 in each.

Symantec Ghost Solution Suite License HELP!!!
jamin100 replied to jamin100's topic in Wireless Networks
so your saying i need to install suite 2 on one server and 2.5 on another just to make use of all the licenses???? After speaking to symantec for what seemed like hours, i was told that they are going to send me a new license file based on the two certificate numbers that i provided them with. This should then give me 1 file which SHOULD provide me with all 148 licenses in the console.... I'm not holding my breath though.. Oh and i forgot to mention that before all of this they wouldn't put me through to technical support because i hadn't paid for it... Bunch of W4nk£r5!!!! -
Ok, here's the deal, Last August I brought Ghost Solution Suite 2 with 78 licenses. Worked fine not a problem. Now, we have a need for just under 150 licenses so i go to pugh.co.uk and talk to the sales rep about buying more licenses. He tells me that solution suite 2.5 is out so i would have to buy that. I asked him if the 78 licenses i already have would work and he said YES. So i purchase another 70 licenses from him and a set of solution suite 2.5 media. I finally get the license details via email and set about installing 2.5 on my server. Go to register the license files with the console and get a message saying the licenses are from a previous version and cannot be used with 2.5. Not a big deal as the media was only £16 so i thought i'd re-install suite 2 and register all the licenses with that. - nope can't do that either... I've installed solution suite 2 on a NEW server.. Registered the old license and it shows as 78 registered in the console... i then register the new license whic should take the license up to 148 but...... it doesnt... It now shows only 70 !!!??? Symantec support are useless... been on and off the phone to them for a good hour and a half and havn't got anywhere!!!!

Would these be ok as core switches though?
-
Hi, We are having a new ICT suite built to replace an old one which is going to hold 15 computers. In my main comms cab i have 2 D-Link DGS12-24T switches acting as the core switches. Now i need to buy a new switch for the new ICT suite. Is it worth me buying a beefier managed switch such as a ProCurve 1800 and using that as the core switch and using the d-link in the ICT suite or just buying another d-link? I only really have £200 to play with and the switch must be 24 port and full gigabit. No fiber required Thanks

You could have a RoboCopy script set as logoff task Example robocopy c:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\outlook.pst E:\Outlook_Backup\ /e /r:0 /w:0 save it as a .bat & download robocopy from tinterweb

LAN Ranger alternative
jamin100 replied to cookie_monster's topic in Network and Classroom Management
Yep I use LanView and Slideshow here. Works 100% I've got a dedicated workstation setup just scrolling through all the active screens on the network. All you do is install the server software on a normal machine then install the small client application on each machine and its done! You can control the PC's remotly which is great when you get a call from someone the other side of the building who cant seem to change their font! -
My girlfriend has just brought a 12" advent.. Comes with vista so its crap but as soon as XP's on it no problems. Core2Duo processor and 2Gig RAM. She paid £450. I then brought a Phillips Freevents 12NB(something) Again 12" but a little better spec (webcam, Better processor, Better DVD writer etc) and paid £495 Both machines are really small and very fast. (with XP)

Hi, I've got 60 laptops that are taking ages to load students roaming profiles over the Wireless network. So I decided that i would change all the students profiles to mandatory. I followed the guide in the WIKI and now my mandatory profile is 2.3MB. I have redirected Application Data, Start Menu and Desktop folders to a location on my server. This has helped dramatically but its still a bit too slow loading all the profiles on the laptops. The 60 laptops are grouped on 4 trolleys with 15 laptops on each trolley. Each trolley has 2 access points which are connected to a 10/100 switch and then connected to the network.. Is there any other way i can speed the logons up ?

I have a Buffalo Terrastation Pro which runs RAID5. I picked up the 0.6 terabyte version for £170. It has 4 x 150gb drives in it and in Raid 5 leaves me with 450GB left to play with. It also has USB ports on the back and i have a 500GB USB hard drive formatted with NTFS that it backs up to every week. I've never had to replace one of the drives in the terastation but i just use the USB drive as a extra failsafe. I also backup to another USB drive every month or so and store it at my mom and dads just incase they either got nicked or the house burnt down. Obsessive i know but my wife would be devistated if we lost the photo's / home movies of our son growing up.. So better safe than sorry

Its 'Not Configured'

Just tried that and it still isnt working. I've taken two screen shots showing the error and the fact that the favorites folder is showing in the Home area. There are favorites in that folder but they do not show up in IE when you view the favorites tab..

anyone have any ideas?

From a ADM template in the GPO for Students
-
I'm having some problems with users adding favorites in IE7. A few days ago I redirected the favorites for students to a folder in their home areas. \\server\%USERNAME%\Favorites Now when I log in as a student and try to add a favorite i get an error saying that the administrator has prevented access... The users have full control over their home areas and the favorites folder so it cant be a problem with the permissions on the share. I also noticed that if i add a favorite manually in the favorites folder that it doesn't show up in the IE7 favorites toolbar... Any ideas? I think it may be a setting in the GPO somewhere but i cant seem to find it.

lol.. Sorry Chris.... I know that your Head(s) seemed quite impressed with them when they were here. I've actually just purchased another 30 laptops.. So we will have 2 mobile classrooms split over 4 trolleys. I currently have 2 AP's ontop of each trolley although i may change this to 3 on each to split the load a little more. The only slow part with the solution is logging on. But to get round that the laptops have all been numbered and each child is going to get the same laptop each week so there will be a local copy of their profile on the machine already and it shouldnt take as long.. Ben

Yes i'd like to be able to have internet favorites and history saved for each user.. How can i redirect those folders after i have the mandatory profile setup
-
ok, So once i have the mandatory profile set up and have tested it thoroughly. How do i tell each user to use that profole. I prsume that in the user account in AD under profile i remove the \\server\Profiles\user and change that to \\server\profiles\manprof assuming that i have named the mandatory profile manprof...
