  1. Hmmm. Its a thought. Although it would mean altering the way home folders are set up completely. Currently they are created the first time a user logs on to the domain via GPOs (Redirection of My Documents) and then the home folder for that user is just a mapped drive to the same place (useful to have a UNC version and a drive letter version of their folder - some software just works better one way or the other).
  2. Does anyone know of a realtively simple way for Moodle users to be able to access their Home Directories through Moodle when it is set up on a WAMP box (Windows 2003, Apache, MySQL, PHP). I know it can be done an a LAMP box, but as I have no linux experience (and my attempts at setting Moodle on a LAMP box failed miserably) then we'd like to use what we already have. Thanks in advance Adrian
  3. Try MusgraveDesign. They did an extensive Joomla based site for our School (which if you look at our website you'll see isn't a standard run of the mill School!) - the great thing is they made it so it doesn't automatically scream out Joomla like so many other Joomla based websites around. Our website is Chetham's School of Music
  4. Hmmm Looks like CertMgr.exe isn't part of a standard Windows install but should be part of .Net Framework. We have all the .Net Frameworks installed but no sign of CertMgr.exe.
  5. Nearly there, but the script can't find certmgr.exe on our PCs (and neither can I!) There is certmgr.msc but running the script like this CertMgr.Exe -add \\*ourserver*\designscience.cer -c -s -r localMachine TrustedPublisher just opens the console and doesn't add the certificate. Any thoughts?
  6. Has anyone figured out how to get all Macros enabled by default in Office 2007 via Group Policy (or preferably just the Macros for Mathtype 6.5) With Mathtype installed Word, Excel etc always have their Security bar pop up with Would you like to enable macros - no one notices, the popup goes away and then no-one can print because that is apparently a macro! Want to fix it via GPO but I seem to have tried every option in the Office 2007 .adm and cannot get it to just automatically enable macros.
  7. Hadn't thought about firewire, but I suppose that makes sense for a decent video camera. Would all cameras with firewire be seen in Windows as a 'webcam' if they were connected and powered on?
  8. Does anyone know of a decent little video camera that will plug into a PC/laptop via USB and act like a webcam when you do this. Reason for asking is that we are looking to stream one of our concerts through our website (via UStream) and it would be nice to be at least use a decent camera that an operater could pan, tilt, zoom as required rather than just a static low quality webcam. We will be micing the concert properly and pushing the mix in to the laptop, so would nice to have video that looked half decent as well, before the UStream app does its stuff and compresses it (instead of compressing video that already looks a bit naff!) Cheers Adrian Chetham's School of Music
  9. Sounds interesting and I may well look at that.
  10. Hi Guys Currently we have: 2* 2003 DC 1* 2003 DC with Exchange 2003 1* 2003 fileserver 1* 2003 with SQL 2005 + VMWare box with 2* 2008 (Print server + Kaspersky Central Admin) We are wanting to take a serious look at Windows 7 soon so I will need to upgrade at least one DC to 2008 or 2008R2 to have the correct GPO for Windows 7. First question is do I have to have 2008R2 for Windows 7 GPOs or does 2008 have the Windows 7 GPOs already in (or available to install through .admx files) I'm thinking that if we can get by with 2008 and not R2 for creating GPOs for Windows 7 then that is probably a better option for us at the moment. I need to migrate our Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007 on to new server and as it needs 64 bit, but doesn't run happily with 2008R2 yet then 2008 is the obvious choice there. (and it will get Exchange off of a DC!!! - I didn't do that, it was like that when I got here!) We also use Backup Exec 12.5 which currently doesn't support 2008R2. So really what I'm asking is 2008 R2 necessary if 2008 will/can look after Windows 7 boxes?
  11. We got the majority of our email flowing again yesterday after same strangeness had happened. However we have a number of outbound queues that just won't budge. E.g. the queue for emails sent to a yahoo.co.uk address. Messages in this queue that were stuck yesterday are still stuck. Some new messages arrive in to the queue and get stuck alongside them. Other messages arrive in the same queue, get stuck, but then go if i restart the SMTP service. Emails to most addresses seem to be moving fine, it is mainly hotmail, yahoo, and a few others that seem to be causing problems. This is the particularly strange bit.... I've tried deleting the stuck messages and they vanish from the queue. If I then restart SMTP service, they reappear!? - I thought they were supposed be deleted permanently if I deleted them from the queue.
  12. Sorted...... ...... Cisco routers NBAR policy had gone doolally and was randomly try to block SMTP stuff on Port 25. Rebooted it and emails are now going out once again.
  13. bump.... really need some help if anyone has suggestions.
  14. Hi Dos_Box Yes, we can resolve external IP and domains using ping and nslookup.
  15. Hi all got an issue with Exchange 2003 running on a Server 2003 box. Has been running fine. No changes to the system, but suddenly people started getting NDR reports from the postmaster service on the Exchange box. Looked in System manager and there are plenty of messages either queued or retrying but none seem to be going out. Have tried rebooting exchange twice. Have restarted all the Exchange services and the SMTP service to no avail. Emails are coming in to the system and being delivered to our users without issue and emails sent internally are fine, just sending to external addresses is borked. Had a few of the following type of errors in the Application Event Log: A non-delivery report with a status code of 5.4.0 was generated for recipient rfc822;[email protected] (Message-ID <[email protected]>). Causes: This message indicates a DNS problem or an IP address configuration problem Solution: Check the DNS using nslookup or dnsq. Verify the IP address is in IPv4 literal format. For more information, click http://www.microsoft.com/contentredirect.asp. and these appeared around the time that it stopped working we thing, but not had any of these errors since reboots, yet the problem still persists. Guessing it might be DNS based problem, but no changes have been made and there doesn't appear to be any other DNS issues across the network. Any help would be much appreciated as we are stumped!
