  1. What is the software you want them to run? There may be alternative workarounds if someone else has come across it. I certainly wouldn't recommended letting any students run anything as an administrator.
  2. I've inherited a network that has all the defaults set to disabled for a password policy. Recently the management has decided that they want to enforce such policies, however they want to determine when it is changed; most likely the first week of each new term. My question is, can I set the complexity requirements, the length of password, old password retainment etc.. but force a manual password reset by just selecting all staff members in AD and checking the 'User must change password at next logon' when required? If there's another way around it then please do suggest.
  3. Ah, so it does work wired on the laptops? Have you checked the event viewer to see if there are any errors applying GPs? Years ago, with some old netbooks, I had a problem with a certain group policy not applying on the wireless and it was as if the network card wasn't booting in time to process the policies so I enabled the 'Wait for Network' option before anyone could login. Found under Administrative Templates\System\Logon. It's worth a shot.
  4. It may be a good idea temporarily. I had the same problem. Then I'd look at moving your proxy settings etc.. over to GPP. It's a lot slicker to use, or I find it is. If you need any pointers then let me know.
  5. Have you got a Windows 8 machine that you can run the RSAT for Windows 8 on? You could then manage your GPOs on that machine until you get a Windows 2012 Server.
  6. Hi, How are you setting your homepage and proxy settings? Certainly when IEM was no longer supported in IE10 it through me off until we worked out what it was!
  7. I was told no re-branding, a product they just aren't happy with and it's going.
  8. Has anyone else heard that the OPENHIVE services are being deflated? We use their email and VLE - unsure what plans are in place to migrate us away, if any at all. Not sure how long they will give all schools to migrate away. We've been looking to move away recently due to the lack of support and frustrations with the platform so it hasn't really caught us off guard. Good news for Frog, My Big Campus, Firefly, Moodle etc.. though. Sure there will be plenty of schools up for grabs now.
  9. Yes, that's the one. It's a bit of a mind boggler to begin with!
  10. Has anyone tried the official SIMS bulk update utility for email addresses and phone numbers?
  11. We had a similar problem with another games URL, we ended up just blocking sites.google.com for students.
  12. Hi, As a school we're looking into moving away from our current VLE - SharePoint. We want to start hosting certain services on our own website, but this will require users to login. The simplest method would be to use Active Directory I feel. Our website is currently hosted on a VPS with our provider, so a link directly to our AD already has become a struggle with the website not being hosted internally. I thought maybe we could use something like Windows Azure AD services in the hope we could link our website into AD that way. I'm not sure how possible that is either. Another alternative is to extract users from AD and import this info into some form of database, the only downside being the users would need to create new passwords because I'm fairly sure any form of export from AD wouldn't carry credentials. To be honest, I'm looking for suggestions, or if anyone else has done a similar sort of thing. Thanks
  13. Hi, We currently have our email hosted by Capita, both student and staff though using two different domain. Students use Office 365 and staff are using Capita's Exchange services. We're looking at possible avenues away from this in the future. I'm trying to differentiate what a user (staff member) would gain from going from an Exchange account to an Office 365 account. I'm finding it hard to find a reason to stay on a hosted Exchange platform when with Office 365 you get the storage, Lync, SharePoint, Office Apps dependant on your subscription. What are your thoughts on moving from Exchange to Office 365 for the people that have done it? Any lost functionality, or mainly just gains?
  14. Hi guys, Looking into the possibility of installing HDMI to our projector over cat5e. I've looked into a few solutions, some use one cat5e cable, then some use two; is there anyone out there that can give me a definitive response to why some solutions only need one cable and some need two? I gather from the price that if you want one cable transmitter / receiver then the cost is much more. I've Google'd but it only tends to offer me the actual product and not the answer to what difference there is between the two. Thanks
  15. Why not use the Chrome ADM templates and specify the proxy server?
  16. Are you a domain admin? Then I would hazard a guess it's a good move for you to be able to see through the tree. What status are the other users? It will be down to permissions. What do you currently have set?
  17. I'm looking into rolling out Office 2013 across school over the coming weeks. I have got the ADMX/ADML downloaded, I have imported these into my Central Store, are these backwards compatible with Office 2010? I do I need to still keep the Office 2010 ADMX/ADML files for the users still on that version?
  18. That's the one! Out of interest, how did you arrive at that key?
  19. It seems to disappear when I go one further and drop IE11 on there. Hmmm. Very odd.
  20. It does indeed. I did wonder if it was a scheduled task like when the browser choice came in but there's nothing in there either.
  21. Thanks Norphy, I did previously have Prevent performance of first run customize settings enabled. Updated the inetres.admx and adml and that was renamed 'Prevent First Run Wizard'. I have it set just like yours but still nothing
  22. I mean, it's not the end of the world, it's just one of those annoyances that is lingering around.
  23. Recently rolled out the IE10 upgrade to all Windows 7 machines. I can't seem to supress the new tab of 'Meet Your New Browser' each time a user logs into a machine. Has anyone else come across this problem? I have tried a few things to stop it; GPO enabled - Prevent performance of First Run Customize settings Taken following registry keys from HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main - IE10RunOnceCompletionTime, IE10RunOncePerInstallCompleted, IE10TourNoShow, IE10TourShown and IE10TourShownTime to no avail. I'd be really appreciative of any help on this one.
  24. Hi, Hopefully you'll bear with me on this one, I'm looking for advice and / or how you are currently deploying your iPads. We currently have two differing uses of iPads; bays and student one-to-one project. I think the easiest thing to do would be to explain what we're currently doing, then assess what and how we want to improve. Currently, we use the Lightspeed MDM solution. We have VPP codes but now want to move over to the managed distribution so we retain the ownership of the app. At the moment we are using one Apple ID to configure all iPads (though we do buy enough codes to cover the amount of iPads). We have been using Apple Configurator to supervise, install the MDM profile and then Configurator to deploy the Apps (quicker than OTA). The main problem we come up against, more so on the one-to-one iPads where the students have their own Apple ID, is that any updates to the 'base' setup we do, they require the school Apple ID to update those Apps. This isn't ideal. I find the whole process of configuring iPads troublesome and too time consuming, they can't make it too easy like applying Apps to the device rather than an Apple ID, can they? It really isn't fit for purpose. Anyway, I'm hoping someone can point me in the direction of applying Apps to devices as a base build, handing them over to students and then them not being prompted for the school Apple ID. If we're doing it completely wrong, that's fine, we'd just like a few pointers on how the rest of you are bypassing these little niggles.
  25. Ignore this post now. Resolved the problem. Looks like my virtual machine adapters were interfering somehow. If I disable those adapters it works fine.
