I am trying to free up some space on a Windows 2008 R2 server, to do this I need to access all user directories, I can access most user directories but when I try to access some of them I get the error message, "You don't currently have permission to access this folder. Click continue to permanently get access to this folder.". I am logged on as an administrator on the server. This tends to happen on the occasional My Pictures file, but sometimes also occurs on the entire users directory. Because of this the data used by a user is not being reported correctly as it is missing the restricted folders off the directory size calculations. Firstly why is this happening? Is there a way to bulk assign rights without affecting the users access rights? I can go into the individual users directory and change the ownership one at a time but this will just take far too long and I am worried that the user will no longer have rights once I change the ownership. Any help will be gratefully appreciated, thanks.

Thanks for all the help, managed to solve this. Turns out (as Randidiot eluded to) there was a problem with the desktop redirection folder, even after I made it accessible by everyone I still had problems. I had to create the structure from scratch and use the same access rights and it seems to be working.

Thanks for the replies, I have tried all the suggestions and am still getting the fault. All I can think of is that it may be down to one of the errors appearing in the event log, the second event could be the reason I am having problems with the desktop. This is a Student logon, so it is heavily locked down. They can mostly access their folders manually, but not always. I can ping the server. Running gpresult and nslookup returns expected results. I have a problem when some users are logging onto our domain via a Windows 7 PC. Sometimes the computer doesn’t logon correctly and all the admin icons are displayed, other times the desktop only shows 4 icons rather than the approximately 10 icons that should be there, this often coincides with not being able to see their home folder, but not always (The home folder is set within AD via the Home Folder setting). However they are always able to see our common drive which is accessible by all staff. This is setup via a group policy. Admin accounts are not affected by the problem. So far I have used DelProf2 to remove local profiles, re-created accounts in AD, modified access rights for home folders and changed GP to always wait for network connection. For testing purposes I am only locking the PC down via GP and not using mandatory profiles. We are running Windows 2008 R2. This problem is not unique to just one area of the school and can occur on any Windows 7 device, some users seem to be affected more than others. I am going round in circles here and would appreciate some guidance, there just doesn’t seem to be any pattern to the problems.

I've had this problem for several weeks now, anyone found a solution? I am running on Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 7 64bit Pcs. This doesn't happen on all users.

I have been struggling with with a logon problem for several days, basically after 2 successful logons the 3rd one fails and does not connect to the server, also all the icons are missing. I am now in the process of trying to logon after a reboot to see if I have the same pattern. I am running Windows 2008 R2 SP1 with Windows 7 64bit clients. I have loaded all the updates on the server. I have tried enabling "Always wait for the network at computer startup and login" in group policy for the staff policy but this has not worked. When this happens I am not convinced that the policy is actually being applied. This is driving me mad, so any help would really be appreciated.

I'm thinking of purchasing either Norton Ghost Sol Suite 2.5 or Acronis Snap Deploy 4.0, but I am unsure which to go for. Does anyone have any experience of using either? Are there any benefits of one over the other? I have used Norton Ghost 7.0 before and that ran pretty well but I did find it a little rigid with different image files needed for different NICs. Have things moved on?

Hi I am just starting to load and setup programs users. I have two profiles, staff and student and both have access to most of the same programs. The problem I have, which I'm sure is not unique, is that I have a mixture of 32-bit and 64-bit computers. Currently I enable/disable visible programs shortcuts depending on whether the user is a student or staff member, but the problem is that Windows 7 64-bit stores the programs in a different place to Windows XP. Do I have to have seperate shortcuts for 32-bit and 64-bit versions but only one set will work or is there a better way?
