  1. @minimoo - By any chance were your users were receiving the "Error Creating Windows Handle Win32Exception" error? I have had a good few admin staff complaining of this recently and its happening once or twice a day and coincidentally enough only since coming back in September (SIMS Summer patch installed during Summer and now also on Autumn patch as of yesterday). The machines they are running on are i3's with 4gb ram which is more than plenty for the tasks they do so cannot see how the application is bombing out unless there is a handles leak somewhere. Unfortunately I know F'all when it comes to WinDBG and SIMS support have been no use thus far other than the usual DB maintenance tasks however the DB speed and performance is fine overall and teachers can happily skip in and out of registers etc... between classes without issue.
  2. SOLUTION! So I managed to get everything up and running and moved a test mailbox with UM from on premise to the cloud and was unable to activate UM (voicemail) under the Office 365 Education license. I purchased an Exchange Online Plan 2 license at £0 cost and assigned that to the user as well (had to remove the exchange portion from the assigned Education license) and I could activate UM and voicemail tests fully worked. So for anyone out there wishing to move their exchange to the cloud in the near future and have Lync/Skype for Business on premise be advised you will need to buy a £0 cost Exchange Online Plan 2 license for every UM user and assign that until everything is wrapped up into the 1 Education license. Makes sense really as the Azure Rights Management (ARM) licensing is £0 cost at the moment until they integrate that into the Education license but it would help if they actually documented that on the originally linked article along with the ARM blurb. I have fed back to Microsoft in the hope they will update the article and provide some rough ETA on when features are fully integrated. Andy
  3. if anyone out there is interested, i got a reply back from the Lync Online tech team 3rd line... I can see that you have the Education Plan and from the article shared by you we think that Unified Messaging features will take more time to deliver to our users. Have you tried to check whether you can enable any user for UM online or not? You will find this option under Exchange Admin center è Recipients è Mailbox and right end you will find option to enable user for UM Online. Please check and let me know. So to sum up not even their tech team know if UM voicemail is in the new SKU license for Education yet and want me to try and find out and let them know... Whats the point in having tech support when all they can do is read the same sh*t readily available on the internet and then ask you to test with your live environment. I will setup Hybrid deployment on Exchange this week, migrate a dummy mailbox with UM setup and see if i can get it to work in the cloud once i do the Lync federation too for off premise UM.
  4. Sent this off to the Microsoft Lync Online tech team for an answer but curious if anyone else has noticed this change and have a similar setup:- I have both Exchange 2013 on premise and Lync 2013 on premise. I want to migrate my Exchange 2013 to Office 365 using a Hybrid setup which is easy and then transfer mailboxes over gradually. The issue I have is that I have 50 mailboxes that have UM voicemail with my Lync 2013 server and I need to make sure I can utilise UM voicemail in Office 365. Since September 1st there is a new “Office 365 Education” plan which replaced plans E1, E3 and E4 (see link below). https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Office-365-Education-Frequently-asked-questions-37783f1e-4206-4214-a92b-7d343a42a5d7 According to the article UM voicemail is supported however not straight away, see point 3. under the “Overview of changes” section. I need to ensure when I setup hybrid to migrate my Mailboxes with UM from on premise to office 365 that the ability to utilise UM is there. This is more of a licensing tech question really. I know plans E3 and E4 support UM voicemail and that Exchange Online Plan 2 did as well. When I look at the Office 365 options available to me under purchasing in the office 365 portal I can see an option for “Exchange Online (Plan 2) for Faculty” and also 1 for “students”. My question is “In order to migrate UM voicemail mailboxes from on premise to office 365 under the new Office 365 Education plan do I need to select the Exchange Online (plan 2) license as well for these users in the interim until voicemail is properly packaged into the Office 365 Education plan all as 1 single plan?”. This is what I have been waiting for in terms of licensing as it means I wont have to buy an E3 or E4 plan in order to accommodate UM voicemail so hosting my entire Exchange in Office 365 will be completely free and I can ditch my Exchange server licensing, CAL's, upgrade and patching times, dump the VM that is taking up quite a lot of resource and a finally the long duration to backup. Next step will be to then look at the Enterprise voice options and hopefully get rid of my on premise Lync into the cloud also but need to investigate that more and keep the ability to call to PSTN if I do shift it, provider is already SIP so that bits covered. 5. Cheers for this!, I haven't done my weekly blog reads yet. As for the capture ISO bug I fixed that easily with a workaround as it was due to the Appx package and Appx provisioned package bug and then a week after I figured out a workaround they patch it anyways. Andy
  6. Huh? The group policy custom start menu is a Microsoft Windows 10 group policy that was implemented with the new ADMX files therefore it is supported and advised by Microsoft. You simply build a start menu, run an export command in powershell, chuck the xml output in a share (netlogon being a good example) and then implement the GP with the xml... It's not rocket science... The caviet as said before is that it does not appear to work properly if you check other threads in this forum / do a quick Google and with the copyprofile being broken since Beta is a complete pile of poop. Another class example of Windows 10 not being ready for enterprise. However much I hate Windows 8.1 at least at the moment it works and until Microsoft sort out the configurations bugs and their lack of GP control for Windows 10 in general I won't push out an image. Silly thins as well are annoying like offline servicing not working on Windows 10 in SCCM 2012 R2 SP1 so would have to keep opening the image and injecting updates and closing again...
