Hi, I've got a school that were given a bunch of iPads through the DFE device program. Problem is, when I've asked the DFE to enroll them with the schools DEP ID, they've responded with the following: "Thank you for your email. The deadline has now passed to provide your organisation's information so our delivery partner may enrol your devices in Apple's Device Enrolment Programme (DEP). We recommend reading Apple's guidance to see your options for managing your iPads. Kind regards," Now I've been working with DEP since it launched and this is the first time I've ever been told this. I've had schools that we've been able to go back 2-3 years and get their older iPads enrolled by the reseller. Is this just the DFE/Tech Data being lazy? Does anyone know if there's an ownership change limit? I'm trying to get the purchase date now, but they cant be more than a month or two old. Cheers

Thanks guys. I'm going to have to bite the bullet at one of my schools and stick lion server on. I've phoned apple care about the upgrade, but haven't heard anything back as to what I need to buy to do it though. Some people claim I just need to run the Lion upgrade, and others say I have to buy it and the server add-on for it to work. Even the official upgrade/migration doc from apple is annoyingly vague on what needs to be done.

We have a 10.6.8 server and just took delivery of some 10.7 imacs. After applying the .local fix at http://www.centrify.com/downloads/public/centrify-directcontrol-for-mac-local-domain-workaround.pdf I was able to join them to the domains (after installing 10.7.2), but the clients will not show up in WGM. Preferences set over users who log on apply to the machine properly, but you cannot add them to computer groups. I really dont want to risk killing the server with a Lion On a side note, has anyone tried 10.7.3 on .local domains yet? Is joining and logging on any faster?

I'm not at a mac school at the moment, but I think it's removed when you select the "use simple finder" option of finder preferences in WGM.

I've got lion server in 2 of my schools. I find that as long as your server has the newest version of the OS on, it's fine. We received a macbook pro with 10.7.1 preloaded and as soon as I connected it to the open directory, the whole thing died. The server could not browse the active directory at all. AD accounts in workgroup manager were unavailable. I had to upgrade the server to 10.7.2 to get it working again. All the features that were easy to find in 10.6 are there (well most) but hidden. Server admin tools don't come pre-installed, which is just daft. But overall, it works just as well, and in the case of mixed networks with 10.5 and 10.6 on, much better than 10.6 server. I even got software update server to work, but that could just be the ISP making changes that improve service for once. Another thing that's really important is to get old clients service packed before trying to connect. 10.5.7 has real issues with directory utility that were fixed up in .8. You also need a 10.7 client to remotely manage the thing as previous versions of server admin tools wont connect to 10.7 server.

It's a difficult one for me to test as the school I do all my mac testing in now is a .net domain. Have you added .local to the search domains in the network pref pane and extended the mDNS timeout as is recommended for 10.6?

All your Shares can be added to the dock using workgroup manager. This is how I did it, which mounts them on first click rather than at login, which some people dont like to do. It improved login times so much doing it this way. On your machine with the admin tools, connect to the shares. Then in workgroup manager, go to dock preferences for your user group and add each mounted volume to the right of the dock. Easy.

You need to wait until it comes out. We have all heard rumours, but until it comes out we wont know what the deal is. Wadtech went through the most likely way of doing things. The best route for you would be to get a snow leopard upgrade for one of your systems, then download 10.6.7 which has the app store and buy the upgrade. *from what I hear* You can then make an install media once Lion is installed which can be installed on any mac you own (Dont know how this would work in a school licence wise), regardless of the itunes account. Once it's installed, I'm guessing it wont need the itunes password. That would be a nightmare. This would tally with the previous upgrade licence which allowed you to install snow leopard on 3 machines if you bought the £41 family pack (Family packs haven't been announced yet). Once Lion is on your machines, you then go to the mac app store and buy the server app. This way it will cost you the price of lion once and the price of the server app once. Dont buy snow leopard server as it would be a waste of money at this stage unless you intend to stick with that OS.

