I have a Microserver. N54L, came to about £90 after the cashback. I installed a bay converter in the optical slot, so that it holds a regular 3.5" and a 2.5" drive. It's running Ubuntu server, with ZFS-on-Linux taking care of the storage role. Five 3.5" drives in RAID-Z and the 2.5" drive as the system drive. Performance is great, with it handling Plex transcoding like a champ. Combined with a Chromecast, it's flippin' awesome. The only issue I've ever had with it was upgrading zfs. I'd forgotten to do a dist-upgrade afterwards and couldn't load the storage pool. Slight panic for a moment, there...

Afan's a ten minute drive from me, and Glyncorrwg about the same. Both fantastic places for throwing yourself down the trails. A few things: - Try the RPi again, but install the latest OpenElec beta with XBMC Gotham. See if that picks up DVBViewer. - See if there's an alternative backend? There are plugins that let you use Windows Media Centre as a backend nowadays. If you're willing to use Linux, check out TVHeadend. I don't know if it's possible to install in a virtual machine and have the DVB card run in passthrough, though. - AMD's AM1 platform is going to appear shortly. That's a motherboard and user-replaceable CPU for very cheap (the Sempron model will be about £30...). They're meant to be released in early April.

Download the gems manually and install them with 'gem install', specifying the path. I never had any luck trying to get it working behind a proxy.

I modded it with custom firmware. So it's doing.... not much more than connecting me to the internet. But I have plans! Let me try and work out what we have: 6 computers/workstations being used for various functions. 5 laptops, including a netbook 2 nexus 7 tablets, one a 2013 model 2 android phones 1 raspberry pi as my xbmc machine 1 panasonic network streamer/netflix box 4 games consoles, wii,360,2*DS 2 servers, one a HP microserver, the other a Dlink NSLU2 1 printer 2 routers with custom firmware, though only one is currently in use 1 ipod touch 27 total, unless I'm forgetting something.

Errm, quite a bit. It's at least 23 if you include the router.

I'm paid a 9-5 (or 8-4) job. I've been stung too many times to have work eat into my personal time. If something breaks when you're not there, it has to wait until you get in to fix it. If management aren't happy then it's them who'll have to decide if they want you to be on-call and pay you accordingly.

I think Three are really the best network right now. DC-HSDPA is nearly as fast as 4G, and most phones released in the last year support it. I'm on the verge of leaving Giffgaff as O2's network is too hit-and-miss where I live.

We don't have a sync cart. I've asked for one, but they're too expensive. Apparently it's more cost effective for me to do everything one device at a time.

I personally don't think touchscreens are going to take off until there some kind of tactile way to let people know what you're interacting with. Unless you're on a mobile device (and not even then, really), touchscreens are a terrible way of interacting with a game when your focus is not on the control surface.

Currently we have fifteen iPads that I've been lumbered with managing, on top of my existing duties (but that's another discussion...). How do you do it? I'm looking for any and all advice in how to effectively manage things; from installing apps to backup/restore settings to the best way to loan them out to staff. Thanks in advance.

Performance was never an issue. You can still have great games without needing to pump out a quadrillion gigatexels per picosecond. The issue that Nintendo have, IMO, is about branding. A huge number of sales for the original Wii came from so-called casual gamers who bought the console for Wii Fit etc. Why would people need to spend another £200 on a machine when the first one does the same job? They should have renamed the console completely, and tried going down another avenue. In the end, the 360/PS3 was purchased for blockbuster games, driven mainly by the 18-30 crowd who want the latest and greatest to play on Live/PSN against their friends. The Wii (and U) never had those kinds of games, and the games that they do have aren't reliant on graphics to enjoy. The hardcore Nintendo loyalists aren't purchasing it because it's lacking the usual killer first-party titles like a new Zelda. To the masses, the Wii U is another Wii but with a tablet thingy.

I have the newly released N54L, and purchased another 8GB chip (1333MHz, £35 in PC World :-) ). Currently it's running OmniOS with Napp-IT. I did play about with the BSD implementations of ZFS, as well as ZFS on Linux, but speed and stability are enough to justify running a mutant child of Solaris. The next step is running a Debian variant on there (probably Ubuntu server) and running OmniOS in KVM. Assuming whether or not I can find out if PCIe passthrough is supported on this version...

Since moving to nettops, we haven't had a dust issue. Before that, vacuum cleaners were the way to go combined with aerosol sprays for the heatsinks.

Until I can get vanilla android on there with the Play Store, I'm going to leave it. Especially as HDMI-CEC has yet to be baked in as promised.

Is that the US address, though? I have to say, I'm pretty intrigued. I think I could make a case that we get a few here just to 'trial'.
