We have archive set to 14 months for everyone. Standard staff have another 14 months before it is deleted. SLT and key staff have 4 years in Archive. If it is something that is wanted longer than that then it has to be taken out of email and stored in an actual file system. Email is not a file system. Depends on what it is as to where it goes. Personal reference should go into OneDrive, information for Department goes into departmental SharePoint, pupil information should be logged against their MIS record, financial info should be logged against the appropriate finance system record, etc etc. We considered having a label to keep for longer or never deleting, but knew the usual suspects would just mark everything as that to try and keep everything. We made the conscious decision to push using proper filing systems.

I don't, is probably the overly honest and glib answer. We deal with far too wide a range of topics and technologies to stay on top. To keep roughly informed I just read around the subject. I keep an eye here, webinars that come up, LinkedIn, The Register and things like the MS 365 update bulletins. Try and surface research things as I come across them so if it is needed I have an understanding and can get more info to apply it. Beyond that it is normally more reactive, when something crops up I get up to speed as quick as I can.

How are people blocking software/apps in windows 11
TechMonkey replied to User3204's topic in Windows 11
I'd say blocking silently is an issue as the user, and then the tech, have no clue why an application is not working. Can't remember the number of times trying to make something work and then remembering to check AppLocker logs and find it was that, especially if it isn't the main app. Makes sense to have something that tells the user that this will not work and to not bother. -
Interesting comparisons to be had. Earliest item on MS is 1980, and there have been 184 things killed off. Google's earliest is 2001 and then have 297. Would be interesting to see some stats like the average age of killed off things or years per deaths. Have these been accelerating due to culture or staying steady?

Currently using a MagicCard but we are low volume, and I can't really recommend it. Odd way of installing, goes into power save mode very quickly and the only way to wake it up is to press buttons Used Evolis in a past life and had no problems but I can't remember the model.

Corporate Web filtering
TechMonkey replied to nicholab's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
What are the requirements? Number of users? Types of filtering? Is remote filtering a new thing or something they currently do? This question is important as HR may have to get involved or they may need to run it past legal as filtering, and monitoring, from off site is a big change in employment terms. I've not really dealt with many corporate filters but would probably recommend Fortinet by default. Gonna cost though! -
We got it as part of our Foxit license. Seems to work and not to arduous to use.

We went Ruckus as I have worked with their Wi-Fi before and seemed to make sense to go to a single place for Wi-Fi and networking. Various switches, some high powered, some stacked. Central management is good and gives great insights, great for tracking down ne'er-do-wells.

OneDrive/SharePoint drive mapper - which one?
TechMonkey replied to mdrabble's topic in Cloud Services
Yep, exactly as @NegativeKillDeath says. You can't mix shortcuts and syncs to the same area though. But as far as I know syncs were the outgoing methodology. I prefer shortcuts as they show up on any device, as they are part of your OneDrive, whereas the Syncs were device dependant. -
Cloudflare? I don't use them but I have heard good things and it sets you up to use their other tools on your domains.

I'd be careful jumping into IT Security/Pentesting/Auditing if you are chasing the money. From friends and other general chit chat it is reaching saturation. Jobs are getting harder to just walk into and companies are marketing aggressively to get business. If you enjoy it though go for it. It is something I have thought about going into, but I am less brave than you to massively change direction.

OneDrive/SharePoint drive mapper - which one?
TechMonkey replied to mdrabble's topic in Cloud Services
Same as Roberto and E_G_R2, trying to use modern methods. We don't use mapped drives, we train staff to use the Shortcut method as this is more universally accessible and works really well. Staff then pass this along to pupils. Works really well for staff that work on certain areas only as they can shortcut to that folder. -
Creating DHCP Scope - Scope Parameters are Incorrect
TechMonkey replied to newpersn's topic in Windows Server 2019
Do any of your current scopes overlap or are a subset of those new scopes? What subnet are you using? -

Pah, I just use coat hanger wire...

Can you expand on how this shows hacked accounts? My understanding is this will just show logins signing in from the US. Unless you have blocked countries abroad, a user could have a VPN or even just be misidentified. I don't know how the process works but A5 or A5 Security has automated investigation & response.

Unless someone with more knowledge can put me right, I'd say it was a bodge of a homemade cable. Looks like RCA to mini jack, but I have never seen them in series like that, always all the way to the mini jack, half each.

Laptop purchases - do you reject USB-C charging only devices
TechMonkey replied to Ditto's topic in Hardware
As others have said, actively the opposite to what you are asking, embracing USB-C and running with it. We are ensuring we have either very good extended warranties or even getting third Party accidental damage for the devices. Makes the device cost slightly more but saves money in the long run. This would cover broken USB-C ports. But, again, as others have said I've not seen many broken ports. -
Wireless screen mirroring vs Touchboard
TechMonkey replied to Alis_Klar's topic in AV and Multimedia Related
We have tried to be as flexible as possible to accommodate as wide a range of teaching styles as possible. We have touch boards, with touch screen laptops. We have laptop mount arms at the side of each screen so teachers can mount their laptops and plug in if they want to work at the board. They also are taught how to cast to the board so they can teach from the back of the room or while roaming. Interestingly touch works with this as well and feeds back to the laptop, though not as well as hoped. I think it works and have had good feedback -
One of England's largest school academies to go phone-free
TechMonkey replied to 6Foot2's topic in General Chat
But your solution is not a complex one, it is a dumbed down, oversimplistic, soundbite, one liner, headline of a solution. No, it will not magically go away or be wished away by hand waving with solutions like teach kids not to get addicted to things. It definitely won't be solved by pointless trolling or snarky remarks that seem to show a surprising lack of understanding of the educational setting for an EduTech. -
One of England's largest school academies to go phone-free
TechMonkey replied to 6Foot2's topic in General Chat
You mean like alcohol, drugs, gambling, spending? There are lessons in those things and yet it still happens. I agree that education is the way but what do you move or drop to cover this? When you have companies with more money than some countries developing systems to be as addictive as possible how do you counter that? The issue is not simple so simplistic 'solutions' don't work. -
Helpdesk recommendations to replace Jira Service Management?
TechMonkey replied to Shaun_Dark_Lord's topic in Cloud Services
HALO ITSM seems to be very well regarded and (in my opinion) a verry good company. Looking to move but inertia is a terrible thing. One price and you get everything. Currently with Freshservice, which isn't bad. Has done well for us but they are constantly changing their prices and subscription model and everything seems to be coming an additional extra, which they push heavily. Both do a lot more than just service desk though, we use them for workflows, HR, Estates, looking to finance requests as well. Trying to use the assets part of Freshservice but that was an additional cost above 100 items and has its quirks. -
Not noticed anything so far. What is the IP Microsoft is seeing? That would be more my concern as it could affect a lot of things. Also, why has it changed?

Make it clear to the provider that you want to keep the contract with a new number but want to transfer out the number only, not stop the contract. I have done this in the past. May be provider dependent though.
