Hi All, I am trying to configure my system so it remembers a users screen resolution when they log in. I don't particularly want students to have roaming profiles because they will end up with a million and one files on the desktop making it harder for us to see what they are saving. I simply want when they log into a machine that it sets it to whatever screen resolution they have set previously. then when they log off I can use group policy to set it back to default. Any Ideas?

Can you get Nova T without SIMs?
-
Hi All, I am used to SIMS but have moved to a school with Integris. Does anyone know how to set up timetabling. In SIMs we had Nova T is there a similar software?

Whats the cost involved? (I could Google this yes. But I want a record of the post in area so I can come back to it when junior librarian eventually falls over when I move to 7 in the summer)

Were moving to Server 2012 soon too IE has been a nightmare for a while. Chrome have released a GPO package, food for thought.

Backup Assist is used by NASA! The reason I have always used software such as this is because of using it on tape drives, copy protect etc. As its going onto a NAS drive there should be no worries just simply merge files every night then delete the lot every 6 months or so and start again to make sure you don't have old data. This is good for data recovery shared drives and the like. Backup Assist says its a disaster recovery solution. What does this equate to? Can I recover my servers from it if they go mental? I could just take an Image of my server in Fog every now and again. Whats your thoughts?

I only found it on Google this morning.

Firstly I don't know if this is the correct area of the forum. I'm sure an admin will put this right. I have taken over an IT department with a number of old systems running. One of which is Veritas backup 9.1. This has been running fine until recently and errors have started cropping up. It backs up to a NAS drive on the other end of the building. So geographically its safe from fire in that its in a different building to the server room. I want to update the way in which we back up because Veritas 9.1 is becoming too hard to fix all the errors cropping up. I wish to know what solutions others have implemented and have had success with. We have no tape drive and everything gets backed up to a NAS drive. I have considered a few options;- * Update to Veritas backup exec 2012 (to run to NAS (about £250 ish) * Cloud backups such as myschoolbackup.co.uk (unlimited data and server backup for £399 per yr) * Scheduled task backup to copy to NAS drive Pros and Cons for each;- Veritas is a one off cost (for the next few years at least) and it will compress Data Cloud backup is the most secure and is backed up in loads of locations Scheduled task backup is free as we already have the infrastructure but it just copies one for one and I would imagine is more time consuming Any ideas people? Cheers, Ben

I just used LogMeIn to log into home and install Teamviewer.

Update- (because I forgot before christmas) it seems to be an issue with the joomla extension. Rectified it by just using word documents. Not ideal but it works. If I discover another way I will add it to the how you do it section. cheers for the help all.

Green source solutions are good. They are suppliers of nearly everything and you can send them anything for recycling the pay for and arrange pick-up.

The only way I can see to run without is to completely lock everything down(via GPO, no USBs etc). Only allow a certain list of sites, have antivirus on the server where docs etc are stored. And have all emails, MIS etc hosted on a 3rd party. And to have all machines wipe any changes when rebooted. The problem with this is its unmanageable and would take away the experience of actually using a computer. I know it has been done with certain systems like low level military networks. but this means you can only access content that is set by admins.

We have antivirus. And will be keeping antivirus. Its not a question of funding. Its a hypothetical question is it possible to create a system witbout. For example you can build a machine with software to wipe the hdd everytime it is rebooted. This would wipe any changes or viruses installed. But this would not protect against everything. The second thing ive been thinking about is nowadays there are many free products for everything apart from, it appears, enterprise anti virus.
-
Point to note. No mis or accounts hosted internally or any emails etc. However as an excerise i dont think it is possible unless anyone knows a decent reputable and free enterprise anti virus.

Currently we have nothing I am pushing for Microsoft OVS-ES, Secondly being a patronising helps no one. Please don't bother to post again. Most antivirus software will not protect from most attacks. If I were to create a virus I would make it to defeat sofos, mcafee etc.

Best piece of advice. Most likely the motherboard has fried. Check the keyboard failing that look in it check to see if there is a power supply. Some laptops go though the battery etc but some go directly into the motherboard (Then charge the battery after(sorry if this is an egg sucking lesson)). If the power cable goes directly onto the motherboard and it doesn't fire up past a bit of fan spinning then it can only be a few things;- A Goosed power button/keyboard that is sending the wrong signals(usually some sort of pushed in button) A Goosed Processor (beyond unlikely and usually you would get a little more before it dies beeps or something but not a definate) A Goosed motherboard RAM, wireless, other random stuff plugged into a motherboard would give you some form of beep if that were faulty(in theory. but hey, I still find myself liking memory when I get 3 post beeps so who knows)

General thoughts please people. Prelims - Small school 130 students, 120 staff, 130 Machines 3 servers (and a fog server that wipes computers every holiday period.) Anti Virus, Currently on sofos endpoint security all machines also have Microsoft security essentials on. Internet firewall is managed by SmoothWall. USBs and Disk media are allowed. Problem/Idea/Thoughts - I am kinda of the opinion that antivirus is an unnecessary expense. The system is locked down with group policy so only certain programs can run. I am fully aware that viruses could come through with Java, ActiveX etc and not require admin permissions to do what they do. I know there is a risk can the risk be mitigated without paying large fees? What does everyone else use, do. Anyone already do this? Anyone thought of this before. I need some advice for the risk assessment. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Ben

The location is accessible the file permissions are right. Updated Reader Tried it in IE, chrome and fire fox A file that was accessible is now no longer accessible. Really confused.. Policies Anyone fancy having a look. its pointing to the right location.

Update: The user can drop files in the folder and they appear through the website but you click on them and you get a 500 internal error. Any ideas? checked permissions on the file all groups like IUSRS etc are correct.

worked like a treat. thank you @Boredguy

Sounds like a plan, I'll give it a go and check back in.

Got it set up. Looks good tried a few documents in it and that's working. One issue I have is I cant access the folder on the server from a non administrator user. What I have done so far is;- ---- to add a security group to the folder in windows. ---- the user can now navigate to the folder and make changes etc. i.e. they run \\servername\drive$\ this gives them access. They can now click each folder and work their way down to \\servername\drive$\site\joomla_32\Documents\Policies ---- the user can not just run \\servername\drive$\site\joomla_32\Documents\Policies and go direct to the folder it says it doesn't exist. (this is obviously some IIS security thing) ---- I want to have a link on our intranet so they can just open the folder and drop stuff in. or put a short cut on their desktops. Anyway around this?

Can I see this on your site? Also, read the description its not clear to me whether you can just drop stuff in a folder and it will show? cheers, Ben
