I'm creating a report for the office and one thing they want is some data from multiple years. I can do that easily as seperate queries but I wondered if there is a more efficient way. So does anyone know if there is a way to bring data into SRSS and then filter columns of a table or matrix by a variable? The columns would be current academic year (which I have as a Parameter), Academic year +1, +2, +3. Ta.

Our approach is to ignore cameras and get the Teacher to share their screen to show the remote pupil what they are doing on the board. To get over sound issues we have purchased some bluetooth lapel mics. Dongle goes into the mic socket on the PC, the other end goes on the teachers belt and the mic on the lapel. They are not perfect but they mean the teacher can be anywhere in the room and still be picked up. We are not kitting out ever room with these, just have some in reserve to be booked out. Not used in anger yet so the plan may be the first casualty of action!

Mobotix have a solution that has an app. Not cheap though. About £1200 ex VAT for the hardware then installation needed. I don't know if it needs a server running or if it goes direct to the app. The app can then talk to them or open the door (if linked to the door opener)

The only other option is that the export routine only supports XLS which I have spotted from some systems. This is normally down to they either haven't updated their export module to include XLSX or the developer hasn't looked at it yet so sticks with XLS because that will be fine.

I'm not defending the app, I held out installing it until I had a chance to review and look at the facts. I'm pointing out the flaws in your argument to not have it. No personal information is held, the person you have issue with is not involved in the app, the dubious back-end is a completely different system, the dodgy data manipulation is a different system. Just to be clear. Test and Trace, who Dido Harding is in charge of and who 'lost' results and who have been using XLS sheets and who had the fiasco is NOTHING to do with NHSx or the App. You are conflating two very different departments, systems and entities. That is where the issue is. People are trying to point this out to you and you are digitally stamping your foot and digging in. You do you, but do it ofr the right reasons, not because you haven't got the correct facts or are misinformed.

Good for you. Could I ask what other apps you have on your phone? I mean just having a phone is a tracking device, so a breach at your mobile provider would compromise you. Considering all the good work NHSx has actually put in after the failure earlier in the year, reassurances, and mitigations this just seems like a stubborn stance because you don't like the head of a different department. Even if there was a breach what are you expecting someone to find out? That 98762348634928459823 bumped into 09863498690869. It won't even tell them where those IDs met, just that they were close for 15 minutes. The civil service is actually pretty good at network security, all the data breaches since 1961 have been memory sticks, stolen devices or mislaid information, not hacks. But feel free to stick with the tin foil hat.

Can I ask what you are worried about though? The track and trace app is different than the testing interface. Or is it just a general protest about her having the job?

Are you not able to give them a run down? What equipment you have, how old it is, life span, what services you provide, what you think you should be providing?

I'll try and dig out the URLs I added to our Bypass Auth list. That caused some problems for one teacher but otherwise worked fine. global.vss.twilio.com was definitely one.

Same as FishCustard. School policy is to use tools we have and integrate with other tools. So we use Teams as it integrates with M365, azure AD, OneNote and we have it so nothing new needed.

We disabled fast-switching as we found PCs with 10+ profiles all running and people wondering why the machines were running a touch slow. We now actively tell people to restart PCs if abandoned, if the member of staff loses anything it is their own fault. Lock screen is for nipping to the loo or getting prints, not going to teach a class and coming back to your special machine. Everything runs a lot smoother. The only complaint we had was last week when someone asked where it went. This was after 7 years of being turned off.

Except the Internet isn't static these days. You could visit a page and get a very different view than I get. Add to that HTTPS interception issues. I'm not condoning or endorsing, but saying you just need a link to see what they were looking at is incorrect.

Problem is, "venue" is a catch all term. The venue I was trying to check into is a Climbing wall. I can social distance there, and it is pretty solitary halfway up the wall! Venue does conjure up images of packed gigs and concerts, but they are using it in a very loose term.

People get turned away for not having the right footwear and many other mundane reasons. If that is the establishment rules that is the rules, nothing new or escalatory there. People will vote with their feet. All I can find is a push to have contact tracing on by default, but you would still have the option to turn it off. As far as I am aware the contact tracing framework is baked in, the app is just instigating it. Again, if you don't like it, turn bluetooth off and uninstall the app. But they would have to prove you were conspiring with them. Imagine there was a 6 person EduMeet and they happened to sit on the table next to the local Mafia chapter. Unless they had footage of the EduMeet interacting substantially with the Mafia then all the app would tell you was that they were within 2 meters for more than 15 minutes. If they had footage then the tracking app data is trumped anyway.

I have had some new drives sent out and they are Seagate. Can't tell you what the current ones are as I failed over to my old hardware and turned the new one off. From the other thread I'd say tell them you want the drives changed full stop. Though I would wait until Half Term!

But what is the Genie here? Once it has all died down, we uninstall the app. If they try and make it law to have the app then that is what we oppose. I can't see this being any use a tracking method as if they say I was with such and such a person so accused of something, any lawyer should be able to kill that while asleep as it can't determine if you were with that person or just in the same room, which are very different prospects.

I decided to go for it in the end. Only issue so far is I tried to QR code into a venue and it didn't register. That could have been as it was stuck to the door so there was some glare, but I gave up in the end.

Yep. We had a PC stolen, literally someone came in late, picked it up off the desk and walked out with it unchallenged. Found in a field and returned.

Not sure if SelectaDNA is the same but SmartWater has a shelf life, 2 years, so if you get too much and don't use a bottle in time it may time out. I know we had a massive bottle that we used for the full two years and did loads of items. Can't tell from their website if they still do the big bottles as it only shows small bottles.

Smart Water is good, as long as the Police are still checking for it. Otherwise we use an engraving machine and just write the school postcode, once in large and one somewhere discreet.

Flashbacks to some of the phrases or search terms that were thrown up in a past life and they were always English lessons. Context is hard, and trying to cover all phrases that raises red flags to us is even tricker. But I do agree, with the number of mundane results like word lists from English sites we get flagged, knife alone would be good to flag.

Not sure it is a case of a better way, it is what works for you and your school. Using Teams is a very distributed and democratic(?) way of doing it, departments looking after themselves and acting like black boxes a little bit, providing information on schedule or as requested. It is very much the new way of IT and information. If your department heads and SLT are fine with that, it will work. Where it may fall over is if management want to keep tight control or oversight, if it isn't organised well or if there are aren't clear lines of who needs access to what. So a secondary school where there are clear departments works well, with the few stragglers who may change what they teach from year to year maybe causing a bit of an issue at the start of the academic years. It will also annoy those that are used to looking at everything, clear communication lines are needed, so SEN may have issues if they rely on diving into department folders to find minutes or read up on work. It may have to be some staff are added to everything. That isn't ideal as you end up with the classic case you get with distribution lists, of people being added to many just to be informed and then no one knows who is getting what information and some being overwhelmed with more information than they need. Just using SharePoint is the more traditional method like mapped drives. IT sets up a library, documents go in and people dive in to get what they need. I know you can make SharePoint more distributed with groups and group sites, but I would say most don't use that. Neither is wrong, it is what fits the management style and culture of the school.
