  1. A couple of dates for your diaries from Concero here: Google for Education Discovery Day Friday 2nd October | Google UK, London - https://www.concero.education/discoveryday/ Microsoft Education Leadership Day Wednesday 7th October | Microsoft Paddington, London - https://www.concero.education/leadershipday/
  2. Game finally in administration - https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2026/07/uk-retailer-game-entered-administration-owing-a-staggering-p16-million
  3. When I was a kid he was 'the man'. A sad loss and a hugely talented footballer.
  4. Took part in a moth survey at my girlfriends dads house on the south side of the Ribble estuary on Saturday. A great day, lot's of moths and butterflies out, then some nice (and much needed) downpours in the afternoon as we were all hading home. Not bad pics for a phone camera!
  5. Wow! I thought it was iffy when motherboards started to have their 'I'm just going to download my app in the background without telling you' option in the BIOS. This is very bad, and I'm pretty sure that it's in breach of numerous data protection and privacy legislation. Mind you, they did half the price of that monitor! 😄
  6. May the sun shine, your installs go flawlessly and you get some time off without any last minute rushes at all, and remember, we'll still be here when you need us
  7. Had to take my car for a long run out last night due to a clogged DPF and (very) reduced performance. A quick top of of fuel and some Forte DPF cleaner added to the tank, and we headed off to Long Meg and her Daughters near Penrith. I don't think I've ever been there in summer and certainly not is t-shirt and shorts weather! The bonus was that we had the place to ourselves. And yes, the Forte stuff worked most of my horses were back for the return journey
  8. That is very sad, one of the few 'good guy' actors out there that didn't have any scandals or bad behaviour. Born in Northern Ireland too - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Neill - and love his full name, Sir Nigel John Dermot "Sam" Neill. Didn't see that one coming!
  9. I'm currently reading Project Hail Mary. I loved the film, and the book is much, much better! It's told from the first person perspective and has a lot more science, but so well written that it explains everything very well indeed. Yes, there are a lot of changes from the film (for obvious reasons), but at the same time, answers a lot of the questions that the film gave no answers to. If you haven't read it yet, then you really should.
  10. Saw this yesterday, and have to give is a 'C'. Not Spielburg's best effort, and whilst it had a lot of good ideas, I don't think the film knew what it wanted to be. Worth watching when it comes to streaming though. Two takeaways we got from it though: There is a need for a decent henchmen recruiting agency as their own recruiting seems to be lacking. There is also an opening for Evil Corporations staff clothing company. Everyone in black is very confusing.
  11. I went from the Cyrix 200 to a K6-2 400. It was a hell of a leap! I then had a K6-2 450 then 500 before jumping onto an Athlon 750. @FN-GM I see lots discs at my local auction house fetching good money, that and 'big box' PC games (with discs, manuals, posters etc.).
  12. Currently a hundred pages into Project Hail Mary. I'd seen the film when it was in the cinemas and utterly loved it. I'm now utterly loving the book!
  13. One reason Time was so cheap compared to other was that (allegedly) much testing of components and systems was skipped and lots of people received systems DoA. I recall their shops having charts on the walls showing how a Cyrix was juts as good as a Pentium. Thankfully the Cyrix was socket 7 so could take AMD K6 CPU's.
  14. Sadly, they are not going for a second season, which is a great shame as I really enjoyed this series - https://hollywoodlife.com/feature/why-was-the-boroughs-cancelled-by-netflix-5545768/
  15. @itskdog Google have got back to me and tell us that Aluminium will not affect education products for several years and the advice from Google is to continue using Chromebooks and ChromeOS Flex.
  16. Please note that the Bromcom talk has been postponed, we'll let you know as soon as we can the new date. Hopefully we'll be able to get both Bromcom and the NCSC on the same week.
  17. No idea, I suppose it may well be that it could either be a stepping stone to Aluminium from non-Google devices, or Aluminium may have certain hardware requirements that negate x86 CPU's. By all accounts the only demos have been on ARM devices so far. According to the Wikipedia article here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aluminium_OS - Aluminium - is going to be rolled out to Chromebooks with no mention of non-Google devices...yet. I'll drop them a line and try to see if I can't find out for you.
  18. Fiona @Google has been very kind today and sent us (as in all of us) a PDF (attached) outlining how you can sign up to receive a free Flex kit to allow you to upgrade older non-Google hardware (PC's and Mac's) to ChromeOS Flex. They also holding a webinar on the 2nd July at 11am to cover how to get the best out of it. You can register for the webinar here - https://educationonair.withgoogle.com/events/edu-on-air-k12?talk=refresh-your-device-fleet-k12-edled ChromeOS Flex.pdf
  19. I've just had a rather nice note from Google to let you all know that their 2027 2027 IT Admin Summit is to take place on Friday the 26th Feb 2027 at the Google HQ, King's Cross. There is no sign-up page yet and apparently this will go up around September and we'll let you know when it goes live. We missed this years due to being invited a tad too late and had other things on, but we are planning to attend in 2027

  20. Just a reminder that if you have any questions for Tom Newton (presenting for Smoothwall) about his talk today, you can either post them here or live in the chatbox on YouTube during the presentation and we'll get through them all at the end of his talk. See you there at 2pm
  21. Over the past twelve months, Tom Newton has been very active (and not just on EduGeek - around 250 posts since the last EDIT, for those counting). For some reason he’s been allowed in the room for some of the most important conversations happening in UK online safety: Working alongside the DfE as it clarified new filtering standards Attending the IWF's annual report launch Collaborating with the UK Safer Internet Centre And helping ADAMnetworks to uncover a DNS vulnerability that the wider security community is only just starting to talk about… Consider this session your debrief. Tom will walk through the four most significant things he's learned this year and what they mean for the IT professionals responsible for implementing everything that gets decided in those rooms. What’s on the agenda: Department for Education: Two new clarifications on filtering and how they may impact your future choices IWF: The latest annual report — including the sobering story of one of the victims behind the data, and a valuable service Tom thinks all schools should know about. UK Safer Internet Centre: Its latest research on how young people are using AI and what it suggests about what schools are — and aren't — seeing on their networks. Underminr: A major DNS blind spot recently uncovered by ADAMnetworks that Tom predicts will generate the most interesting conversation of the session. Turns out he does do some actual work - who knew? Be sure to attend so we can confirm to his employer he’s not just having them on. WATCH TUESDAY 09th June @ 2PM CLICK HERE TO REGISTER If you have any questions you'd like to ask Smoothwall, and may not be able to post live, then please feel free to post them below and we'll ask them for you at the end of the talk. Learn more about Smoothwall at https://smoothwall.com/
  22. I'm looking at ditching Virgin this summer, my contract is up in early August. For what I currently pay (£33 pm) I get 280Mb down and 22Mb up. Oh, and they want to move that to £64pm if I don't renegotiate, and TBH, it hasn't been that reliable recently. For the same price I can move to YouFibre and get 900Mb up and down as well as a static IP. I've seen that one or two of you had bad experiences of them, but any feedback, good or bad, would be much appreciated as I'm about to pull the plug on Virgin and move to a new ISP very soon.
  23. Just a quick heads-up to let you all know that the NCSC's webinar will not be recorded (for valid reasons). If you want to see their talk then please register (so we can send you the webinar link) and watch it live.
