HELP PLEASE! - random network issue with PCs going offline
TheFopp replied to TheFopp's topic in Wired Networks
I've run wireshark, and to be honest I'm not sure what I'm looking at, but the traffic looks fairly untoward - however I've only had my machine go offline once today and I didn't have wireshark running at the time... Had a look at the logs on the core switch through the cli and there is nothing of note in there. Will see what happens over the next couple of days as more people return. -
Hi there I'm hoping someone here might be able to help me work this out. We have a HP Procurve network with a 5406 at the core and a mixture of procurve edge switches. Last week PCs, at random, started going offline just for briefly (a couple of seconds), long enough for the PCs to lose contact with all the servers but then asking to be resynched so they could pickup their desktop items off the server again etc. Annoying at the best of times, but not great for those using software connected to the SQL box. It is happening randomly across the entire site. It's not a whole switch at a time - I've observed it happen on my PC without affecting my colleagues PC even though we're connected to the same switch, and vice versa. There doesn't appear to be a set interval of when it happens or anything. Nothing untoward, as far as I can tell, showing up on the switches (using the switches gui). We have two VLANS one for our VOIP system and one for data. Spanning Tree is enabled. Has anyone else had similar experiences or have any idea what could be causing it. We are struggling and as more people come back from their hols then we are going to see it more often just because more PCs will be in use. Please help!

HAP Installation issues - Application Pool Identity & Authentication
TheFopp replied to TheFopp's topic in Home Access Plus+
Hi Nick I presume .net4 is fine because it is running HAP+ V5.4.4 on the same box without a problem. Yes the HAP app pool is set to use .net 4 and integrated pipeline. Its Server 2008 32bit (not R2) The only lines in the web.config I can see that have svg in them are: are they what you mean? -
Hi Guys. Just trying to install the latest V8 of HAP alongside the version we currently use V5.4.4 (I know I'm year's behind!), and I'm having a few issues trying to sort it out. (a Server 2008 box running IIS7) Trying to follow the install video for V7 (presuming that it is basically the same as that for V8) and I'm a bit confused! Problem 1 I've unpacked the files in to a folder called hap in the wwwroot (V5.4.4 is in a folder called extranet). And I've created an Application Pool called HAP, using Net Framework 4 and Integrated Pipeline. I'm then supposed to right-click the HAP application pool choose advanced settings, and under Process Model change the Identity to be ApplicationPoolIdentity .... but the only choices I have are NetworkService, LocalService or LocalSystem. How do I get it to add ApplicationPoolIdentity? For the moment I've kept it as NetworkService as that is what my V5 install is set as. Problem 2 I've altered the Security settings on the items in the hap folder so that Domain Admins and SYSTEM have full access and I've managed to get the relevant access for the IIS AppPool/Hap user (by using the icacls command in the stickies). I then, in IIS, converted the hap site to an application (selecting the hap AppPool), however when I know click on the IIS Authentication I get an error as follows: " There was an error while performing this operation. Details: Filename: \\?\?C:\inetpub\wwwroot\hap\web.config Line number:248 Error: The configuration section 'standardEndpoints' cannot be read because it is a missing section declaration" If I click OK to get rid of the error, the status of all the authentication methods is stuck at Retrieving Status. Any help would be appreciated! Cheers Adrian (PS. ITs probably me just being thick... its quite a while since I did the original setup of V5 of HAP, but didn't really have any problems with it then.... I'm blaming it on me getting older and forgetting things!)

Thanks for your help, but got it sorted in the end and really should follow the advice I give to all out staff... ... I turned the core switch off an turned it on again... I think it just needed a reboot to apply the IP routing (which i did after giving each VLAN an ip)... All works as expected now!
-
Yes, each scope provides the ip of the relevant VLAN a the default gateway.

