I agree entirely..the thread should be locked. I tried to answer the 5 things with honest answers, (though I will grant you that I probably should have used the word Immigration, rather than immigrants), nevertheless it seems to have then destroyed the thread and turned it almost into a witchhunt against personal opinions. I say lock the thread. Myself, I am taking a break from Edugeek for a while, which will no doubt please the female masses , I make a point in life never to judge anyone for their opinions and thoughts (hence why I dont argue the toss with anyones choice of 5 in this thread) , no matter how much I agree or disagree with them, I respect their right to have any given opinion and dont attempt to sway their opinion. Nevertheless, I have waffled on enough, and inadvertedly continued the serious tack rather than the light hearted. Lock it and be done with it.

See now the fun light hearted thread has totally gone ! Ah well...was a welcome light while it lasted

Wow....somewhere along the line, this jovial light hearted thread for a little bit of fun suddenly took a turn to a serious , more opinionated, approval or disapproval of peoples personal opinions and vastly less fun thread. I vote we go back to the OS Wars with the delicious Phillipa Forrester part, that was much more pleasing

Oooooh !!!!! this looks like fun !! 1. Religion - probably the cause of more trouble and strife than anything else in the history of the world 2. Immigrants - Not to be racist, but really we do need to put the brakes on things as they are currently getting out of hand and only going to get worse. We are a tiny enough island as it is. 3. Irresponsible parents - such as the baby factories who churn out kids in order to raise benefits rather than any thought of bringing a child into a loving environment and the responsibilities which come with that 4. Celebrity obsession - everything from teenagers growing up with nothing more than the aim of being on big brother, or becoming the next WAG, right through to the public and medias fascination with such things as what David Beckham had for breakfast last weekend 5. Political correctness - as some of you may have noticed...I am not a terribly PC person, nor will ever I be, really cant stand the softly softly nicey nicey approach that has encompassed modern times. Shame its only 5...I could have reached 10 I reckon !

Ah...my bad, I misread the post yeah, when I did ours on Tuesday, it just showed "SIMSserver\SIMS2005" , so I imagine you are right, yours should show SERVER01\whatever

Daft though it may sound, try logging into SIMS on the server, then log out of sims and then run the migration tool again.

I can see where you are coming from..the worrying thing for me , on a personal level, is that as I say, I dont have that training in anything I do at all...either hardware related, software related, server related, or cabling related. Along those lines of worry, I shouldnt even really be doing the job I have done for the last 15 years. (EDIT : not just done, but done extremely well, at least thats what I am told...hell, does one good to stroke ones own ego from time to time) I always knew I should have been a tester of bananas to make sure they were straight enough to meet EU regulations !! (certainly would have been alot less stressful...although those green ones can be a bit aggressive at times !)

I like to think so , in my case, I guess its down to a combination of thorough research, plenty of care, practice and experience. I would think that a good guideline though would be , if in any doubt, dont attempt it. Again, as with many things in life...like skiing...or putting up that shed in the garden which you bought last summer but just never quite got round to

I think the major problem with this thread , as a whole, is that its become embroiled in too many "blacks and whites". Personally I have been laying datacables in some form or another for nearly 15 years now, across multiple schools (and yes knthrak I am fully aware of the low smoke and multiple phase zones), and frankly I would quite readily put the quality of one of my installations up against the quality of a "professional" installation. I guess what I am saying is that, like many things, its not always quite so black and white. In theory, a certified installer *should* be of a better standard than a non-certified installer. However, that simply isnt always the case. Sometimes a non-certified person can do a better job than some certified folks, and likewise some non-certified folks simply dont do as good a job as some certified folks. In a way its akin to MS certifications..over the years I have met some people who have MS certifications out of their ears, yet have been simply terrible at their job and not known their way around a network, on the other hand I have known some people who have an extensive knowledge and ability, yet dont hold a certificate in diddly. Thats just my opinion on it anyway, I just dont see things in black and white. I have no certifications in anything...nothing at all. Nothing to do with servers, yet I maintain wodgefuls of them, nothing to do with cabling, yet I have done it for nigh on 15 years, and in my opinion, to an exceptional standard (far better for instance than one of the , quite well known, contractors around here who installed an entire suite of a local school yet only bothered to connect 2 of the pairs in each network point, which only further highlights my point about certifications and qualifications), I have no certifications in power tools, or ladder climbing, or putting up shelves, or hanging a corkboard, or using AD, or installing a moodle server, or setting up an exchange server, or swapping out a faulty network card, or hard drive, or memory, or installing an operating system..yet I am equally assured of the quality and standard of what I do every working day of the year. Whats more, I would stand what I do up against anyone with a certificate in any of those things. Sometimes having a piece of paper to wave , isnt a sign of quality, as Neville Chamberlain found out to his regret (then again, sometimes it is....thats the anti-black and white effect )

On the other hand of course, I prefer moodle over the more expensive VLE solution our LEA has picked. Like all things in life, cutting costs works both ways in pros and cons

We do all of ours ourselves, I've lost track now of just how much we have done, but its well into the hundreds of points and goodness knows how much trunking. As you mention Maniac, it saves us a fortune in our budget , which is handy as we can spend that on hardware instead We do all our projector and smartboard installations as well, which saves a few bob too. Like you Maniac, I can remember when we first cabled an ICT suite, we did it during the summer break, 32 points, few hundred metres of cable, running along the dual channel trunking we put on the walls, and down into and under the flooring. Into the office adjoining, where we installed a cabinet, switches and panels. I have to say, that when we had finished it all, we were so SO proud of it...it looked phenomenal Sadly..the kids smashed the pcs up and ruined the room within 3 days of the start of term, but just for a moment it was great

Oh Lords of Midnight, and the sequel Doomdarks Revenge were utterly awesome. I still maintain to this day that the quality of the games from the speccy, amiga, ST days is far superior to most of the modern games. Without the ability to create swanky graphics, the designers back then had to concentrate on gameplay and sheer fun...these days most designers just try and create games that look flashy and contain little to no substance and can usually be completed in a day or two

Understandable, of course not everyone is in a position to be able to do the installs themselves, we're just lucky. Handy to have the budget available for other things too
