Hi All, Just wanted to get everyone elses feedback on this i think i know which method i am going for but would be interested to hear everyone elses thoughts. We are currently going to be moving the server room round which opens up opportunity to look at changing the way some of the cabling etc is done. The core switches currently sit next to the main server racking although at its current state all the servers just have cabling going direct across the floor to the core switch (not ideal positioning). Now i had proposed that we look at just properly trunking the 27 odd cables correctly across to the server cabinet (no more than 3 meters away) however it has been suggested that a secondary switch is placed in the server cabinet and then connect everything up that way with obviously far fewer cables going back to the core switch. I just feel in my mind this would be un-nessesary with the cabinets being so close together and if anything just add another junction in the process. Just wondered what everyone else thinks/would do? This is true and the same for the now 'Mac Apps' in the sence although there are ways round officially according to apple you cant buy a site licence and all licences have to be bought individually and attributed to individual apple users id's. Yes you read that correctly so if you had 100 macs that all needed logic the offical guidelines are that you would need 100 apple user id's Alot of these processes have become cumbersome as strangley the market has directed their efforts to appease the home user end of the market and they seem to ahve forgotten bussiness and educational establishment needed. Crazy if you ask me!

We looked into this a while back and it actually boiled down to us having to buy the books individually to ensure nothing was infrindged upon

We are the same setup as you but trying to use Air print which has proved to be a total nightmare as we are trying to backpack it off papercut for user identification. Have a look at the error logs and see if anything is telling as to what the problem might be a smaller issue i was dealing with was proven to be an authentication issue

Hi All, Does anyone know if WGM and profile manager can coincide in the same server and communicate changes to each other? i currently have WGM installed on Mountain Lion Server due to a couple of older clients however i am slightly concerned about clashing and whether anyone has experienced and good or bad things with the same setup Many thanks

Hi Jordan, See I tried that but it would only see the server apps even on the client. I now this could be done as a get around when wgm was in full use

Ha ha that would be logical, sheesh man tis a Saturday, I shouldn't be thinking about work anyway lol

So frustrating as Logic Pro alone is like a 56gb install, lol I have only allocated a 100gb portion to server hdd as I didn't think I would have to do this

Thanks I know how profile manager works however this was a specific issue, plugging business was aimed at the company website you have in your profile, anyway no more on this we are all adults and I am not into point scoring

Hi All, Another day another question! I cant seem to work out how to locate the applications i have installed on the clients to be added onto the dock Via profile manager as profile manager only sees the server and what is isntalled on the server, i cant load profile manager on the client as obviosuly it only sees the server which was something you could have got away with in WGM. Surely it cant be the case i will ahve to install all software on the server for it to be able to see the applications and allow allocation of shortcuts

I'm starting to wonder if that is the best way forward, I am currently using pm for everything however now I can't get ad users to pick up mac policies I am hoping I can just create a user group in wgm purely for ad users and add bits there I only need to map an smb share which works through od just not ad users

Hi Steve I hadn't even had a chance to consider it to be honest, I had a very short space of time to make magic happen with an os I wouldn't normally deal with. Luckily most things have been pretty straight forward and I have already learnt a lot in the process. Cheers for the suggestion now things are calming down I should be able to have a look

I am really confused, i built 9 imacs over the network with a new image i created and when i try and enrol any of them onto the profile manager they all seem to be using the same profile so for example if i logon to mac1 and try and enrol it it will go on fine but if i then log onto mac2 it says already enrolled and equally if i then remove the profile from mac 2 then mac 1 loses it. Sorry this is probably something really simple but has totally thrown me off

Can no one help with this at all, i just can't get mac profiles to react when an AD user logs into a mac

Well amazingly i managed to get the mammoth image to create at 67gb in total it finally completed building after the third attempt it built in a massive 15 and a half hours!!!!!!!

Sounds similar to me, is deploystudio worth taking a look at? is it alot to learn in less than a week? i only have till easter ends which is for us to have this all done completed and tested will full roll out

Im going to try in the morning hooking the host mac up the mac Xserve and do it directly to there instead of my mac mini server and see what happens

Just wanted to check as i am fully from a Windows background and didnt know if the Mac's where a little quirky in that sense really odd it failing, so frustrating as well!

Out of interest as you have got me thinking now, when using the netrestore and you were saying about space when it is creating the image is it creating the whole HDD as an image including unused space? as in is it creating a 320gb image or just what is actually on the drive which totals around 77gb with apps etc? as if it is the full HDD that may explain it grounding and failing

But in 'theory' i have done everything i need to do right? Sorry do you mind just checking over what i am doing, i am creating a netrestore image as i want to use a base system that i have preinstalled apps and customization on and want that to be duplicated over to other clients on the network? There seems to be loads of info on Netboot over the web but that from what i gather is not what i want as it is almost like thin clients. is this right? and yet barely any info on what i want to do in just creating a then duplicating that image to the clients to the local drive thank you for your time on this i do appreciate it!