Hi there We're setting up 2 VLANs on our network. Data on VLAN 1 Voice on VLAN 2 Setting up our Procurve 5406 to act as the core switch. We've set VLAN 1 to be IP 10.0.4.1 255.0.0.0 for our data network and VLAN 2 to be IP 172.16.0.200 255.255.0.0 for our voice network. I've enabled IP routing on the 5406 and set a static default route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.0.1.254 to our Smoothwall for Internet connectivity. A PC on VLAN 1 (set with default gateway of 10.0.4.1) can connect to the switch by using either the 10.0.4.1 or the 172.16.0.200 address and can ping the Smoothwall on 10.0.1.254 and access the Internet. A PC on VLAN 2 (set with the default gateway of 172.16.0.200) can also see the switch on either address, ping the smoothwall on 10.0.1.254 and access the internet. So we can assume the static default route is working fine, but currently the PC on VLAN can't see anything on VLAN 2 other than the vLAN 2 port on the 5406 and the PC on VlAN 2 can't see anything on VLAN 1 other than the VLAN 1 port on the 5406 and the Smoothwall on 10.0.1.254. With IP Routing being turned I thought the 5406 would automatically route between the two VLANs. The current config on the 5406 is as follows: hostname "Server Room*L4 5406-1" module 1 type J9534A module 2 type J9535A module 3 type J9537A module 4 type J9537A ip*routing vlan*1 ** name "DEFAULT_VLAN" ** untagged*A2-A24,B1-B24,C1-C24,D1-D24 ***ip address 10.0.4.1 255.0.0.0 ** no untagged*A1 ** exit vlan*2 ** name "voice" ** untagged*A1 ***ip address 172.16.0.200 255.255.0.0 ** tagged*A2-A24,B1-B24,C1-C24,D1-D24 ** exit gvrp ip*route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.0.1.254 snmp-server community "public" unrestricted password manager And if I run a Show IP Route I get: * Destination******* Gateway*********VLAN Type***** Sub-Type** Metric**** Dist. * ------------------ --------------- ---- --------- ---------- ---------- ----- * 0.0.0.0/0********* 10.0.1.254***** 1*** static************** 1********* 1 * 10.0.0.0/8*********DEFAULT_VLAN*** 1*** connected*********** 1********* 0 * 127.0.0.0/8******* reject************** static************** 0********* 0 * 127.0.0.1/32*******lo0***************** connected*********** 1********* 0 * 172.16.0.0/16***** voice********** 2*** connected*********** 1********* 0 What I have I missed to get the 2 VLANs talking to each other? Thanks Adrian

I'm sorting out the Head with a notebook that she can use when out of School. All going well, but one issue I'd like to resolve if possible. We run Exchange 2010 and on her school PC the head uses Outlook 2007 to get her emails. Would like her to be able to use Outlook 2007 on the new notebook when not on the School network (she could use OWA but I know she prefers using Outlook), however I can't get Outlook to talk to the Exchange server when its not on the School network. Seems strange when its so easy to setup up a mobile phone to get emails/contacts/calendars from Exchange/OWA that I'm struggling to get Outlook to do it. I've tried creating her Outlook account using the Exchange option, with the HTTP option... everything basically (we don't have imap/pop/smtp enabled on Exchange as everything else seems happy to do without it). It just refuses to talk to the Exchange box/OWA. Has anyone managed to do this successfully and if so how? Many thanks in advance Adrian

It must be a cookie thing. I was previously checking the student access to HAP whilst still being logged on to my PC as me. When I actually logged on to the PC as a student then went to HAP and entered a student username and password it worked fine.
-
Just spotted a slight issue. In the web.config file I've set it up so that only staff and musictutors see a particular drive. When a student logs on, if they are using Basic mode then they don't see this drive, but if they switch to the Enhanced view then they can see this drive. They can't access the folders or open the items that are on this drive as they don't have the permissions to do so, but I would rather they didn't see it at all. Can we set the silverlight version not to show particular drives like the basic version?
-
Ok, tried this and I can browse to the thumbnail fine in Chrome, its just not showing when using the silverlight browser in HAP
-
Hi Nick Got the layout sorted, thanks. And used the javascript for opening in a new window - perfect. Not sure where I'm looking for these images though (they work fine in other browsers). Tried browsing to /extranet/api/thumb/path.extension but couldn't see anything. The problem isn't a biggy. Most people here are using Firefox, IE or Safari. It just seems odd that Chrome doesn't show them.

Only just discovered HAP yesterday and I thought I had to post a message to say how brilliant it is. Got it up and running in about an hour yesterday, have integrated it with some other systems we wanted to provide access to from outside School and am just in the process of making it look more like our website. It'll be rolled out to staff and students next week! Couldn't get on the issue tracker at Codeplex so thought I'd post a request and bug here Nick: Is it possible on the homepage, when adding links, to be able to make them open in a new window? (I tried adding target="_blank" to but HAP really didn't like it) This would be useful so that we could link to a couple of our other WebApps and still have HAP open in its own window at the same time. Secondly, if using the silverlight version in Google Chrome, when browsing a directory of images, we aren't seeing any icon at all for the images (neither a standard image icon or a thumbnail of the image). The Biggy........ its great to drag and drop from the desktop to HAP, but will we ever be able to drag from HAP to the Desktop. This is in my mind the killer feature to really make it easy for students and staff to work. Thanks for all your hard work Nick... it really is a stunning piece of software. Cheers Adrian

