We've recently purchased a batch of HP Laserjet P2055DN printers and they all seem to be sufferering from the same issue. After being left on for a seemingly random amount of time their state goes to offline? When in this state they wont respond on the network at all and you can't even ping them The traditional IT Crowd fix of 'turning it off and on again' seem to be the only way to kick them back into life. No other models of printer have been affected by this AFAIK. The previous laserjet P2015N's we've bought used to this this aswell but generally only once every 2-3 months so it wasnt really a problem but the P2055's seem to be doing it a couple of times a day We're on the latest version of the firmware so I'm just away to raise a support call with HP regarding the fault. We've got a spare one in our office which Im away to setup and leave sitting on the network so we can track down whether it's a print job/ queue / driver issue or a hardware/network problem. Has anyone else had any similar problems with this model? Possible Fix found: see this post for more info

Personally I've tried a couple of Blackberry models and thought both of them were pretty poor. Especially loathed that stupid trackball thing which is no match for a proper touch screen. The interface is hideously unintiutive and all the ones I've seen have brick-like form factors. They look and feel like smartphones from 5 years ago IMO. The full qwerty keyboard is handy for email but you lose so much screen space as a result of having it (which ruins web browsing and video playback) that it would be better to have an onscreen keyboard or a slide-out one like on the HTC Tytn models/etc. Personally I'd go with an iphone or windows mobile device.

We're looking to purchase 2 of these for our existing blade server chassis. As they've been superceded by a newer model Dell no longer appear to sell them directly. Can any suppliers on here source them for us? TIA

I've seen his happen where the board's not fitted to a flat wall straight on in front of the projector. Could that be the problem?

QTF +1. We've bought several of these and despite being cheap as chips they work better than anything else we've ever had. USB Powered aswell which makes cabling them much easier and stops pupils unplugging them by accident! In fact they're so good/cheap that I'm tempted to buy one for home even though I rarely use a scanner

That's probably your best bet. My experience has been the more you spend on a DVD player the fussier it is about what kind of discs it will play!

Just as an aside have you tried running a virus scan on the server? A lot of them muck around with network/firewall settings these days.

Agreed failover/redundancy is probably the main reason for virtualising servers IMO. Means you no longer tied to physical hardware in the event of a fault. Another benefit of this is that it makes service packs and other major upgrades a far less stressful task. Mainly because you can take a snapshot of the server image pre-update, apply the patch and if it goes horribly wrong for any reason you just re-mount the old image before you tried the update! If you did the above with a locally installed OS on a server you'd probably end up spending a whole day trying to recover from backup!

Take a journey to the 'dark side' and buy an iphone. Best mobile I've ever owned by far! Meets all your criteria apart from the fact the camera on it is a bit rubbish! There's supposed to be a new model out in another month or two and I reckon there's probably a good chance this will have an improved camera.

I think if that's the case technically you'd need to buy MS windows licence for those machines before you can install an OS upgrade under the schools agreement. TBH the whole thing just seems like a slightly underhand way of allowing resellers like DELL and HP to continue selling OEM licences with new PCs they distribute Mind you at least the MS schools agreement gives you the flexibility to upgrade versions of windows/server/office whenever you want rather than only being able to do it when the money's available so I still reckon the schools agreement is the best way to go overall.

QFT +1 . just buy some PCI USB cards with an internal connector. That's what we did. We hate cubase and are planning to move away from it if possible primarily because of the pain that these @#**#@ hardware dongles cause. It makes upgrades a nightmare aswell because we currently have 20 copies of the software running Cubase SX 2.0. We want to add another 10 PCs to our lab but can't just buy more copies of version 2.0 because there's no gaurauntue that the hardware dongles provided with the latest version will work with an older one We hit this problem everytime we add new PCs to the music department

None of our staff ever recieved any either AFAIK It was bad enough teachers but from a legal/moral point of view isn't it slightly dubious collecting personal details of school pupils so that they can be enetered into a third-party database for advertising/etc?

IIRC it should just work on Windows XP as long as your running service pack 2 or higher with the relevant group policy setup?

Do you have a link to the document where this is written? When you say retaining all pupil data does it purely refer to coursework/material that's submitted for examination or are there wider reaching implications?

They were actually the other pair I'd considered. Do they work OK as a hands-free kit aswell with the iphone?

I'm looking for a set of wired earphones for my iphone 3g with a microphone so I can also use it as a hand-free kit. I've contemplated the apple ones but they're getting mixed reviews, aren't 100% compatible with the iphone and are pretty expensive. Apple In-Ear Headphones with Remote and Mic - Apple Store (U.K.) Any other recommendations? TIA

If granting local admin rights doesn't fix the error it's extremely unlikely it's a file permission issue.

Could you perhaps install the app on a networked drive and check to see if it will run OK from there? AFAIK if that fails your only option is to grant specific user/accounts access to view the C: drive or contact the manufactures to see if there's an updated version of the software that fixes the problem?

I guess you could buy a shelf/tray for the cabinet (one that secures on all 4 corneres in the cabinet to take the weight) and sit the server/UPS on top of it?

10Gb would certianly provide enough bandwidth (and probably near enough backplane speeds anyway) but when HP say "stack" is it actually a resilient stack or is it just a daisy-chain networked "virtual stack" unit for management?

We're about to order one of the Avermedia ones for testing. Can it transfer video it's recorded accross to the PC aswell as pictures? If so what format/resolution do the recorded video files come across in?

Seems kind of odd that HP don't have any kind of stacking methodology like 3com/netgear to improve performance and add resiliency? Appears that you want the above you're forced to run a dedicated fibre (potentially a pair for resiliency) to each individual switch or go with a modular solution? Unless there's some kind of cunning way of "cross-wiring" the HP switches using link aggregation/spanning tree that I've not thought of

Cheers for the info. Just been checking HP's site and like you say the HP 'stacking' appears to be purely there for ease of management rather than performance/resiliency. On 3com's you have 2 gigabit ethernet ports on the front of each switch that you can enable as 'XRN ports'. You then daisy chain each switch together using these ports and plug the right port of the last switch in the the stack into the left port of the first switch to form a looped network. This then presents the stack as a single unit and all of the comms between switches is passed around this loop to improve the bandwidth and allow for resiliency if an individual switch in the stack fails.