  7. That would of been me along with my many other questions of regarding the education SKU, LTSB and patching. That Microsoft Education team as they called themselves was a farse! They knew NOTHING other then what was readily available on the Internet to read and since then and the whole 7 days I dedicated to ripping RTM apart and prepping an image ready i have written off and benched as Windows 10 for an education / enterprise perspective is a joke at the moment. The bit where I asked can you upgrade from Enterprise Win 7/8 to education and they all said yes, bollox ! You can't and I've spoken direct with 3 of them and all I got was a "sorry we thought you could". Microsoft Reading are nothing more than consultants with no more access to Windows 10 knowledge then anyone else on the Internet.
  8. The copyprofile in Windows 10 has been broken since early beta and has been reported a lot of times to Microsoft and is awaiting a patch however I wouldn't hold your breathe for anytime soon. There is the Group Policy custom start menu but have yet to play around with it as I put my Windows 10 deployment on hold due to the sysprep remove-appx original issue eating 3 days early on to then get patched a week later buy at that point had already thrown in the towel in favour of updating all app versions. There are a few posts lurking around regarding the Windows 10 custom start menu GP and people having problems so it might not be working properly yet either.
  9. I could kiss you right now! Having spent 2 days troubleshooting the install of Java 8 Update 60 from both a deployment and task sequence perspective I can now happily go home without throwing the PC out the window. Simply installing using the .EXE with switches or the .MSI with a transform was not enough clearly.... Simply xcopying a blank java.settings.cfg file before running the .MSI file with a custom transform was the answer... F'ing hate Java...
  10. Salamander software, speak to a guy called John, they do scripting between SIMS and AD and its legendary stuff, money well spent!
  11. How did you run this command, it doesn't exist? -allusers switch is only good for get- not for remove- Never mind you can pipe it onto a get-appxpackage -allusers | remove-appxpackage but if you run get-appxpackge - allusers and its still there although the apps are remove for the current user. - - - Updated - - - Thats on my test list too. EDIT: Ok so i followed Rob's method for removing all the apps and provisioned apps as I thought it removes such apps as alarms, calculator and even the windows store. The calculator app is pretty crucial as the built in legacy calc application no longer exists and it is app only, also with the new Windows Store volume purchasing coming later down the pipeline losing the store is a big deal.
  12. Hmmm thanks Rob, i will do some more testing this morning. I wanted to remove individual appxpackages as calculator and alarms is quite useful. 1 great example is Bing Finance, try removing that on an individual level for both appxpackage and Appxprovisionedpackage and it doesn't remove properly and FUBARS sysprep. Have you notice at all that even though you have run those commands that if your run a get-Appxprovisionedpackage its still listed as being there and active in a {staged} state. They've really done a number this time [emoji21]
  13. Just had official confirmation from Microsoft, they thought you could upgrade from previous Enterprise version to Education but you can't. Response below:- Hi Andy, So I have managed to reproduce the problem in my Azure lab, I have kicked off a discussion on our internal discussion group, the long and short of it is that the only upgrades that will work currently are: Home/Core or Pro to Education, or Pro to Enterprise (regardless of the version). This isn’t what I thought was the case and clashes with what a lot of us though so will work and try and see if I can clear up our messaging. I’m trying to find out if this is a technical or policy issue but for now I’m afraid it will be a wipe and load. Apologies for the wasted time but thanks for raising it with me! Kind Regards Paul From: IT Support Sent: 04 August 2015 11:02 To: Paul Subject: RE: Windows 10 Education Upgrade from Enterprise Paul, Thanks, should be enough people there then to hopefully recreate the issue pretty quickly. Original installed OS on the machines I’m testing with is Windows 8.1 Enterprise en-us. I’ve attached a screenshot of each of the setup languages on the new 8.1 setups to show they are both en-us for Education or Enterprise edition so language version is not the issue here as the machine I am sending this email from has just in-place upgraded from 8.1 Ent en-us to 10 Ent en-us, retained all the apps and is fully working. Andy From: Paul Sent: 04 August 2015 18:52 To: IT Support Subject: RE: Windows 10 Education Upgrade from Enterprise Hi Andy, Thanks, just threw it out to a room of 60 Win 10 deployment people and its meant to work! Can you check the original media languages on all disks ( You can’t upgrade en-us with en-gb media). I’ll see if I can lab this up later and I’ve also pinged the course leader to see where this might be going wrong. Paul
