Found this on another site......................... Brother lasers do seem to be an absolute waste of time and money. If you don't have Blu-tack, try painting Tip-Exx into the little holes. I got this tip from http://www.epiicenter.com/consulting/toner.html which will also show the fix in pictures. When you think how much money has been wasted in the past by the disposable of toner-filled cartridges. Oh and by the way, the older and dirtier the printer gets, the quicker the toner warning will appear. It's also worth resetting the drum counter ONCE. Brother's consumable warnings are conservative to the say the LEAST. (Open front cover, and hold button down till all three lights come on) ***** - "You DON'T need to see the screen!!" - *****

do your kids have mandatory profiles?

I am new to this so please bear with me. I have read lots of older posts about this subject so please hear me out. I have read that we no longer need or should have mandatory profiles and i tend to agree ( i think ) What i have is a default user profile for all pupil users. this profile has a user.man to prevent any changes being saved. But does the GPO setting ' don't save settings on exit' do exactly the same.? If it does, does this also include any history or cookies that may have come down when using the internet? Thanks

Does anyone use the BBC Bitesize revision website? After a random time, whether the browser has been active within the site or not, Internet Explorer errors. The error logged in the Event Log is: Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 6.0.2800.1106, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x051863b0. We think this is connected with Mandatory Profiles or possibly redirected Application Data but can't say for certain.

Is anyone running the ECDL at their school either for the students, 6th Form or Adult Education. Our school are thinking of bringing this in for all students and possibly adult Ed. I like to know any feedback you have, do you use the books for resource or the CD? Do you do all the test online? Are you an accredited test centre?

I have a setting in my GPO to disable the 'Tools>Internet Option' in IE and it works fine. Today i was told that certain pupils for course work need to go to Tools OPtions in WORD to porove htey have done somthing or other in a print screen. The trouble is this option os also greyed out in Word. I do not have any office.adm files installed let alone configured. Could this setting in IE be doing this or have i got somthing else set up and configured wrong? Anyone got any ideas?

We have a server 2003/xp network. waht i want to do is deploy through GPO the latest version of Quicktime. I know it comes with iTunes but i only want to deploy quictime. Does quicktime come with a .msi package for deployment? Can this be done or has any one done it? Please advise me....! I thoughti had read on the forum somewhere about this but i cannot find it now from a search.

Found the info below on Blog, will try it out this week. Let me know if any one else trys it out. RIS problem - restore image to smaller harddisk Yesterday I had a problem with RIS (remote installation services), something that's categorized as "by design". The problem is this: when you create an image using riprep.exe it takes an image of your harddisk (of course it does) but it also stores characteristics of your partition on the server (e.g. partition of 40 GB). When you try to 'download' the image (using PXE-boot) to another smaller harddisk (which has enough capacity to hold the complete image however, e.g. 4GB used of the 40 GB) it won't work (nice little error message, see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;320982 for the official description and solution). Yeah great :-) So, I came to the conclusion that RIS has to store somewhere on the server the size of the partition that was used to make the image (what a deductive brain, wow). The file in question is Imirror.dat (in the i386\Mirror1 directory). It's a binary file, but using a tool like WinHex you can clearly see that it holds the partition data (as well as the used HAL, OS version, directory for the OS installation, file system type, drive letter). Luckily we had another Imirror.dat file that was created by running riprep.exe on a computer with a smaller harddisk size. In fact only 15 bytes in the two files were different. If I find some time, I'll try to find out where the partition size is kept, but for now replacing the file of the image that was too big by the other one (created by riprep on the computer with the smaller harddisk size) worked like a charm. For people who don't have an image of a smaller harddisk yet, the following procedure can help: 1. Use the computer with the smallest harddisk that needs to be RIS-ed. 2. If it already has an OS on it, start riprep.exe (via the UNC path \\server\reminst\); otherwise install an OS first (just the core is enough) and start riprep.exe. 3. While running riprep.exe on the computer with the smaller harddisk, watch the Images folder on the server, in particular the Mirror1 directory of the new image; the Imirror.dat file is made very early in the riprep.exe process (before the files of the harddisk are copied to the server). 4. Grab that Imirror.dat file and copy it to the Mirror1 folder of the image to-be-fixed (but make sure you keep the original file by renaming it). Hopefully this information is helpful for other people struggling with this as well. Please note that this is not a supported solution (refer to KB article).

