Hi, I'd ask your help desk about this ... the lgfl voip system has a tannoy built into it but I think needs a local router but certainly works with the 3905 handsets you have

I guess part of the problem they have with web filtering is because they have an un-contended network the log files are massive hence it takes time. On the occasions where I have had issues of esafety I call there help desk, explain what I’m after and they run log reporting for me there and then. I’m told the new filter system they talk about in the flyer that came with the offer address this and also ssl filtering. ‘Value for money’ is different to ‘as cheap as possible’

Even against a basic service the lgfl solution stacks up well, if you just price the desktop av, the email virus and spam filter and the ability to recover mail from the mail system, which google will not do, I still think the lgfl package comes out on top. This with the fact they are deploying an email archive system and taking the pupil email systems out of the hands of microsoft and building a pupil platform with a pile of stuff to combat radicalisation in line with government advice I think kinda makes it a bargain and that’s before we go near content (of course you have to use it for it to be worth anything) google and Microsoft are great at providing the service they have but my experience of their support is not that good at all and if you ask for something they don’t do, like recover a deleted mailbox, then it all falls apart.

I think this is an across the board activity for LGfL, all the schools I work in have received letters except for one and I got them to call the LGfL office on 02084084455 to get there letter if your not connected already (that was the start of this post) then calling the sales people at atomwide does the job if your after a full list of all the features and twiddely bit’s that the service offers, the virgin sales people aren’t upto speed on all the bit’s that come with the service.

Would second most of that, Psidii. Web filtering, and internet speed gives us everything we want in those areas, and are very reliable. Have used USO for our accounts in school for years – not too bad to set up, and once going, not much to do so long as SIMS is up to date. Their tech support can be quite strict re firewalls, but the rest is fine. Having said that the uptime on the network is really very good certainly by comparison to the syntix run LGFL 1 service Lots of other services too, although we don't use all of them. Email and filtering is good, and we use the free Mydrive as our school portal. Remote access and support hasn't been a problem so far, but then we use quite a few of the category 2 sites too. Support site is complicated, but it does the job everything is there, and we do like the call logging. Guys on the phone are helpful, but they don't make changes without a case! Sometimes we find the solution to a problem isn't the one we'd have expected, but we always seem to get what we need. Training was quite useful, seems ages ago now! Value for money? Seems good to us, especially with all the extras thrown in, and I'm told its about to get better still.

I believe you have several problems here starting with going https as you log onto google which immediately bypasses filtering UNLESS your un-packing the ssl data like a smoothwall firewall. Other things you can do is fix your dns so that you never go to their https engines and so your filtering will work. Atomwide Managed Services — HTTPS searching with Google Atomwide has a product that strips apart https and will allow you to filter everything but then you need to work out how your head log's into his or her bank web site because I bet they don't want you decrypting their data !! Don't rely upon Google to always enforce your desired config in terms of safesearch and NoSSLsearch. In short no filter system is impossible to bypass.

That sounds like a filtering issue ..... "Error Loading Page - SSL Connect Error" are you sure the ip address of the license server has been allowed in your WebScreenII filter setup ?

Lgfl have a terminal server remote gateway systems in the core of their network which all schools can use and that gets pointed at the local TS box which sounds like what you need – if you built a TS gateway then it packages it all up over ssl much the same way as a sonicwall would or for that matter a cisco firewall

I used to help out in a school that used Ranger in LGfL but they ended up running with just the LGfL filter but I think that was because they were not making use of all the features. I bet is covered under a remote access product so the school’s head will need to sign up for category 2 filter to make it all work – always sign up for one the lgfl training course which are free – there’s one on the filter system – have a look on their support site

I'm not sure that telling anybody to 'die in a ditch' is a helpful comment here and your use of it does you no credit. The managed service provider be that LGfL, Atomwide, BT, Virgin Media, NetSweeper or the UK Government cannot be held responsible for the content of the Internet. If a web site on the Internet pro-actively try's to make safe searching difficult or impossible to enforce then that’s good cause to block the whole site as it demonstrates the sites moral position and one has to wonder what other tricks they are up to. Google at least try and help with the dns methods that they publish and service providers should make these available to end users which LGfL do.

I had loads of grief with excite and ended up talking to them direct and they just did not want to help resolve safe searching which sounds like you problem - why don't you just block excite and be done with it ? simple solution really

Have a look here Root name server - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia If you want to avoid the lgfl dns servers then just build yourself a local dns server and it will start off by looking for root dns servers by default and the lgfl network will let you do this. As a side point ... Why on earth do you want to run this over head - the lgfl changes simply ensure that google can't slip into https and so this means safe search can be enforced and you have a better level of control over filtering.

I believe there are changes a foot in this area to tighten up the LGfL filtering system - ironically as a result I was told of other posts on this site The key bit to consider looks like this page on the support site manual https://support.atomwide.com/secure/guide/WebGuide/Help.html?https_filtering.html They appear to have produced a restriction on 'allowing' keywords but left the block alone so your ebay will be fine. yep - I'd raised a case and Virgin sorted the server .....

On lgfl you just need to be careful what you choose email provider wise - if it does https then it's fine if it's gmail or something like that then ask for the product by name in a support case rather than trying to pick ports the lgfl guys know which ports to open up biggest problem here is actually about locking down the devices in the first place.

This will be catagory 2 filter policy which is the scary remote access stuff thats allowed in LGfL land with your head agreeing and OTP tags deployed in the school. They deliver the tags real quick and once setup gets you access to a pile of products including this one and teamviewer to name but 2. Tags also work with remote access so they are worth the effort.

I understand that everybody is now off LGfL 1 and migrated to LGfL 2.0

you can ask the help desk to allow access to the google ranges and that will sort this out for you as well, just need to ask in a support case ....

tripped over this as well - I think it's a interaction between the fact that Virgin run the core of LGfL and also their own web sites. I've raised it as a support case with Atomwide and I suspect that will sort it once it gets to Virgin ...

Is it just me or is the Buckinghamshire LA migration to a new service provider not looking very education friendley ?? End of last week the entire network stopped allowing web access to the internet and knowbody appeared to know what was going on at all ....

So this will be the normal fun of google changing the way they enable safe search which now appears to be something that you can enable and ‘set’ if you sign into google with your google account ! and then it does work. Chrome looks like it’s talking with the google search engine in a more intimate way than other browsers so we are basically down to Google wanting to keep control over everything rather than any filter product. One thing I did trip over was Kid SafeSearch UK. Google for kids in the UK with safe search. however if you go here and search on tits the first thing you get is an add at the top which isn’t blocked and is defiantly NOT child friendly – basically Google don’t want to be blocked ….. unless you log in to their system and then choose to turn safe search on …. Very useful ….. (NOT!!) especially if your a 13 year old boy in a secondary school you can enable and disable safe search at will ....