  14. Rob how exactly did you manage to get the image to sysprep and capture after remove both appxpackages and appxprovisionedpackages? I've spent a good 2 days now trying to remove individual appxpackages and appxprovisioned packages which works great however I can never get sysprep to work as I end up with the annoying "app is installed for a user, but not provisioned for all users" and cant get round it. The process I am using is as follows:- 1. standard iso image to vm 2. setup the mandatory user account through the oobe 3. run get-appxprovisionedpackage -online 4. run remove-appxprovisionedpackage -online -packagename Bing...bla bla bla 5. run get-appxpackage *bing* -AllUsers | remove-appxpackage 6. run and get on both appxpackage and appxprovisionedpackage to ensure its missing from both lists 7. run sysprep to test and get error in log regarding user having app installed but not provisioned for all Now I have no other users on the system other than the default oobe one I had to create and I've even tried it the other way round by doing steps 3,4 and 5,6 the other way round so i remove the appxpackage first and then the provisioned package and still no joy. Short of giving up and just using a standard WIM with a PS script after the OS install in a task sequence I'm trying to fathom out if this is actually working or not pre-sysprep. Andy
  15. Exact same test I'm doing now, I guarantee that remove-provisionedappxpackagrs stops new users from getting the apps, it's more the question of will it sysprep after that as it hasn't previously but doing it in specific order.
  16. I'm going for 1 final test now:- ISO build remove-appxpackage ..... remove-appxpackage -allusers ..... remove-provisionedappxpackge ..... capture image If this doesn't work then i'm just going to use standard ISO, add apps and tweaks, capture media and then run a powershell script in my task sequence with the remove-provisionedappxpackage.
  17. I did that in Windows 8 but then the Start Menu just looks pants, I managed to do it in 8.1 and remove everything but for the life of me cant remember how as that was a year ago, i blame alcohol... and teachers...
  18. Your going to have issues then, Remove-AppxPackage only works for current profile your logged on as and if you add the -AllUsers switch (Remove-AppxPackage -AllUsers ...) then it will do all current users on the machine, newly created profiles will still get all the apps. If you want to stop new profiles from getting the apps you need to use Remove-ProvisionedAppxPackage Welcome to my world of hurt now! EDIT - Here's some info: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh856038.aspx & https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh824882.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396
  19. I went through the licensing options for business and then the volume license issue, you end up speaking with someone in India, tell them you need to speak with a volume license support person and they put you through to them.
  20. What issue you got? I have called them for 3 different schools now and simply said "I want Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise and Education with both KMS and MAK keys + The windows 2012 R2 Server Windows 10 KMS Host Key" and they've done it over the phone in 3 minutes. Andy
  21. I ran through the process of:- Install ISO Activate administrator Restart and delete all other user accounts Remove all app via powershell remove-provisionedappxpackage Change bcdedit Remove all active apps via powershell with remove-appxpackage -all users Install a office, serif, photoshop Windows Update Run capture image ISO fro SCCM and fail on sysprep EDIT: Having just read through that Technet article again they are saying you have to remove-appxpackage from the default users first and then remove-provisionedappxpackage ? If you simple delete the default user installed then it doesn't work...
  22. 0800 9179016 - Call this number now if you want to speak to someone in English, cheeky buggers have swapped round menu's on the previous posted number and you now end up in India (no offense but we all love an Indian call center...)
  23. Right well good news... NOT... I've managed to captures image without removing provisioned appxpackages absolutely fine but when you remove them and capture it does not work and sysprep fails... feck feck feck feck feck grrrrr EDIT:- Ok time for plan B or C, either deploy standard ISO/WIM and then run a powershell script to remove provisionedappxpackages with the -online switch after the build has deployed or mount the WIM offline and try that way. Getting sick of rebuilding 10 over and over already...
  24. Waiting for Serif suite to install in the image and then will sysprep it with the SCCM capture media, 20 mins tops now hopefully then I will let you know if it worked. I usually just deploy Serif suite as a package but the sheer amount of files to copy means its an hour long copy/install which is a joke so I want a faster build time.
  25. I had this issue yesterday after 2 days off removing provisioned appx packages from images. I'm about to sysprep with a SCCM capture image my final build which if my theory is right should hopefully work, will report results within the hour