Hi There Does anyone know of a decent camcorder that can also double as a webcam if plugged into a laptop/pc via USB. We are looking at possible streaming a concert or two from within School and the easist way to do this would be to get a decent camcorder (so the video quality isnt too rough) plug it into a laptop/PC via USB, wire up some proper mics into a mixing desk and then feed the output from that in the laptop/PC and then, with the camcorder showing up as a webcam in Windows just push it all up to UStream. I know I could just use a webcam, but I'd like the ability to be able to have vaguely decent visuals and be able to pan around/Zoom etc.

Accessing Home Directory via Moodle
TheFopp replied to TheFopp's topic in Virtual Learning Platforms
May have to go the LAMP route then.... I'm just useless with Linux though. Tried setting Moodle on Linux before and struggled with the basics. Couldn't get it to work at all. -
Hi Guys Has anybody found a way of setting up moodle so that students, once logged on can access their home directory. I know there is a module to do it if you are running Moodle on a LAMP, but we are running it on a WAMP box (Windows server, Apache, MySQL, PHP). You would think that if its running on Windows in a Windows Active Directory Domain there should be some way of doing it, but I've yet to figure one out.

Just installing 25 Ruckus FZ7363 APs and a ZD1000 as we speak.... what a joy it is to setup! Putting it in to our boarding houses for the kids to use. Authenticating against AD sorted. Its a thing of beauty!

All in 1 Filtering ISP Email
TheFopp replied to karldenton's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
We've been with Exa for a number of years. They now do Business rated ADSL2+ lines (we have three load-balanced together) if you think 4mb isn't quick enough. -
Perfect! Cheers Mark

Had some Ruckus gear delivered today (a ZD 1000 and a couple of 7942 APs) so that we could have a bit of a trial before looking at a purchase (Thanks to Mark at CPLTD). Got it set up within 15 minutes. Brilliant! Range is superb in the very small tests we've done so far. More tests next week. I do have one query though. Mark thinks that this can be done but has gone of to check so I thought I'd ask you guys who may have already done this. We've created 2 SSIDs. One called Staff and one called student. As we are a boarding school I'd like to be able to set the Ruckus gear to turn off the Student SSID between, for example, midnight and 6am so that they don't spend the night browsing and downloading stuff, but would like to keep the Staff SSID turned on - some of them keep strange hours!. Is this possible? Cheers Adrian

I'm trying to replace the Fuser Unit in one of our HP Laserjet p2055dn printers but struggling to find any manual or guide on how to do this. Has anybody done one before or know how to get the service manual?

Currently using Backup Exec 2010 to backup 700GB of data from our fileservers, SQL boxes and Exchange box. Full backup on to a HP DL360 with 12* 360GB SAS drives is taking just over 4 hours. Can't really fault it! @Edutech Does Symantec System Recovery integrate within Backup Exec 2010 or does it run as a seperate programme and have to duplicate any backingup?

Over the summer we've upgraded from Exchange 2003 running on Windows 2003 to Exchange 2010 running on 2008R2 on new hardware. All has gone pleasantly smoothly and on the whole very pleased with the updates. There are just two issues that I hope someone might be able to help sort out though. 1. We have 4 staff with Blackberry's. Previously they all happily picked up email from the exchange 2003 box without any hassle just by creating an Exchange email account directly on their Blackberry's. Now, though, we cannot get the Blackberry's to talk directly to Exchange 2010. Is there anything I should be doing that I'm not or do we have to go down the BESExpress route.... which just seems like hassle for simply picking up emails. I have got round it to an extent by creating a contact within AD for the users' personal email addresses, then setting up Exchange 2010 to forward all emails to their School address to their personal email. This is not ideal though, and we have also found that doing this can affect whether the user can see their attachments in Outlook (turn of the forwarding and the attachments show up fine). 2. Our Head has a Nokia E71.... a phone recommended to her by one of the school porters - not the IT team! This talks to Exchange 2010 fine, with the exception that all email attachments show up as 0Kb in size and if you try to open the attachment you get a message saying it has been deleted from the server - although it is still there in Outlook and OWA. Any suggestions on why these phones worked fine with Exchange 2003 but have issues with 2010, and any resolutions would be much appreciated. iPhones and Android phones seem to be working absolutely fine with 2010. Cheers Adrian
