Hi were looking to have a look at using Google Gemini for free for a group of staff in part of our MAT and not particularly using anything else in the near future. https://edu.google.com/intl/ALL_uk/ai/gemini-for-education/ We would be using Microsoft for Authentication so no extra credentials for staff (or pupils if we ever got there) A couple of questions for those of you who have already done this sort of thing. Hi All, I've been at a few conferences lately with speakers suggesting that you should choose "either" Google or Microsoft in your institution / mat and stick with it. My take of this really is they are saying "Choose microsoft" as if your organisation talks to anyone else or sends anything anywhere they tend to need a microsoft format in some form or other. We work in a hybrid way but are thinking about changing this split, hence this post. Currently :- 3-18 We have given departments complete autonomy on choosing the best tools for their department. This has led to a bit of a mixed economy for pupils, so we are looking to guide more. All Staff have a Chromebook and access any microsoft services via a remote sessions and remote working. Some Teaching Staff have a Windows PC on their desk at the front of classroom or, 3-11 and Maths (Promethean) , DT (Sketchup, 2D Design), Music (Sibelius),Art (Photoshop) USB-c Dock and use their Chromebook if not above for all other departments. Office Only staff have a Windows PC for their day to day job. (SIMS Finance and HR all spit out Microsoft based files for working on) Email GMail 3-11 Pupils can access a PC or Chromebook or iPad depending on the task at hand and age of the pupil. 11-18 Pupils - 1-1 Chromebook Post 16 Pupils 1-1 Chromebook and BYOD option MACs for Music Production. (Garage Band and Logic) We have a VLE for "curriculum resource" and Intranet style functions. Google - Curriculum Facing resources and contact with pupils. Anyone who has asked can have a "Google Shared Drive" so is used for Management and Microsoft - Back office functions etc. Windows on site for shared drives, though we have moved home drives to OneDrive. The migration away from "Windows Shared Drives" to the next cloud based iteration is where we are thinking where do we draw the line for clarity? Along with many others the reason is cost reduction and improved remote access to resources. (To a large extent we will be able to remove our remote desktop solution). Streamlined ways of working with Power Automate or Google Apps Script How do you split and guide staff on what to use where, and where is the split? Do we jump to more google for the online services OR fire up teams and sharepoint? We could say all T&L is google and Back office is Microsoft, but what about reports on pupil performance? Is that "Google or Microsoft"? Just thinking about what others do and how do you do it? Where is your split? I'm not imagining a future where we are all one or the other as I think that does close the door on great functions either side. John

We are experiencing the same. Spent years getting rid of "multiple instances of the same person" and Edulink suggests we should go back to that nightmare. So far I can't see a way around. @SchoolDM What do you mean you have created "2 profiles"?

Hi All, There is a lot of information here about moving MIS and chatter about people moving away from SIMS. Just wondering for those who have what they have done about the need to keep some historical data? Attendance, SEND, Communications, Exam Results, telephone and addresses? Have you transferred historical data to the new MIS? Kept SIMS in a switched off state and switch it on if you need to check anything? Created an encrypted PDF of the "Person Output" for each pupil? Created a report of the relevant data and saved as an "encrypted pdf"? For those of you who have gone "cloud" what happens if you wish to switch cloud provider, are there mechanisms to keep this active even though you don't have a support contract?

SIMS connected is one way... But the horror stories i'm reading here don't fill me with joy!

Don't get me started about SIMS not being cloud native yet. But anyway, we are in a world where we are still using SIMS but would like to use a web browser to take lesson registers and submit behaviours and achievements. (Not really worried about any other functions) What options are out there? I've had a look at Emerge Desktop, but that doesn't seem to cope very well with "multiple Timetables" which we run. Does anyone have any recommendations? (Apart from ditch SIMS)

We are just having a rethink about how we provision Music Studio / Sound and Light / Production Support. (Sound and Light Team SALT) Currently we have generalist internal staff and a small group of pupils covering after school events, school productions and concerts with help from other teaching and support staff who are interested. It is a couple of productions for a few days each, and a couple of music concerts a few days each with weekend practices before, and any other events that require some sound and light involvement eg Dance Show's, Outside bookings, fashion shows etc. We are contemplating different structures to look after this sort of thing. We might carry on as we are, or one might be a role of "SALT / Music Tech". Does anyone have any examples of job descriptions / rates of pay etc? Or do you "hire in" support when it comes to those times? As ever there are many ways to skin a cat and this is another one of those, or if anyone is aware of a "Music Tech in education forum" similar to this please point me at it. How do you do it?

Hi All, We have an ageing infrastructure on premis and were looking if we can make some efficiencies in using either / both Google Drive or Microsoft 365 the default storage location for our on premis Windows systems instead of 20 TB of storage in our SAN across home drives and shared drives. Using the syncing tools that are out there or the onedrive applications to present a drive letter on windows PCs to some users who aren't willing or able (old software which is necessary to still be used) Anyone have any positive / negative experiences they are willing to share?

Updates returning to SIMS pretty quick so if we were using it for our attendance, would it be upto date? And do you write back to behaviour and achievement?