Our head of Dept wants to start using blogs for the kids but especially blog cast. I know what they are are but have never created one. I have set up several blogs so I am ok with that but not blog casts. Is any one already doing this with their kids? Could you advise me on best practices or point me to several web sites that will help me on my way to trying to bring this in to our school. Many thanks.

I have just set up shadow copies on our Server. I have a D: drive that has the student home directories on. I have installed a 300gb hard drive on a ide on the same sever. This drive is labeled F:. I have enabled shadow copies on the D: drive and told it to store the shadow copies on F:. After a couple of hours it said that 900m was being currently used for the shadow copies. But if i manual go to F: i cannot see anything on the drive. Is this correct. i know this is probably a very basic question to most of you but I thought i would see some sort of file/files on the F: drive where the shadow copies are being directed to . Have i set it up wrong? Should i see some file/files or not? Please advise me please.

I have read a few articles now about Shadow Copies. I know you have to install a msi package to al th emachines to enable the users to use the facility. To be honest all i want to use it for is for admin use. So, if a kid comes tous and says i have lost/deleted/ file etc i can just log on to the file server that shadow copies runs on and replace if for them. I don't really want them to be able to have access to the facility themselves. Does this sound stupid to do it this way or has anyone else have any ideas?

I am new to all this as my Team Leader is a old NT4 guy. I have one OU called rooms and inside this Ou i have 10 OU's reached named after the room.ie room2, room3, etc Inside the room Os's are around 10 PC's each. At the moment i have chosen 2 rooms to deploy a picee of safotware to and it all works fine. I now want to deploy it to all the other rooms. If i put the MSI install at the top level OU eg rooms it will deploy to all the rooms, but what happens to the individual OU's that i have already deployed to inside the top level OU. does it over install or check to see whats there. Could someone please explain, Also I f i only want it on 9 of the rooms instead of 10 how do i stop it from going to the one i dont want. do have it to deploy it to the 9 rooms separately or can i stop it going the one. If i try block inheritance on the OU i dont want the software to goto does it block all inheritance ie a the top level OU rooms i have scripts running to map drives to all the rooms. Hope i have made sense.

I have just had delivered a Mini Mac that i won in a local newspaper competition. I know F*c* all about MAc's and have only ever seen a friend use his laptop a few times. I would really like to use it as a second pc in my house, for parents to use etc. Can i just buy any USB wiress adapter to work in the Mac as i want to connect to my wireless network(the apple ones are espensive) Do Mac and XP work well on a wireless network? Can you remote a Mac form Xp (ie like remote desktop) Other help and advice appreciated. I have an appraisal coming up and part of it is to put a PowerPoint presentation together on the following subject. Security of IT Systems. I need to cover: Security in relationship to desktops,email,wireless Physical Security Acceptable user Policy Any other relates issues. I need to deliver this as if it was aimed at head teachers to explain security if ICT systems. Any tips or advice of content etc.

A member of SLT has handed me a DVD and he wants one of the vob files to be converted so it can be put on the web site. i have converted it to mp4 with a low quality version for dial up users and a high quality version for boradband users. I am not really interested in having the video play on the site so i intend to just put two links on the site for slow and fast conections. i just wondered how you would do this.? Is mp4 ok to convert the file to? Is this a good way to have the files to download? i am a Dreamweaver user but only really done standard plain sites and never had to do anyting with video.

We will soon be having new laptops for teachers on a 3 yr rental agreement. Over the past 6 months a lot of staff have had stand alone printers for their desks ( non IT rooms) The printers are Brother 2030 laser printers. We must have over 20+ of these now but originally htey came in ones and twos and were installed manually. i dont fancy the prospect of doing this again. Is it possible to add printer drivers to a RIS/Unattended image so that when one of these printers is attached by USB it will be automatically detected? is it possible to add printer drivers to a image anyway?

How do i do this....sorry for bing a numpty...... :?

I hav efound the service.....what do you recommend the settings to be? If i change it to 'automatic' i get prompted to add users/groups If i want to send messages say with net send who should be in this security policy? Domain admins or just the user who need to send messages around the network to pc's?
