Yes, it doesn't seem to be able to recover the db. You could try this, but it probably won't work either. (notice it has a -c in the recover command this time) sudo launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.openldap.slapd.plist sudo /usr/bin/db_recover -c -h /var/db/openldap/openldap-data sudo launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.openldap.slapd.plist Have you ever taken an archive of Open Directory? If you haven't and don't have a server backup to use as a restore you may have no choice but to change your OD server to standalone, restart and then promote to OD master. This will give you a blank OD, which you will need to setup again.

you are running the recovery tool (db_recover). You want slapd to be unloaded when you run the db_recover, it sounded like you loaded slapd first. However it seems like its not finding your database. Could you try running the three commands in the correct order again and take a screenshot of terminal when running those commands. Also go to Server Admin > Open Directory > Logs and give me a screenshot of the LDAP log.

try the other two commands, as it might be that slapd is not loaded.

Run these commands from terminal. sudo launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.openldap.slapd.plist sudo /usr/bin/db_recover -h /var/db/openldap/openldap-data sudo launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.openldap.slapd.plist

Looks like your Open Directory DB has corrupted. You need to unload slapd, run db_recover and then load slapd. If your unsure how to do this, or a bit worried of making it worse it might be worth getting an apple solutions expert or consultant, like me ;-) to fix it for you.

if you join the mac to the windows active directory domain and make her account a mobile account, it will sync all of her home folder from the windows server to the mac local HD, and then it will regularly sync back to the server as she works on the mac. It also means she can work on files in her home folder away from school and when she comes back in they will sync to the windows servers.

You want to go in to directory utility and make the account an mobile account. see screenshot below

Bit of a late reply, but hope it might help anyway. I have set this up once before as a demo for a university a few years ago. They wanted to test it before considering whether they would deploy it in every room. I'm not sure that they went ahead with it in the end. My opinion of it was that it gives the end user a poor experience of using a mac. Also, there is not an xserve anymore so instead you will have to run it on a mac pro that will take up a lot of space in your server room. Also time you buy this and a powerful mac pro, and have a fast enough network to cope with it all then it would be a similar cost to replacing some of your PCs with Macs and make then dual boot both Mac OS and Windows.

i don't have a great deal of experience with centrify, but it might be worth trying the Apple active directory plugin in directory utility. Least if that plugin works you can contact centrify support for a fix knowing it must be a problem with there plugin. If you get problems with the apple AD plugin then there must be a issue with how you have the home folders set on the AD server.

If you want to use AD but use a local home folder do this: Join the macs to AD, and when you join them go to directory utility>Services>Active Directory, Click Show advanced options and make sure you have force local home ticked, and use UNC path. Once joined and you then use an AD account from the login window it will create a home folder on the local hard disk of the mac but mount the users home folder (or closest shared folder to the home folder) as a share in the finder. To see it on the desktop you will need to go to finder > Preferences > General and have Connected servers ticked. I have seen Sibelius run directly from a network home folder, but i remember older versions use to be problematic, hence the recommendation above.

The best thing to do with it all would be to sell it all as parts. You will get a lot more money doing this. If you look for 750gb xserve raid hard drives on ebay, they regularly sell for £170 for a used drive!

They may not upgrade the edu spec iMac which would mean you could still run 10.6.8

probably worth starting your own thread. As long as they have the wireless settings in the admin account, it should have the wireless settings from the login window too.