Are there any users of ePraise https://www.epraise.co.uk/ out there? We are looking at it for enabling browser based lesson and session attendance for writing back to SIMS among other things, so if there is anyone using it for this among the rest of it's features i'd be really interested to know your experience?

Where do you access the PE photos from? Apple ID or elsewhere?

We are looking at how we create and share photos within the school so we can produce better more dynamic material to share with parents. In days of yore we provided staff with iPads and they emailed all manor of photos around and about and the world was good.... (Or was it...) They weren't the right device for other content creation or to drive the front of classroom experience for us so we have moved on to laptop style devices but these aren't as portable and don't have as good a cameras so aren't appropriate for this sort of thing. So in Today's world.... We have a couple of trips google phone setup so it can take photos which are logged in and managed phones through workspace management The photos photos and videos automatically upload to a google photos account on the phone That photos account is shared with those who process the photos (They don't like the download of a zip file for multiple photos from this) Back at base once those photos are downloaded they can then be used on a device Chromebook / PC / the correct phone to process the photos onto the next stage. Staff cannot use their own devices to take photos of pupils. (Do other places allow this? As they have the best cameras about and we certainly can't buy all staff a pixel or iphone!) Any thoughts or methods you do this would be appreciated, the auto uploading from a device and then ease of transferring this to twitter, VLE or SchoolComms would be ideal. (Zipping of multiple photos seems to cause some issues for our end users) Do you have a rock solid method for auto uploading photos from digital cameras wirelessly? (I'd previously looked for Wireless Android Cameras but had no joy.) Does anyone use anything for managing photo repositories? Have you employed a photographer in your trust? Do you allow staff to take photos on their own personal phones? Have you found iPhones easier to deal with than Android?

So I'm not sure if this is the correct forum for this message, but I'm wrestling with a few questions and thought i'd canvas some opinion. Before we install any software on the windows network, chromebooks, iPads, Windows PCs we ask for those requesting the software to fill out a form. The starting point for this being GDPR thoughts. What data are you thinking of putting in there, how do they store the data, where is it stored etc. Just a confirmation that isn't too much to ask is it? Our data protection officer would then read their privacy policies etc and ask the company questions based on these and ask for clarification, before we then approve that service, or approve it with caveats. This often takes quite a bit of time to process correctly. Now that is all well and good if a piece of software or service you are looking to subscribe to is expecting this. But what about the software which isn't going to deal with data in the traditional sense. BUT as something is now being installed on a system it then does start to have access to data. A PST combiner for example. How do you know which one to trust and install and which one not to? If you are working on a Chromebook and we are requested to install an extension it then asks for permission to access your google drive.. Ooo quite a bit of data there i expect. What is it going to do with your google drive. Same for an extension that asks for access to your email. A python environment install. Something to connect to control a microbit Basically, how do we know the software we are installing is doing what it says it's going to do and nothing more? Upto now we are basing our choices around the reputation of the writers of the software so a "created in my garage over the weekend" piece of freeware probably won't get installed, but a piece of open source with millions of downloads probably will, as would something from Microsoft, Apple, Adobe etc though the recent supply chain attacks make me question this as they may be as problematic as something else. Does anyone out there have any thoughts on what they do to check or test? We aren't in a world where we can't trust everyone all the time to do the right thing. Or do we say, to heck with it. Let's just install anything anyone asks, if we can get it working move onto something else.

So we are looking at teaching Computing to GCSE. Network management 101 says don't let users run software you haven't approved and tested never mind let pupils run their own code. And never in a world where they can drop on a website and copy something someone else has written and run it with no clue what it actually might do! So how do you do it in a managed and network secure way? Maybe gotchas? Python seems to be language of choice, but there is a heck of a lot more to it than that. It's not going to be install python on the c drive of the computer and leave them to it... So what i'm looking for is for those who have been doing this for a long time to share some setup ideas and themes. What works well and what doesn't? There are websites out there that let you code and save. Anyone use them? How do you know they aren't going to close just before deadline day... Standalone PCs / Laptops which don't get used for anything else? VMs installed on the individual workstations which then restart a fresh every session? A suite with workstations just used for programming? Python installed on the standard workstations and cross your fingers? RDS environment where they all share a system with the programming tools and environment installed? Do you allow them access to the internet? And what of the exam courses that let you program in the exam? How have are you going to provision 50 pupils doing the exam when you actually only have one lab of 25? Any thoughts would be appreciated. We want to support but not put the network at risk. It's 30 years since my programming days. Pascal isn't where it's at anymore..... Or am i being paranoid as with python you can't get upto any mischief on the main network? All this is from the perspective of network management, what they actually teach and how is as ever in the hands of the teaching specialists!

What do you use for the screen reader? We are in the same boat looking for this for written exams and maybe listening exams. Did you get anywhere? I've just seen this https://www.cricksoft.com/uk/docsplus/chromebook has anyone used it? Listening we use a playlist on Windows Media Player on PCs.

We went old school.... Forget Solus Download the latest CD and then manually run. UpgradeFolder\Setups\Files SimsApplicationSetup.exe Our Setups folder on the server has an old version of setups files.. Seems to do the trick.

Has anyone got SIMS installed on Windows Server 2019 yet. Only need the workstation element of it. Solus is failing with errors despite all firewalls being off. Would a manual install work?
