Console reports an error on mounting the home directory, which is what I thought. However no indication of why it can't mount the home directory, path length is the same as other users who can login without any problems.

Hi, We have recently had an Apple Mac Integration with Novell eDirectory. The plug-in we use is called Kanaka. Most of our users can login no problem using their network accounts but some users get the message "unable to log you on at this time" I think it may be something to do with the length of the usernames/names that it uses to create a home directory although I'm not sure. Apple clients and OSX server are both running Snow Leopard.

I did notice under tools>options you can specify a location for temporary files. Not sure if this could have something to do with it?

Yeah I tested that too but no joy. God knows what its doing!

If we export to say a memory stick (although we don't allow usb access for students) then we can copy the wmv into the media drive no problem at all. Its just saving directly from WMM that we have the problem.

We are saving the movie file, by going to Finish Movie>Save to My Computer

Hi, We are currently using DSMeter on our Novell network to control which file types are allowed to be saved on which mapped drives. Currently DSMeter is setup to allow all media file types and block office file types to be saved to our media drive (M:) Likewise on users home folders (H:) they can only save office files and not media files. Each user has their own folder on the Media Drive (M:) that only they can write to. We have tested for mp3's, wav's etc from audacity and they save no problem. The issues comes with WMM. When we try and "save to my computer" and select the correct drive (M:) we get a message saving the file type is blocked yet wmv's are alllowed...... I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, seems that WMM is the problem here and not file type rules as other applications do not have this issue. Cheers

Your right, I had allow active content to run files on my computer enabled at my last school and for the 4 years I was there I can't say we had any issues related back to any malicious active content causing damage, like you say good AV and filtering should stop 95% of most things. I'll see what the boss thinks!

Gave it a go following the microsoft kb but the my computer zone doesn't want to appear. We are using IE7 and Microsoft don't mention you can do it on this version? Could be wrong though......

We use Text Message Server integrated into SIMS/Bromcom Electronic Register works really well although I'm not sure what you can do Integris boy Theres only so much you can do. I know someone said check the website or listen to the radio/watch tv but there is always going to be one parent who says they don't have a mobile phone/radio/television or access to a computer!

Hi, Wondering if anyone might be able to offer some much needed advise on this one. Our Year 10 students are doing a web design project using Serif WebPlus X2. Part of their project is to include active content on their web sites like marquees/rollovers etc. On our student Internet Explorer policy we have the option to "Allow active content to run files on my computer" unchecked. Whenever they preview their websites or go to any sites that have active content, the active content does not load nor do they get a prompt giving them the option to allow. We have this all disabled due to security. I know the option to "Allow active content to run files on my computer" is a general setting but I was wondering is there anyway to have it disabled without prompt for Internet sites and enabled without prompt for local websites running from a local drive? Also if we were to allow it with prompts what security implications does this have? for example students don't have read/write permissions to the C drive so even if some dodgy active content was allowed through would it be able to do any damage? Hi All, I'm wondering if someone could offer me some much needed advise. I have just started work at a new college that is running Novell Netware 6.5. I for one have always "done" things the Windows way and its difficult to know where novell ends and where windows begins (if you know what I mean). Recently we have a few extremely common issues that I would normally just fix by logging in locally on the machine. On Novell I find that it makes use of the "Default User" folder in Windows a lot to which I have no idea how I can edit the settings in there. Some problems I'm having are: 1. Setting the default printer and having the setting store for all users that login to that machine. I know this is normally set by a policy but its only one particular user who is having the issue. 2. Setting the page size to A4 rather than letter. This is something that previously I would do by editing the normal.dot template, this doesn't work for some reason. 3. Changing the dictionary in Office to U.K instead of U.S. Again I know how to change it, just don't know how I can get the setting to stick for all users that login to a machine. Any help would be greatly appreciated. It might just be me being stupid but I have come from working on an RM CC3 network and Netware 6.5 is a whole new monster! Thanks. Adam.

My Bad, All sorted now. Am I right in saying this could only be achieved in Windows 2000 and the feature was removed in XP?

Hi, We are currently using Netware 6.5 and are encountering an annoying problem for our teaching staff. Students are currently setting background images on their home directories. Is there anyway we can disable this for all users? Thanks in advance. Adam.

I agree with webman. You need to allocate the packages: RM LST Common RM LST SAG Then on the machine you need to make sure that the RMC3IEngine service is running and is present (sometimes on our network the package installs but does not create the service) That should work then.

We had something similar here and it was the "setup" user account at fault. The account had become corrupt after being used on hundreds of rebuilds. Its a long shot and I'm not even sure if you use the "setup" account but it did have a lot to answer for when it came to our rebuilds not working.

On 18.5k here, same as my colleague. We are both senior network technicians that have a responsibility to manage and maintain the entire school network of 11 servers, 350 desktops, 300 laptops. The school claims that they have never had a "network manager" as such but yet we are expected to do a network managers job.

If this is true how on earth are schools that don't have the qualifying OS criteria supposed to install windows XP pro on their stations? For example a new school is built and they want to license 300 machines that currently have come shipped with no OS, they have no previous licenses or agreements in place yet they wish to setup a schools agreement. Under the schools agreement they are sold part number 66J-01156 qty: 300 What your telling me is the school would be breaking the law?

This is causing some confusion for us also. I recently renewed our schools 3 agreement and requested 300 XP licenses to cover all of our machines for XP installation. They sold me part number 66J-01156 which is labelled as Vista business upgrade. I am now being told that I can only use those licenses to upgrade machines that have come pre-installed with XP Pro to Vista business and that I cannot use those licenses for fresh installations of XP even though with the acceptance email from Microsoft they provided me with a new Windows XP Pro key!! Anyone got any ideas on this as its a really grey area. Now I'm assuming that as Microsoft are not selling XP pro directly anymore they sell you Vista business upgrade with keys for XP pro and Vista business which means I am Ok to install XP directly onto a blank machine that did not come with XP pre-installed using the key they gave me right?? :eek::eek::eek::

We had exactly this problem with leopard 10.5, 10.5.1, 10.5.2 It wasn't until 10.5.3 that it actually worked. Since 10.5.3 the machines have not been modified in anyway but its likely that releases after 10.5.3 apple have broke AD integration again.... Have you tried 10.5.3?

The networks are completely separate right now and we would like to keep it that way with the exception of web traffic should be allowed to cross into the other network to use the gateway. So machines on the 192.168.3.0 network need to access the router which is on the 10.15.87.0 network. Both networks are on a different domain. Can this be done? Thanks.

Hi, We are currently looking into allowing our admin network to use the curriculum internet connection. We do not wish for the two networks to communicate information with each other but we would like it so any web requests sent from our admin network are received and processed by our curriculum router. Can this be done by using a trust relationship in Server 2003 or do we require a router to sit between the two networks to deal with this request. Both networks are on a different subnet. Admin uses 192.168.3.0 255.255.255.0 Curriculum uses 10.15.86.0-10.15.87.253 255.255.254.0 Thanks in advance. Adam.
