Can you try ftp Passive mode - sometimes called 'firewall friendly' ? Have seen similar issues in the past, due to the way ftp works with both a command and a data port. Sometimes the network connection can be killed as there's no traffic on the command port whilst a data transfer is going. The hash command can also be useful, by creating extra data on the command port. -
+1 for the PIRs. This is a fairly standard method in large data centres, lights come on and follow you around - spooky at first, but really simple & efficient in operation

Is the 'remote registry' service running on the clients ? I had to set this to automatic via GPP, control panel, services for Sophos to install.

Also, check you've got a sensible, working printer set as your default - it can go a bit la-la otherwise, guess it's trying to work out page size etc.

Ditto - has a stone 2 weeks ago where the onboard NIC was just going crazy. Disabled and stuck a low-profile card in, now fine.

This gives you an IP--MAC listing netsh dhcp server \\SERVER-NAME scope XX.XX.XX.XX show reservedip and netsh can do loads of stuff, just not too friendly about it

Can be awkward to get at depending on the laptop, but it has occasionally brought machines back to life for me !

Sounds like proxy, you probably won't have one set as administrator - use group policy modelling to check what settings a specifuc user/machine get, it'll show you where they're coming from as well.

look for 'GPMC sample scripts', downloadable from microsoft - one of them will do what you need ...
