Sounds like the same problem seen in RM-land - their quick workaround for XP is to use the "Add Network Place Wizard" (using the relevant URL) and play with the files there.

That they've now been written more for the audience rather than cut&pasted out of nasty CESG/whatever docs with all those orders (MUST do blah). Have only skimmed, but they're more accessible and much less silly now. Still there a bit, but it's interesting to see the de-emphasis of the categorisation stuff. Is it fair to assume that's more or less what they think entry-level remote auth. security ought to be i.e. staff access needs more?

Event log is easier, but eek! Do people really manage to sell these things? If you want a free util there's the brilliant "arpscan" attached to a post in the download forum [Wrote that something like 8-9 years ago - update it every year or so with new vendor assignments]

IP address conflicts create TCPIP 4199 events in the event log and those contain the MAC address of the offending device (you can lookup the first few octets in the OUI to find the manufacturer). May or may not help you find the device, but this is *the* place to start.

I got a serious violence case one week, and for the next week a paedophile case with plot twists and drama you definitely wouldn't believe. Everyone found the latter a bit umm.. traumatic. Still not all experiences worth having are necessarily enjoyable and I'm glad I didn't wriggle out of that.

I'm reminded of the Orwellian ContactPoint DB - something like 400,000 people qualify to access that, so you may as well give up and make it public. What's the "business case" for the proposal in this thread? Considering how many people would qualify, what would it actually achieve?

Once upon a time, which wasn't all that long ago, you didn't have "tags" or charges for any of this. Consequently it took me cumulative days of increasingly irritating faffing about with Nominet to get them to change the NS records for a co.uk domain, and of course to do that without sending me a bill. Despite the above comment about Nominet holding unassigned tags, no one, but no one, in that organisation appeared to have the capacity to cope with the idea that *.uk domains that preceded Nominet's existence would not have tag holders - I wasn't an ISP and they couldn't cope. I'm still a bit gob-smacked by this rather special UK arrangement that insists an ISP "holds" the "tag" rather than the organisation.

Absolutely, although a judgement based on a relatively old and non-available product is arguably too generous. Behind the RM console, CC3 is just another Windows config albeit a seriously developed one, the extra RM code is mostly stable, and if you know enough Windows you can work with the system - it's fine. CC4 has ridiculous overheads (450MB RAM to manage an OS that gets by with 125MB!) and with or without the bugs it is much more proprietory. Some of the routinely ignorant mud I've seen thrown at CC3 would stick to CC4.

True, although bear in mind that part of Hyper-Vs missing 20% is because it doesn't do "live migration". Your HA VM from the expired physical server is *started* on another member of the failover cluster i.e. it doesn't carry on in whatever state it happened to be in a little while ago. Not a major issue for me for failover, but for maintenance etc. I'd definitely like to be able to move a VM to another physical host without any particularly appreciable downtime.

I would seriously think about postponing that until Hyper-V Server 2008 *R2* hits the streets - it's supposed to address the features that got it an 80% score (versus VMWare's 100%) in the recent Burton Group report on virtualisation platforms.

Late last year I tested a 'clean' vanilla domain XP against a 'clean' CC4 XP with identical VM hardware (512MB RAM) on a very speedy host machine with a very speedy connection to the server when there wasn't any significant contention for server attention. Everything was as fair and objective as I could make it. Vanilla/CC4 PF usage was 125/560MB and CC4 took three times longer to boot & logon and get to a usable desktop. In other words I got very similar results.

It depends but a Cat6A link can be a good idea when connecting a new cabinet.

Perhaps their should be a poll on this, but unless you've got helpers I don't think a (6 week) summer hol is enough to start from scratch and have a good, solid 2K8 based system ready for roll-out. Trouble is that depends on agreeing a definition of "good, solid". Are we allowed Vanilla vs. Vanilla debates? PS: Or debates about why people reckon a 3rd party all-the-bits-off-the-shelf "vanilla" Windows is significantly different from a CC3? I have a few problems spotting the difference. [With CC4 that's much easier]. What is "plain Windows", do you have to make it all yourself and how much 3rd party s/w are you allowed to have in what context?

Use NAT (ISA) permanently and keep your existing IP range.

Never touched one but Equilogic sounds like an easy (to manage) choice.

I've used 2K8 preferences to make a new mail handler and then set that as the default to replace Outlook, worked in the end but it was a pain to do. [Don't have the info to hand sorry, but it's definitely doable]

If the server where a user's profile and documents live is down, then telling you it can't access that user's profile and documents sounds very reasonable to me. [For a school the logoff in those circumstance is OK too]

I don't think you can get CC3 now. They're less likely to show up so often on a small system, but CC4 has the same bugs whether it's an upgrade or new install, The show-stopper may well be the realistic hardware specification you need for decent performance on CC4 system PCs/Laptops - if they're good enough to run Vista well they will be as good as it gets - something like a three year old box with 512MB RAM is the absolute minimum.