  16. Thats fine if you are a headline act or famous chart singer.... If you are a 2nd violin in the Hallé then you won't be getting your name known across the world, you just want to be paid for your job.
  17. No .. I'm saying they don't actually get paid that much for their live performances which is why so many have to teach and do other work during the day in order to make enough for a living... hence why money from royalties is in important part of their income.

  19. Apache logs say 127.0.0.1 - - [24/Sep/2009:16:30:38 +0100] "GET /moodle/admin HTTP/1.1" 301 274 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-GB; rv:1.9.0.14) Gecko/2009090216 Ubunto/9.04 (jaunty) Firefox/3.0.14" Everytime I try to access any file through the browser I get pretty much the same thing just with a different timestamp and different filename if i try a different file. The only error I get in the error log is [Thu Sep 24 16:30:41 2009] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] File does not exist: /var/www/favicon.ico With just a different timestamp each time I try to access moodle.
  20. I'll pop my oar in the debate about file-sharing (not Lily Allen) as a former professional musician and now someone who works and teaches at a specialist music school. Whilst I understand the argument that CDs/Downloads can be seen just as promotional material to get people to go and see the artists live (which is I believe FACs point of view) that only works for the large established bands and not for groups trying to break into the business - they still need to earn a living. The problem with FAC is that are trying to push their beliefs out to all CD/Downloads.... the problem is they only see it from the point of view of pop/rock/chart music. What about the guys who slug it out every day, the jazz guys performing gigs in small venues, the orchestral players who are rehearsing during the day, performing at night and in the run of things make a small wage (most orchestral players - even the principal players - teach in their spare time to make a wage that is equal to the skill and talent they possess). What about the composer, he deserves a cut of the money - That would be like saying 'insert famous modern authors name' should only get paid for selling one book as the other 2 million copies will just be copied illegally and given away. What about the sound engineers and producers who give the artist the sound they are after (ever heard some of your favourite bands live and found them to be a disapointment and not as good as the recording - thats probably because the engineer and producer have spent a hell of a lot of time recording, re-recording, mixing etc to get them to sound perfect). There is the cost of the production of the CD - the guy who designs the cover booklet needs paying... the costs go on. People file-sharing their CDs for nothing is depriving the small guys (or real musicians as I prefer to call them) of a small but important income. And for those who say well, I downloaded it but didn't buy it because I wouldn't have listened to it normally anyway.... well if you wouldn't listen to it normally, why listen to it because you're getting it for free?! Rant Over.... but it does get my back up, especially when working in a school surrounded by some seriously talented musicians who, by the time they are professionals they may not get recording contracts because no-one is willing to pay to hear them on a CD... and that would be a real shame.
  21. Done the config steps in the readme except for commenting out the skip-network bit in the mysql file although I think it is now a bind to 127.0.0.1 comment not skip-network. Shouldn't make any difference if doing it trying to browse from the LAMP server anyway. I think it must be the php handler not registered. The only error in the logs are that it can't find a favicon.ico in var/www Browsing directly to a php file e.g localhost/moodle/index.php just gives a blank screen. How would I register the handler for php? Sorry if not making good sense as currently on train and can't remember exact things that server was showing!
  22. Have just tried browsing to one of the image files in the moodle folder and they appear in the browser fine (//localhost/moodle/theme/chameleon/pix/a/em1_bwgreater.gif). So I'm guessing it almost definately a PHP issue?
  23. Thanks powerdermonkey I've deleted the copy of the moodle folder i put into /var/www and run the code to link usr/share/moodle to /var/www/moodle as suggested I still get the same blank screen. Is it odd that I get a blank screen. If I try to browse to a file that isn't there e.g. //localhost/moodle/nothere.php I get Not Found error 'requested URL //localhost/moodle/nothere.php was not found on this server' but if i browse to a file in the moodle directory that should be there e.g. //localhost/moodle/index.php I just get a blank screen, but the index.html file in the www/var directory can be viewed properly. I'm wondering if PHP isn't doing its thing?
  24. Hi guys Currently run Moodle on a WAMP server and it works well, but there are a couple of modules (particularly the one the allows access to students home folders through Moodle) that we'd like to use that require Moodle to be running on a LAMP box. So thought I'd have a play with setting up a Moodle install on an Ubuntu vm. Got Ubuntu Server install (version 9. something), told it set up the system as a LAMP server when it asked. Told it that the webpages served by Apache should be seen by other PCs not just the localhost Installed Moodle using sudo apt-get install moodle and it appeared to install that fine. I can browse to //localhost/ on the Ubuntu server and see the IT WORKS! page and I can browse to the IP from other PCs and see the IT WORKS! page so Apache seems to be working. I can't however see anything other than a blank page when browsing to //localhost/moodle or //localhost/moodle/admin (don't get an error page 404 etc, just a blank page) I installed GNOME to have a look around the directory and found the Moodle files and been installed in USR/SHARE not VAR/WWW/MOODLE where I would have expected them so created a folder there, copied the moodle files to it and CHMOD 777 the VAR/WWW/MOODLE folder. Still nothing. As this is my first time with Linux I'm a bit stuck, and not sure what I've done wrong. PHP seems to be installed, don't know about MySQL, but it seems odd that I can't open //localhost/moodle/index.php at all from the browser. Can anyone with any experience of setting up Moodle on Ubuntu help please?
  25. There's nothing special with the code. Its just a standard webpage I built. Told GPO to use this webpage as the Active Desktop. Apply the GPO to the right PCs in Active Directory and it works. Originally set it up about 5 years ago. Has worked ever since no matter which version of IE (6,7 or 8). According to this article Release Notes for Internet Explorer 7 Active Desktop has been removed in Vista... doesn't say it wont work on XP in IE7... just Vista.
