Smoothwall: Proof of Work - Tom's Insights from the Frontlines of Digital Safety

Over the past twelve months, Tom Newton has been very active (and not just on EduGeek - around 250 posts since the last EDIT, for those counting). For some reason he’s been allowed in the room for some of the most important conversations happening in UK online safety:

 

 

  • Working alongside the DfE as it clarified new filtering standards
  • Attending the IWF's annual report launch
  • Collaborating with the UK Safer Internet Centre
  • And helping ADAMnetworks to uncover a DNS vulnerability that the wider security community is only just starting to talk about…


Consider this session your debrief. Tom will walk through the four most significant things he's learned this year and what they mean for the IT professionals responsible for implementing everything that gets decided in those rooms.

Department for Education: Two new clarifications on filtering and how they may impact your future choices

IWF:  The latest annual report — including the sobering story of one of the victims behind the data, and a valuable service Tom thinks all schools should know about. 

UK Safer Internet Centre: Its latest research on how young people are using AI and what it suggests about what schools are — and aren't — seeing on their networks. 

Underminr: A major DNS blind spot recently uncovered by ADAMnetworks that Tom predicts will generate the most interesting conversation of the session.


Turns out he does do some actual work - who knew?

Smoothwall recently released a video teasing "hey, we're planning to integrate SW Monitor and SW Cloud filter in one dashboard for DSLs".

 

Any plans to integrate with on-prem SW at all?  Our setup (schools connected together, all filtered via SW on-prem in a third party datacentre) doesn't migrate nicely to cloud filter without losing functionality.
