    iPad in schools

One of my schools bought themselves an iPad the other week. Great bit of kit. Really slick. Seemed to like the netgear wireless we have. Opened safari, the address changed to Leeds learning networks proxy adress, then froze. it would not resolve the home page for LLN at all. we tried another browser (took it home to download it) and it worked fine. Stupid safari. Once your logged in you can use the app store (passworded) and all other apps seem to work. I can see the point of them in this primary school. This kind of tech engages young people with much greater ease than a boring old desktop machine. It's tech that they see on the telly, but due to the area they live in will be unlikely to see anywhere other than school. The teacher who uses it has decided to buy 10 more this week, as the kids are using it so well and treating it with respect. If we didn't make progress for progress sake every now and then, we'd never get anywhere.
  2. I too am about to have a school go to mac. This is going to start with 13 staff macbooks and a macmini server. Then with any luck, a suite of 23 imac's. I've got schools where they have 3 or 4 and extending the schema worked ok, but this is the first time I'm going to be doing it properly. Any advise on things to do, what to avoid, anything at all is apreciated. I tried to get on the howtomac site, but it seems to be down, although that could just be LLN being useless!
  3. Yes, good luck to all who apply. You'll need it!
  4. I've had windows 7 machines in one of my primaries since the last week of december term and they work perfectly. The only daft bit of the deployment was having to install the 2008 resource kit and then enable its features in windows features. Why they cant ship with gpmc installed is beyond me. I'm downloading the trial of 7 for the desktop machines to see how it runs. P4 3Ghz and a gig of RAM should be enough, but we will see.
  5. Hi, One of my schools (primary), is going down the route of dual boot macs in their suite. Am I correct in thinking that this can deploy both os x and windows for me via an os x server? I've been doing some googleing but most documents are either too old or are about deploying one or the other. I have a reference machine ready with both 10.6.2 and xp pro ready to use and syspreped. Will this take images and deploy them out ghostcast style?
  6. Does anyone know how Viglen set the active desktop for their interactive page? I need to change the wallpaper to a jpg while our web guy has a chance to fix the page. It's not set in GP and I cant see it in any scripts. If I apply a wallpaper it is there, but hidden by the active web componant. Viglen wanted £24000 to support the network last time I called!

  8. Dabs had the 4850 for £72 a bit back. Ask about open box items too. And it pc pro's A-list graphics card.
  9. I'm running it on a crappy, old inspiron 8600 with a 1.4Ghz single core 32-bit cpu and it runs great. The same machine was unable to run vista to a usable level. Programs are responsive and the new layout of the taskbar is great, although the docking apps idea i'm sure i've seen that somewhere else... A massive step in the right direction for m$.

    COD 5 [PC]

I've been playing this alot on PS3, but i've had to go back to cod4. Too many people are exploiting glitches in order to get under the maps. Until it's fixed I'm not going on. An online game should be about having fair fun, not abusing the system.
  11. I dont know how many of you are in Leeds schools who actually use Enterprise, but nearly all the schools we manage use them for SIMS support. We've had a comapny who will remain nameless claiming that they are capita registered, yet a call to capita reveals that they have had numerous complaints about said company claiming to be acredited when they are not. No one seems to know what is going to happen. My company dont do sims support, and with only 2 1/2 months until the contract with enterprise ends, schools are nervous. Numerous small IT firms are circling as no one has a clue who will get prefered supplier status. It's a real shame too, as enterprise had finally got their arses into gear after the shocking first two years they had. Please god dont let it be RM!!!
  12. I've got macs logging onto various windows servers in a few schools through extending the schema (thanks to HodgeHi's link in this thread http://www.edugeek.net/forums/mac/27910-restrict-mac-like-group-policy-windows.html ). It worked a treat once I had read the instructions properly! The apple support forums are also fantastic as I discovered how to add pre made preference plists to WGM for things like mouse prefs (right click!!!). You dont need an xserve or third party software to lock down macs in work group manager.
  13. I'm pretty sure that the content on espresso is leased rather than bought. Some of my schools didn't renew when they had to pay for it and had there cachepilots removed from the school.
  14. I've had a nightmare with acer over various years. The old laptops for teachers travelmates. nearly every screen on those goes after two years. Then just when we decided to give them another go, we get sent a machine where the power junction on the back is broken on arrival!. Thats ok. It's only one machine after all. So I ring acer, who tell me that I must have broken it and that it will be a new mobo. At our cost! Whats that number for HP again?
  15. If anyone fancies some cod 4 (and after christmas 5) action (TDM prefered a the mo) feel free to add me: swimthefish Send me a little note with your request saying your from on here and I'll accept. Now wheres my headset gone...
  16. I installed it on friday. I was finally able to log in to it last night. Sonys servers have been sweating since it launched. Not to worry though, as Call of duty 4 will never fail me. I had a wonder around for half an hour. Seems nice. Played some pool (got beat) had a go on the arcades. Got slagged off by 12 year old man u fans. It was just like being on xbox live in the lobby area
