  2. Hi Jonas this can be accomplished using GAM. A bit of a pain to set up but once working its quite simple: https://github.com/jay0lee/GAM https://github.com/jay0lee/GAM/wiki Once it's up and running you can use the information here to build the command: https://github.com/jay0lee/GAM/wiki/ExamplesEmailSettings#managing-user-email https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7190?hl=en
  3. Not sure it is getting better either: Job cuts, falling sales and now a mega pension deficit at RM ? The Register :/
  4. Another thing I have noticed is the often vast difference between salaries offered. IT Technician? Anywhere between £14,000 and £26,000 per annum. Network Manager? £23,000 to £45,000... Sometimes the expectations, size of School and job descriptions are significantly different, but at other times it seems Schools just pluck a figure out of the air. Bizarre.
  5. I think this may be a valid point. We are currently advertising for a "Systems Admin" which is quite uncommon in Schools believe - someone in the 30-35k bracket but without management responsibilities.
  6. Hello all, I have been monitoring the jobs forum on edugeek for a number of years, and it seems to me that recently (the last 12 months) the number of adverts has gone through the roof. In particular adverts for data managers, medium sized school network managers and standard technicians. Is that what other people are seeing? Also, from my own experiences of recruiting to these positions there seems to be a huge shortage of quality applicants. Those that we do get are 90% of the time through an agency.* So what's causing this? Do people not want to work in a School? Is it the pay (an obvious answer, but i'm not convinced)? Is there just a general shortage of IT technicians, not just in education? Maybe Schools are too insular and try too hard to hire people who have already worked in Schools, when they should be looking to industry more? I am really interested to see what other people think. * maybe people just don't want to work with me
  7. I second this, I would love to be able to suggest a solid but affordable online application form. Google Docs doesn't seem to be the answer as you can't save your progress as you go. (I know you can submit and then edit later, but that isn't quite what we need)
  8. Hello, Just wanted to double check something. Our OVS is due to expire on 31st December. We have of course gone to get quotes from multiple suppliers etc, and selected the cheapest. However the reseller tells me we cant place an order, renew etc until after 31st December... Is this correct? Do we not need to sign documents etc in advance? I'm just concerned we will find ourselves in trouble if we appear to let the OVS expire before signing a new deal Thanks!
  9. Junior IT Technician | Cheney School Any questions, feel free to PM or e-mail (e-mail address is found on the advert...)
  10. As the former network manager there, I can confirm it is a super place to work! I think they have had some problems filling the role, but whoever does get it will be going to a really good job.
  11. IT Systems Administrator | Cheney School Any questions feel free to PM me or email (email is found on the linked page)
  12. Ah i see. And would one of those be able to take the odd basketball hit?
  13. Can you send me a link to whatever that is ^^
  14. Hello all, We wish to put an AP into our sports hall. The official enclosure for our access point model is ~£500 which seems like a lot of money. Do you think it would be better sense to go for something like this: STI 9601 - 210x70mm Vandal Cage for Smoke, Fire and CO Detectors What do you guys do? Zammo

  16. Hi all Looking to do some re-wiring in the server room and therefore purchase some new CAT6 patch cables in various lengths Can anyone recommend a particularly good place to get quality cable from? The last batch I got from amazon was not well made, probably okay for workstations but not at the core of our network. Thanks
  17. Merci beaucoup!
  18. Not quite decided yet, but they are definite favorites We are going looking at going with the cloud solution
  19. No worries We have looked at Meraki, Meru, Aruba and Ruckus in various levels of detail. Meraki offer a lot in terms of features but the costs were a little too high.
  20. Yes, clearly. I should add they also gave a very good demo, seem to have the features we want etc.
  21. Thanks for the feedback. Pricing wise they have come up cheapest for us so who knows...?
  22. Hello all, We have been obtaining quotes and demonstrations for a new wireless system and have been impressed with the pricing and features of Xirrus. Can anyone feedback on their experiences with them? I would be very grateful for any comments (good or bad!)

    GBICs?

Hello all, We are looking to buy some replacement fibre modules as a few of our have failed over the last few months We are looking for replacements for the model shown here: I know nothing about how GBICs work. This one is obviously manufactured by Extreme themselves (we have Extreme switches) but can I get cheaper clones? If so what do I need to check to make sure they are compatible? Thanks!
  24. Our LEA switched from AtomWide to Updata a few years back. Service hasn't been great and a number of Schools have felt obliged to source their internet and services elsewhere.
  25. Hi all We have had a few requests to unblock very specific pages on facebook, i.e https://www.facebook.com/DofESouthEast. I tried adding it as a whitelisted URL, but pictures etc do not load. I don't want to allow through anything that can then be used to access facebook content in other ways. Basically I want to say "This URL and content it calls is fine" Can this be done on a smoothwall UTM? We have facebook blocked for all standard staff and teachers using the built in facebook category Thanks Martin