Well. I played around with lion server this morning. Everything is as it was it would appear. Server admin and workgroup manager both still work in DP4. There are some new tools and wizards for setting things up, but undeneath it all it looks the same. There are less services in server admin so some things have been removed like web isn't an option anymore, wiki and ical server arn't in the list. I'm guessing these will be back in the full release as they are listed on wikipedia as being updated. I had an issue with it saying I had in invalid hostname when I tried to set up an open directory master, but i'm not going to bother with that for now. Lion is nice btw. Launchpad is a bit pointless, but otherwise, it's a great update and the server tools seem to be enhanced rather than reduced as I'd feared. Now let me install it on a PC Xeon server and everything would be cracking.

I'm working in primaries, so the requirements for server hardware is very low. All the heavy lifting is still done in school by the quad-core xeon's in the Dell T610's we use. The mac mini servers suit us fine as they are only really there to provide open directory and system policies.

Thanks for that. I had a feeling WGM was gone. Such a shame as it's a great tool. I've managed to find an iMac to test it on, so by wednesday I should know what i'm dealing with. I do worry that while my schools become more interested in Mac OS, Apple seem to be less and less interested in schools by the day. I can see why with their consumer electronics brands booming, it makes sense for them to want to concentrate on that. It says something that the company is no longer called Apple Computer Inc...

Has anyone used the server tools in the developer release of Lion yet? If so, do they match up to 10.6? Do we still have workgroup manager? I understand SaMBa has gone in favour of apples own SMB client.

I've got some USB headsets that work fine in OS X 10.6, except that OS X doesn't set the headphones as default audio, so carries on outputting to the internal speaker. Does anyone know of a way of setting the default audio device to USB on OS X. We have an xserve and workgroup manager running. I tried to import the audio plist, but no change. I've got 85 of the things and no desire to send them all back! Thanks.

Just an update as this thread has 137 views but no answers! The problem seemed to be caused by the use of WGM's parental settings and the fact that it filters content by setting up it's own transparent proxy to deal with it. I turned all parental controls off and bang. 8 year olds on fastgames once more. Credit for the solution goes to Tom at south Leeds CLC for committing an hour on the phone in order to help out when apple blamed active directory. Well done sir. And many thanks for your time.

I'm having a weird issue where the proxy settings from WGM for my pupils are being replaced by the local admin accounts settings just after login. The proxy works for a few seconds just after login, but start chrome or safari again and the proxy settings have gone. They are replaced by whatever the local admin accounts settings are, which is often blank. All my other prefs are applying and home directories are applying from AD. All are on 10.6.4 Please help !!!!!!

I've got a primary which only has 3 Windows PC's left on SIMS. I get the feeling the old PC's will be getting put out into classrooms soon though. All the macs do dual boot though.

Mac OS X v10.6: Active Directory binding lost on network transition (.local domain) This has sorted it out for me. I increased the value to 10 as a couple of systems are hanging off very poor desktop switches. The fix has to be re-applied after every service pack as the file this refers to is replaced by 10.6.4 back to 2!

The problem is that using a third party managed system to many people here (myself included) just seems like a waste of money when you can easily do all the things that classlink or CC4 can do with AD group policy and a few select tools. Take for example the school I'm in now. It bought into classlink XP at the cost of £25k before I took over. In order to upgrade the workstations to a new service pack you have to pay an annual fee to viglen of around £14k. Or you can not pay them, install an untarnished copy of xp (or 7, but not vista), and update it using the standard SP3 that M$ provide for download. The server has non of the classlink extras installed anymore, other than ghost, but is still easy to manage. Managed systems like classlink and CC are just a way for big IT vendors to hold you to ransom every year. If you dont know how to manage group policy, then google is a friend. Or get an IT company in to do the initial setup and provide training to yourselves. The worst thing you can do is tie yourself into another dodgy contract.

have you tried redirecting to a network location (\\server\desktop$ for example). Bare in mind that the folder you are redirecting to has to exist in advance. The policy will not create it at first logon as all it is doing is changing a registry key for the location of the desktop. Windows relies on it already being there. One windows XP the default path to the all users desktop is: c:\documents and setting\all users\desktop
